�Hope Lives Here Animal Rescue Society (HLH) is a non-profit animal rescue founded in 2012. We are committed to rescuing stray, abandoned, and unwanted dogs and cats from Alberta urban and rural areas, including First Nations surrounding Edmonton and Red

Deer, to then place them in permanent homes. HLH created a spay/neuter initiative program within the communities we work with to help curb the overpopulation of unwanted dogs and cats. Our organization works with field volunteers in several rural communities across Alberta to rescue dogs and cats in need. Unfortunately, for every dog we save, there are at-least 10 more requiring immediate rescue, and in the case of cats, at least 30 more requiring rescue - without foster space we cannot rescue them. Hope Lives Here Animal Rescue Society received their Certificate of Incorporation on November 30, 2012 and became recognized as a Registered Charity. We do our best to keep our operating costs low, allowing us to assist more animals. Hope Lives Here Animal Rescue Society relies entirely on the generosity, skills, and compassion of a volunteer network in order to: �
Provide foster care, socialization, and basic training to prepare the foster animal for adoption
�Administer medical assistance to the foster animal
�Coordinate the adoption of the foster animal through a matching process of the animal’s needs to lifestyles and personalities of the adopters
Respond to calls for animals in need by traveling to urban and rural locations to perform rescues
�Provide food to field volunteers for the animals who cannot yet be rescued
�Prepare and delivery outreach programs and initiatives that promote responsible pet ownership
Raise funds to support HLH activities; and �
Build awareness about Hope Lives Here Animal Rescue Society and our cause. �

Hope Lives Here Animal Rescue Society does not operate out of a facility; instead, we rely on a network of foster homes who open their homes and hearts to rescued animals until a permanent home is found. Supplies such as leashes, collars, toys, dishes, food, litter, treats, and kennels are provided to our foster homes. A loving, safe and lifelong home is the goal in Hope Lives Here Animal Rescue Society's rehoming efforts; therefore, a multi-step adoption process is followed to ensure the best match possible between the needs of the animal and the lifestyle of the potential adopters. Many of HLH adoptable animals have been rescued from harsh situation; therefore, they are adopted out as companion animals to be loved and protected for the rest of their lives. The time we take in processing adoptions and careful vetting of each potential adoptive home is a core philosophy of our organization.

Our sweet Marvin has been in care for almost 2 years, and he is on one specific food that keeps him feeling his best:

Sadly, this is not a food we receive from pet store donation bins, so we have to buy it ourselves. With funds being very tight, we’re hoping our community can help with a few donated bags.

Marvin’s foster is located in Red Deer, and the food can be ordered through HLH PetSmart Wishlist and shipped directly to him.

Ramseys speaks a quiet language. In a world that often expects cats to be effortlessly adaptable, this 1-year-and-11-month-old grey and white tabby is a beautiful reminder that true connection is something to be earned.

When the room is still and he feels safe, Ramseys is pure magic. He is a brilliant, quirky soul who loves exploring the yard on a leash, happily crunches on bully sticks, and has a hilarious, deeply endearing habit of gently nibbling on your nails while he cuddles. His capacity for affection is massive—he truly craves human closeness. He just asks that you listen to him.

But because Ramseys requires people to read his body language and respect his boundaries, he is easily misunderstood. A sudden noise can shatter his peace; a high-energy play session requires quiet decompression afterward. He isn't a cat built for chaos, heavy activity, or the company of other pets. He absorbs the energy around him, which means he needs a sanctuary that is entirely predictable.

We are looking for a home that understands the value of patience. A calm, cat-savvy environment—ideally with female caregivers or gentle adults—where he can be the only pet and finally let his guard down.

Hope Lives Here will provide 100% of his veterinary CD food, medications, and supplies for a foster placement, but his ultimate destination is a safe place to call his own. Ramseys doesn’t need a big, busy life. He just needs one patient heart willing to slow down and learn his language.

The world forgets the quiet ones first.

Two years ago, during the bitter, freezing depths of early 2024, we rescued the “Feral 15” colony. Gusta was one of them. For 730 days, she has watched the world from the safety of Hope Lives Here. She watched her best friend get adopted last year. She has watched dozens of other cats tumble in and out of the rescue, scooped up into loving arms, while the families walked right past her quiet corner.

Gusta isn’t a performer. She isn’t going to run to the front of the kennel or demand your attention. In fact, since moving into the general cat population, she has backtracked a bit. She is a fiercely independent night owl who prefers to do her own thing. If you try to pet her, she might accept it—but entirely on a grudging basis. She isn’t a cuddler, and she isn’t trying to be.

Instead, Gusta’s love is a quiet, low-maintenance kind of presence. She is a professional lounger, a dedicated observer, and her absolute favorite hobby is finding a perfect, sunny window to watch the birds from.

Gusta will do well on her own or with a confident feline companion in her forever home to help her feel secure. She isn’t a fan of dogs, though she will tolerate them if they give her space.

It takes a very special, patient heart to look at a cat like Gusta and say, “You don’t have to change to be worthy of a home.” She doesn’t need to be a lap cat to deserve a soft bed and a safe future.

After two years of waiting, Gusta has earned a life of her own. She just needs one person to finally see her.
