Please watch for farm vehicles on our roadways, keep our farmers safe!
Sharing the Road with Farm Equipment – Know the Law!
As harvest season continues, you may encounter slow-moving farm machinery on our roads and highways. In Ontario, farmers have the right to operate farm machinery on public roads and highways (except certain controlled-access highways) to travel between fields, farms, or storage.
What drivers need to know and tips for safe sharing:
• Watch for Slow Moving Vehicle (SMV) signs (orange triangle).
• Farm equipment is allowed on most roads — they are considered legal vehicles under the Highway Traffic Act.
• They often travel much slower than normal traffic. Be patient — passing unsafely is dangerous and illegal.
• Leave extra space — large machinery may need more room to maneuver.
Remember: These vehicles are essential to our food supply, and operators have the same rights to use the road as any other motorist. Respecting farm equipment keeps everyone safe — and it’s the law. ^mt
