Can all dogs swim?

Many people assume that all dogs are natural swimmers - but that's actually a myth!

While some breeds are known for their love of water, not every dog feels comfortable or safe in it.

Breeds that often enjoy swimming:
• Labrador Retrievers
• Golden Retrievers
• Portuguese Water Dogs
• Newfoundlands

Breeds that may have more difficulty in the water:
• Bulldogs
• French Bulldogs
• Pugs
• Dachshunds

Body shape, leg length, fitness level, age, and individual personality all play a role in a dog's swimming ability.

If you're introducing your dog to water this summer:
Never force them in.
💙 Start in shallow water.
💙 Use positive reinforcement.
💙 Consider a life jacket, especially when boating or swimming in open water.
💙 Always supervise your pet around water.

Remember - even strong swimmers can become tired, disoriented, or get into trouble unexpectedly.

We are excited to now offer laser therapy at our clinic!

Laser therapy is a non-invasive treatment that can help reduce pain, inflammation, and support faster healing. It is commonly used for musculoskeletal injuries and chronic conditions, but it can also be very beneficial after surgeries - both elective and non-elective - as well as following dental procedures.

One of our current laser therapy patients is Bandit — a 3-year-old Maltese mix who recently came in for his 3rd treatment session focused on his spine. He has been doing great, and we are so happy to be able to offer this additional treatment option to help our patients stay comfortable and recover more smoothly.

We are excited to provide another option to help our patients stay comfortable and recover more smoothly. If you think your pet may benefit from laser therapy, feel free to ask our team for more information!

Congratulations to the winner of our Annual Dog Basket Draw! 🎉

We were so happy to present the basket to one of our regular and always very welcomed clients, pictured here with one of her beloved family members - Narco.

Don’t forget to check your pet after every walk!

As the weather warms up, ticks become more active. These tiny parasites can carry serious diseases, making regular tick checks an important part of your pet’s routine.

After each walk, be sure to check your pet’s:
- Between the toes
- In and around the ears
- Under the collar
- Neck and chest area
- Armpits and groin area
- Around the eyes and muzzle.

Ticks can be very small and easy to miss, so take a few extra minutes to carefully inspect your pet, especially after spending time in tall grass, wooded areas, or parks.

💡 If you find a tick:
• Use fine-tipped tweezers or a tick removal tool.
• Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible.
• Pull straight out with steady pressure.
• Avoid twisting, squeezing, or applying substances such as petroleum jelly or alcohol.

✅ Regular flea and tick prevention remains the best way to help protect your pet throughout the season.

Summer plants that can harm pets!
Summer brings beautiful blooms and lush gardens, but some common plants can be dangerous for our furry friends.

Here are a few plants that pet owners should be aware of:
- Lilies
Even a small amount can cause severe kidney damage in cats.

- Hydrangeas
Can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and lethargy if ingested.

- Rhododendrons & Azaleas
May affect the digestive, cardiovascular, and nervous systems.

- Lily of the Valley
Contains toxins that can affect the heart.

- Hostas
A popular garden plant that can cause vomiting and diarrhea in dogs and cats.

Signs of plant toxicity may include:
• Drooling
• Vomiting
• Diarrhea
• Loss of appetite
• Lethargy
• Difficulty breathing

The safest approach is to keep potentially toxic plants out of reach and supervise pets when they're exploring the yard or garden.

If you suspect your pet has chewed or eaten a toxic plant, contact your veterinarian right away.

A little prevention can help keep your pet safe all summer long!
