On the surface, it might seem like shaving your dog's heavy coat for summer would be like putting them in shorts and a tank top, but for many breeds of dog, that double-coat is actually what's keeping them COOL!
Here are some good alternate grooming choices for double-coated dogs, to discuss with your groomer.
Contrary to what many people think, shaving a dog can actually make some dogs hotter...especially double-coated breeds. ☀️🐾
A dog’s coat helps regulate body temperature by insulating them from both heat and cold. When that coat is shaved too short, it can interfere with their natural cooling system and even increase the risk of overheating and sunburn.
For double-coated breeds like Huskies, Golden Retrievers, Shepherds, Bernese Mountain Dogs, and similar breeds, a proper deshed and undercoat removal is usually much safer and more beneficial than shaving. ✂️🛁
That said, some dogs do require shaving for medical reasons, severe matting, skin conditions, comfort, or quality of life - especially senior pets or heavily impacted coats. Every dog is different, and grooming should always be based on the individual pet’s needs, coat type, health, and comfort.
