This World Bee Day (May 20), we’re celebrating the wildflowers that keep our pollinators—and our honey—thriving. BC is home to over 450 native bee species, and they’re counting on those “messy” patches in your yard.

The relationship between bee buzzing and flower response is a sophisticated biological interaction where both parties use specific sound frequencies to communicate and survive.

Flowers “Hear” and React to Bee Frequencies: Research has shown that flowers like the evening primrose can detect the specific, low-frequency sound of a bee’s wings (approx. 200–500 Hz). In response to these vibrations, they can increase the sugar concentration in their nectar by about 20% within just three minutes to attract the bee.
