One of the most frequent questions I hear from folks is - what's the main difference between gaited and non-gaited horses.
There are many differences but for me, it was the reduced bouncing & movement due to a neck injury.
From there, discovering the different gaited breeds & finding the one best suited to our needs was quite a journey & what brought us to the Mangalarga Marchador

Raphael update:
What a ruggedly handsome, curious and obedient fellow he seems to be.
His hooves are almost trimmed perfectly from the pea gravel track he has to travel on between hay and water. That pea gravel is well worth the cost.
Raphael has an interesting left eye, with a square blue frame around his iris.... Kind of robot-like 🤔.
He's walking very awkwardly up and down the steep hills.... Just not used to them lol.
He's going to be a fun horse ❤️

Barron pics today. He is getting to be a nice size and is more than ready to show off under saddle.

Same hooves 6 months apart between photos.

You can see how the caudal part of the hoof has developed more tissue, resulting in opening the heels, and having more round shape to the hoof than oval.
What does that mean ? The digital cushion of this horse got stronger, and the shock absorption of this horse is better over all.
When the horses have a well developed digital cushion, we prevent the shock to travel further up the leg to structures that are not meant to do so.

Horse is working well on all terrains.

Flying Oaks Rufino. Not a fan of having his long lost son move in. Vinny is curious, Barron is jealous and Rufino is annoyed. Hope they work out out sooner than later.
Raphael's crushed velvet coat is super soft and plush.
