Apparently, owning a grooming salon does not exempt you from having dogs who make questionable life choices. 🦨 Today, not one… but TWO of my own dogs decided to have a very up-close-and-personal encounter with a skunk.

At 8 p.m. on a Sunday evening, Prairie Paws opened its doors for a very exclusive, very unplanned after-hours emergency spa appointment for two clients who arrived wearing ✨ Eau de Skunk ✨.

The guilty parties: Cash & Duke.
Cash is unfortunately a repeat offender, so at this point he really has no excuse. Duke apparently just chose the wrong sibling to follow into battle. And then there’s Daisy, perfectly innocent, smelling lovely and sitting between them like the golden child she is.

Since Cash and Duke’s questionable choices have given us some experience in this department, a quick skunk PSA:

Don’t immediately wet them down. Skunk spray is oily, and water alone can spread the oils around and make the smell harder to remove. Instead, keep them outside if you can, put on some gloves and use a proper skunk-odour treatment r a fresh mixture of 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and a small amount of dish soap. Work it carefully into the affected coat, avoiding the eyes, nose and mouth, then rinse thoroughly. Mix it fresh, use it right away, and never store the mixture in a closed container. Peroxide can also lighten some coats or fabrics.

So much for a relaxing evening 🫠

As summer begins to wind down and September routines slowly start to creep back in, now might be the perfect time to check one more thing off the list, your pet’s next groom.

We have a little extra room in our schedule over the next week, making it a lovely opportunity to sneak in a fresh bath, tidy-up, full groom, de-shed or a little paw care before the busier fall routines begin.

If their coat is getting a little long, their nails are starting to click, or you’ve simply been thinking “I really need to book that…” consider this your gentle reminder.

Our quieter appointment days also mean a little more flexibility when choosing the time that works best for you, but we don’t expect those openings to stay around for long as fall approaches.

Our Manitoba Made Market is starting to come together, and we’re so excited to see this little space grow. 🤍

We created this market as a way to showcase and support talented Manitoba makers and small businesses, while bringing a thoughtfully created collection of locally made products into Prairie Paws.

Our goal is to fill these shelves with pet inspired pieces and handmade goods for pets that reflect the quality, care and craftsmanship that Prairie Paws is all about.

We still have a couple of spaces available for Manitoba makers who would like to join us! If you create something you think would be a beautiful fit for our space, we’d love to hear from you.

And for the wonderful vendors who have already reached out and confirmed their spot, please get in touch with us to arrange a time to come in and set up your display. We’re ready for you!

What is a Paw Pad Cleanup?

Our Paw Pad Cleanup is an individual service dedicated entirely to tidying and refreshing your pet’s paws. We carefully trim away those fluffy little “Grinch feet” on top of the paws, clean up excess hair between and around the paw pads, and finish with a nail trim for a clean, polished look.

It’s a simple service that helps keep the paws neat, comfortable and beautifully maintained without the need for a full grooming appointment.
