Some bonds stay with us forever. 🐾🦋

The 2026 Butterfly Release brought people together at ElderDogLand to remember beloved canine companions, honour their loss, and celebrate the love and connection that remain.

In this special reflection, Ardra Cole, Founder and Executive Director of ElderDog Canada, shares what makes the Butterfly Release so meaningful and why having a space where the loss of a beloved dog is understood matters so deeply.

This year, volunteers from the Peterborough Pawd joined volunteers from Kingston, Moncton and Fredericton at ElderDogLand, making our local community part of this special gathering.

For those who couldn’t attend, Ardra shared an important reminder:

“Your remembrances were honoured too.” ❤️

The Butterfly Release is sponsored by Friends of ElderDog, supporting commemorative activities that honour and remember the dogs who have touched our lives.

🐾 COURTESY POST | Meet Gemma & Chaos

Gemma (12) and Chaos (14) are gentle senior Cane Corso crosses looking for loving homes. This mother-daughter pair has lived together their whole lives and is described as affectionate, easygoing, and friendly with strangers and children. 🤍

🏡 Fully house-trained
💉 Rabies vaccinations up to date
🚗 Love car rides
🌿 A securely fenced yard would be ideal
🐾 Limited leash training

Chaos takes medication for arthritis and has some mobility challenges.

Keeping them together would be wonderful, but suitable separate homes will also be considered. Their greatest need is a safe, comfortable and loving home.

Meet Patti — this month's Volunteer Spotlight! 🐾

Patti was born and raised right here in Peterborough, and she's spent her years with ElderDog walking four different dogs, one relationship at a time. Since 2020, she's shown up week after week for the seniors and dogs who count on her.

Beyond her own volunteering, Patti has also brought several new volunteers into the Peterborough Pawd over the years — sharing how simple and rewarding it is, and helping our community of walkers grow.

Swipe through to hear, in her own words, what keeps her coming back.

Thank you, Patti, for the hours, the walks, the volunteers you've brought to our Pawd, and the light you bring to every doorstep. We are so grateful for you. 💛

Interested in becoming a volunteer like Patti? Link in bio, or reach out to [email protected].

Can't make it to Nova Scotia? You can still take part. 🦋

If you're in and around Peterborough like us, you don't need to travel to be part of it. Reserve a butterfly in memory of your dog, and one of ElderDog's volunteers will release it for you on the day. The ceremony will also be live-streamed on ElderDog Canada's page, so you can join in the moment from wherever you are.

Near or far, every name is remembered. 🐾

📍 In person: ElderDog Canada Memorial Gardens, NS | Aug 15 | 1pm gathering / 2pm service (Toronto time)

☀️ Summer adventures start with safe walks. 🐾

Warmer weather is a wonderful opportunity to spend time outdoors with our canine companions, but it’s also a good reminder that dogs can overheat more quickly than people.

Bringing fresh water, taking breaks in the shade, and choosing cooler times of the day for walks are simple ways to help keep dogs comfortable during the summer months.

At ElderDog Canada, we believe caring for dogs means caring for the people who love them. By taking a few extra precautions, we can help older adults and their beloved companions continue enjoying many more walks together.

💙 Do you have a favourite summer walking spot or a tip for keeping your dog cool? We’d love to hear it in the comments.

Some of our Pawd’s most meaningful moments happen in the small stuff — a walk around the block, a ride to the vet, a bag of food dropped at the door.

We’re looking for volunteers in Peterborough to help with dog care support. No experience needed, just a little time and a lot of heart. 🐾
