Our pets know us in ways few others do. They are there for the moments everyone else sees and the parts of our lives shared only with them. Saying goodbye to such a constant, loving presence changes everything.

Pet loss grief reflects the relationship we shared, the life we built together, and the love that continues after they have passed. Other people’s recognition of that bond is never the measure of its significance.

At The Parted Paw, we recognize how much there is to grieve and how much there will always be to love. Whether your loss is recent or years have passed, there is room to speak about them, to miss them, and to honour the place they will always have in your life 🤍

After saying goodbye to a beloved pet, grief often fills our thoughts and affects how we experience the world around us.

Think of a photograph on your phone, zoomed in so closely that the image is difficult to recognize. As we begin to move from grief to grieving, we slowly zoom out, and the image begins to come back into shape. We begin to see the world around us again and connect with it in different ways.

This video explains how that metaphor reflects the shift from grief to grieving and mourning, as we learn to live with our loss and remain connected to the beloved pets we will continue to love always & forever 🤍

When a beloved pet passes, our love for them continues, as does our desire to share our lives with them. They remain in our thoughts, in our conversations, and in the moments we wish we were still experiencing together.

At The Parted Paw, we speak about continually learning how to move with grief. Part of that is finding ways to honour and cherish our pets, including them in the lives we are living now. Saying their name, sharing a story, or taking a moment to speak to them are ways of continuing a relationship that remains so deeply personal.

Whenever they come to heart and mind, we have a moment of connection. A moment to remember, to love, and to be with them, in a different way 🤍

Saying goodbye to a beloved pet is deeply personal, and each family brings their own wishes, concerns and emotions to the experience.

In part four of our conversation, Dr. Michelle Lam of Dr. Michelle Lam - Certified Hospice & Palliative Care Vet shares more about her in home end-of-life service and what saying goodbye at home looks like.

We learn how she tailors her approach to each pet and family, meeting pet parents where they are as they prepare for one of the most difficult moments of their lives.

Dr. Michelle’s work reflects the care and sensitivity involved in understanding what a family needs, alongside caring for the beloved pet at the centre of their goodbye 💙

Euthanasia is one of the most difficult decisions we may face as pet parents, yet many of us don’t know what the word actually means until we are being asked to consider it for someone we love.

Its Greek origins mean “a good death.” In the context of our pets, that meaning speaks to compassionate end-of-life care: relieving suffering and allowing their end of life to be as peaceful as possible.

Understanding this does not make saying goodbye any easier. It does not take away the grief or our wish for more time. But it can help us understand what we are choosing for them, and why 🤍

Dia de Los Mu***os invites us to pause, not in grief, but in gratitude for the lives that changed ours forever. It’s a day to honour love in its truest, most enduring form; the kind that remains after our beloved pets have crossed over.

It’s said that in this day, the veil between worlds softens. That the souls we miss most, including our beloved pets, find their way back to us.

Maybe it’s in the familiar warmth that fulls the room, the gentle nudge of a memory, of that unmistakable feeling that they’re near.

Whether we see them or not, their presence lingers, steady, moving, and unchanged. Today. We welcome them home in light, love, and spirit, and we thank them for loving us so completely while they were here and still after they’ve crossed over 🤍🌈🕊️

Tomorrow, October 27th, during the Mexican celebrations of Día de los Mu***os, families welcome the spirits of their beloved pets back home. It is a cherished day of remembrance and reunion, honouring pets who have parted and the love that continues to have such an important place in our lives.

Families prepare an ofrenda, an altar with photographs, favourite foods, water, and treasured belongings, to greet them. Each offering is chosen with their pet in mind, remembering what they enjoyed and all that was shared throughout their life together.

There is such beauty in a tradition that celebrates our pets year after year, recognizing their lasting place in our families’ hearts and homes 🤍

After a beloved pet has parted, their absence is felt throughout the day, often in ways a pet parent hadn’t anticipated.

Eating and sleeping feel different. Concentrating takes more effort. Being home brings reminders of how much life was shared together, from the first greeting in the morning to settling in for the night.

The Parted Paw refers to these early weeks as the “non-weeks,” when familiar routines feel unfamiliar and much of daily life is spent taking in what has happened. For some pet parents, there are tears. For others, there is numbness, disbelief, or a little of everything. No two experiences look exactly alike.

Recognizing these experiences as part of pet loss grief offers some understanding during a difficult time. When so much feels different, being met with patience, compassion, and care is especially important 🤍

In an episode of Nurse Jackie, a patient with cancer asks for help saying goodbye while those caring for him are trying to keep him alive. His request reflects something so difficult about caring for our pets at end of life: recognizing that they are struggling while wishing we had more time together.

Our pets cannot ask us for that help in words. We come to understand what they are experiencing through their comfort, their behaviour, and the changes we see in their daily lives. While this is happening we begin to face the heartbreaking responsibility of considering when continuing their life is also prolonging their suffering.

For pet parents, understanding why an end-of-life decision is needed does not take away the longing for another day together. We love them, we want them with us, and saying goodbye is painful even when we understand that their bodies are struggling.

This moment offers a way to consider what our pets might be communicating near the end of life, and what it means to help them when every part of us wishes they could stay 🤍
