Don’t forget to check your pet after every walk!

As the weather warms up, ticks become more active. These tiny parasites can carry serious diseases, making regular tick checks an important part of your pet’s routine.

After each walk, be sure to check your pet’s:
- Between the toes
- In and around the ears
- Under the collar
- Neck and chest area
- Armpits and groin area
- Around the eyes and muzzle.

Ticks can be very small and easy to miss, so take a few extra minutes to carefully inspect your pet, especially after spending time in tall grass, wooded areas, or parks.

πŸ’‘ If you find a tick:
β€’ Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool.
β€’ Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
β€’ Pull straight out with steady pressure.
β€’ Avoid twisting, squeezing, or applying substances such as petroleum jelly or alcohol.

βœ… Regular flea and tick prevention remains the best way to help protect your pet throughout the season.

Not sure which preventive product is right for your pet? We're happy to help - give us a call!

Summer plants that can harm pets!
Summer brings beautiful blooms and lush gardens, but some common plants can be dangerous for our furry friends.

Here are a few plants that pet owners should be aware of:
- Lilies
Even a small amount can cause severe kidney damage in cats.

- Hydrangeas
Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy if ingested.

- Rhododendrons & Azaleas
May affect the digestive, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.

- Lily of the Valley
Contains toxins that can affect the heart.

- Hostas
A popular garden plant that can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs and cats.

Signs of plant toxicity may include:
β€’ Drooling
β€’ Vomiting
β€’ Diarrhea
β€’ Loss of appetite
β€’ Lethargy
β€’ Difficulty breathing

The safest approach is to keep potentially toxic plants out of reach and supervise pets when they're exploring the yard or garden.

If you suspect your pet has chewed or eaten a toxic plant, contact your veterinarian right away.

A little prevention can help keep your pet safe all summer long!

Did you know pets can get dehydrated faster than we think - especially during warmer days?

Here are a few simple ways to help keep your furry friend hydrated:
- Always provide fresh, clean water
- Add extra water to dry food when possible
- Bring water on walks and trips
- Watch for signs like tiredness, dry gums, or decreased appetite.

Cats especially tend to drink less water naturally, so pet fountains or wet food can really help!
Fun fact - сats naturally have a low thirst drive because their ancestors got most of their hydration from prey in the wild.

A happy, hydrated pet is a healthier pet.

Did you know many cats love nibbling on cat grass? 🌱

Pet grass (often grown from wheat, oat, or barley seeds) can help support digestion, reduce hairballs, and satisfy your cat’s natural urge to chew on greenery.

A few quick tips:
β€’ Use grass grown specifically for pets
β€’ Keep it fresh and clean
β€’ Place it somewhere easy for your cat to reach
β€’ Always monitor curious kittens at first

Not every plant at home is safe for cats - but pet grass is a simple and fun way to bring a little nature indoors safely.

Does your cat enjoy cat grass? Share a photo in the comments! πŸ“Έ

Happy Victoria Day from all of us at Horsman Road Animal Hospital

Did you know? Victoria Day was originally created to celebrate Queen Victoria’s Birthday and has been observed in Canada since 1845. Today, it also marks the unofficial start of summer across the country!

For many pets, this long weekend means extra outdoor adventures, backyard time, and family cuddles. Just remember to keep your furry friends safe around BBQ foods, fireworks, and warm temperatures.

We hope you and your pets enjoy a safe and relaxing holiday together!

Please note that our clinic is closed today for the holiday. We will reopen with regular hours tomorrow.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Victoria Day!
