Our last post about the spay/neuter and wellness clinic brought in some great questions, so we've gathered them here for anyone else wondering the same things.
1️⃣ What does a wellness exam include, and how much does it cost?
A wellness exam is $50. It's a full checkup with one of our veterinarians, similar to a checkup you'd receive from your own family doctor. During the exam, the vet listens to your pet's heart and breathing, takes their temperature, checks their ears, eyes, and mouth, and performs a nose-to-tail body check, including feeling for any lumps or anything unusual. This gives the vet a complete picture of your pet's health and helps catch small concerns before they become bigger ones.
At this time, when you book online, there are two types of appointments available. A wellness exam, where you can add services like vaccinations and microchipping, or a spay/neuter surgery, where those same services can also be added. A rabies vaccine is $25 and a microchip is $37.50. Core vaccines start at $13 for dogs and cats, and deworming or flea and tick prevention are priced by weight.
2️⃣ How much does a spay or neuter cost?
Pricing depends on the animal's size and species. A cat neuter is $140 and a cat spay is $275. For dogs, pricing is based on weight, starting at $360 for a neuter and $450 for a spay under 50 lbs, and increasing from there for larger dogs. 3️⃣ Do you offer dental services?
We're expanding our dental care offerings. Book a wellness exam first and our team can refer you from there.
4️⃣ Is this the same as having a family vet?
Not quite. We're not a primary care practice, so we're not set up to provide ongoing care with repeat visits over time. Our current focus is preventative care, including wellness exams, vaccines, and spay and neuter surgery. As our clinic grows, we look forward to expanding what we offer.
5️⃣ Why is it harder to book an appointment for a large dog?
Larger dogs require more space and time, so we can only take a limited number of large dog appointments each day. If we're fully booked, check back often or give the clinic a call. Spots do open up.
6️⃣ How does payment work?
Payment is due before your appointment. Once you're booked, our clinic team sends a PayPal link with your total. This helps us plan our days well so every pet on the schedule gets the time and care they need. If you have questions about your bill or would like to talk through your options, please call us. We're always happy to help.
7️⃣ What if I can't get through on the phone?
We understand that can be frustrating. As a busy clinic, we ask that you leave a voicemail rather than calling repeatedly. Every message receives a callback.
8️⃣ Is the clinic open year round?
Yes! Appointments at the PHS clinic can be booked anytime. We also run off-site rabies and microchip clinics throughout the year. Keep an eye on our page and events calendar for those.
Most services can be booked online. For any questions or special circumstances, please don't hesitate to get in touch.
9️⃣ Do I need to share proof of income?
No. Our clinic is open and accessible to everyone. We don't add extra hurdles or ask you to prove financial need to access our services.

Nope! We welcome pet families from anywhere.

The Peterborough Humane Society and the Peterborough Regional Spay/Neuter Clinic are located at 1999 Technology Drive. The clinic entrance is at the left side of the building.
