We did it! 10,000 surgeries and counting at the Spay/Neuter Clinic! 🐾

As of today, more than 10,000 dogs 🐶 and cats 🐱 have come through our clinic to be spayed or neutered. That's a whole lot of wagging tails and whiskers helping prevent pet overpopulation in our community.

Why it matters:
🐾 One female dog can have up to 80 puppies in her lifetime
🐾 One female cat can have up to 120 kittens

Spay and neuter surgeries help keep animals healthy, reduce unwanted litters, and support families and shelters alike.

Big love to our clinic team, the pet parents who've brought their animals in, and this community for always standing behind us.

Help us celebrate! 🎉
If your pet had their surgery at our clinic, post a photo in the comments and tell us their name. Let's fill this space with furry faces from the 10K club.

Here's to 10,000 more!

We’re sending a big thank you to for their generous $1,010 donation in support of the animals at PHS.

Here’s something a lot of folks don’t know — PHS doesn’t receive operational funding from any level of government.

That means every bowl of food, every vet visit, every clean blanket and cuddle is made possible by our community.

When a businesses step up like this, it helps us give animals the care they need and deserve. Donations like this keep tails wagging and make second chances possible.

Thank you, Link ClimateCare, for being part of this work with us!

A big thank you to the residents and staff of Sherbrooke Heights for welcoming us in and for the generous donation of goodies for our shelter pets. 🐱🐶

Our Community Paws program is all about taking a little “paws” in your day to connect with animals, share some smiles, and bring a bit of the shelter out into the community. 🐾

We love visiting workplaces and community groups to share what we do at PHS, introduce our animals, and show how people can get involved, support, or give back in their own way.

Thinking about organizing a donation drive or booking a visit? We’d love to hear from you!

Thank you again to Sherbrooke Heights for the warm welcome and amazing support!

🖤 Why do black cats get passed over? Let’s talk about it. 🐈‍⬛

It’s Friday the 13th, and while we’re not superstitious, we are all about helping black cats find loving homes.

Black cats tend to get overlooked in shelters — and not just because of old myths. Here are some of the real (and honestly kind of odd) reasons we hear:

🐾 “They’re hard to photograph.”
🐾 “They all look the same.”
🐾 “They remind me of Halloween.”
🐾 “I want a cat with more colour.”
🐾 “Aren’t they bad luck?”

Meanwhile, black cats are right here — being sweet, playful, affectionate, and totally ready to join your family.

They deserve to be seen for who they are: loving, loyal, and just as adoptable as any other cat.

Thinking about adopting? Check out the black cats on our website. Your new best friend might be waiting. 🐈‍⬛

🐾 Nuka is Chris’ beloved companion, but when her behaviour changed and she seemed unwell, he took her to an emergency vet and learned she had a life-threatening condition that needed a costly surgery. “Nuka is my best friend, and now when she needed me, my bank account wouldn’t allow me to help her. I was devastated,” said Chris.

After calling 20 veterinarians in the region, he found the clinic at Peterborough Humane Society. With support from a PetSmart Charities of Canada grant, they were able to help Nuka get the life-saving surgery she needed. “By saving Nuka’s life, they saved a huge part of me,” said Chris.

In 2023, PetSmart Charities of Canada made an $18 million commitment to help address barriers that prevent pet parents from accessing veterinary care for their pets. To better understand how pet parents are experiencing veterinary care, the team worked with Gallup to survey pet parents across Canada. The study revealed half of Canadians (50%) have skipped or declined veterinary care, largely due to financial considerations.
