Never leave your pet alone in the car. And always look before you lock!

Even on mild summer days, temperatures can become dangerously hot. Leaving the air conditioning on or the windows down are still not good options as your pet can still become anxious and overheated if left alone. Have you ever seen platelets under the microscope? Platelets, or thrombocytes, play a big part in blood clotting, and when a blood draw is slow, the platelets will start to form clots in the collection tubes!

This bloodsmear shows platelet clumps in what we call the "feathered edge" of the film. The platelets are the more purple cells surrounded by the mauve-coloured red blood cells.

Say hi to "Phallan"! This little girl is 19 weeks old, and she finished her puppy vaccine series this week! Her name is derived from an old Gaelic word that means "little wolf", and this girl can definitely howl! She is a super friendly girl, and her owner said she loves to sunbathe!

Meet "Spot"! She was adopted recently by our technician Courtney, and came to spend the day with us last week. "Spot" is an outdoor rabbit, and unfortunately Courtney found a tick on her! The tick was safely removed, and "Spot" had her nails trimmed before being passed around by the rest of the team. She was so sweet and soft!

Check out these before and after pictures from RVT Jennifer's cat "Basil", who was here for a COHAT last week. COHAT stands for Comprehensive Oral Health Assessment and Treatment, and this means that "Basil" had all of his teeth x-rayed, charted, scaled and polished, and we removed two very small molars. Jennifer brought "Basil" in after she found that one of his teeth had fallen out. Cats are very brave and will cover up their dental pain, so it is hard to tell sometimes when their teeth are in need of treatment. Doing dental x-rays is always important as we cannot see the roots of the teeth, just like at the human dentist!

As the weather is getting warmer, it’s important to recognize the symptoms of overheating in your pets. Take a look at the most common signs that your pet may have been exposed to too much heat. Be extra cautious if you have a breed of dog or cat with a short nasal passage, for example Pugs, Boston Terriers, British Shorthairs, or Persians. Call us right away if you think your pet has become severely overheated.

When a dog or cat breaks a bone in a limb, one of the first things we can do is bandage and splint the leg to support the limb.
RVTs Jennifer and Laura built this bandage, called a Robert Jones Bandage, on this pup who broke the radius and ulna in her front left leg last week. Our techs made sure to label the bandage with a broken bone cut out of vetwrap!
