I think we are safe washing all our winters and liners now. Spring sure came late this year. Dont leave your dirty winters wet, let them dry if you dont plan on getting them washed soon. Don’t use detergents like Tide or Gain, detergents strip off the manufacturers waterproofing plus they rinse out very poorly. Scented detergents and soaps create skin issues. Never use fabric softeners unless it’s a blanket or saddle pad rinse. Never wash in hot water because the heat shrinks plastic fibres , same goes with using a dryer to dry the blanket. To properly wash a blanket, remove any necks, unclip the tail strap if necessary, clip leg straps onto their d-rings, remove any fur and manure, safety pin holes shut, wash using horse blanket soap and don’t add extra soap , wash using warm water and hang the blanket to dry. Once dry, repair , waterproof if necessary and store away. I have seen many an improperly washed blanket that could have been used for a handful more winters become shrunk, unwaterproof with weakened fabrics from detergents. I hope this helps.
