Our Neurology team wanted to share this wonderful story of one of their patients Vincent, a written testimonal from Vincent’s owner below: 🐾

“Vincent came to me as a 6 year old stray cat in 2018. He was a silly cat who liked to snuggle and loved to play and I fell in love with him. Although he was FIV+, he remained healthy and full of life until spring of 2024 when subtle but troubling changes began – he stopped playing, became withdrawn and his gait and sitting positions seemed odd. He wasn’t himself. I knew something was wrong. Despite multiple vet visits, nothing definitive was found.
One late afternoon in August 2024, he started stumbling and falling and we rushed to an emergency vet who determined it was a dire neurological issue and he needed to see a neurologist NOW! The next day, my vets at Tavistock were able to get me an appointment at MOVEH.
We had the great fortune of seeing a wonderful neurologist at MOVEH Dr. Isabelle Ducharme. She examined Vincent and I could tell right away that we were in great hands and that Dr. Ducharme was brilliant. She already had some ideas of what it might be and said there were options which gave me hope.
Though an MRI was initially planned, concerns about Vincent’s lungs led her to choose a quicker CT scan, which revealed tumors near his spine likely affecting his mobility and also a possible spot on his lungs. While several treatment options were discussed, including surgery and radiation, we decided to begin with treatment with Cytosar the following week. The entire team took great care with Vincent which put me at ease.
Over the next couple days, I did a lot of soul searching over what was best for Vincent. We modified things at home to keep him safe from falling. His mobility became considerably worse and he began to deteriorate. I just felt that it wouldn’t be fair to put him through too much more. I called and spoke to Dr. Ducharme and her kindness and care for me and Vincent was evident. Dr. Ducharme suggested we try a conservative approach with steroids, carefully explaining the risks and limitations.
She cautioned me that this was not a cure but it could possibly work for a period of time and if we didn’t see any improvement in a few days, then I would have to make a very sad decision.
Remarkably, within a day, Vincent already seemed brighter. Within a few days, he was walking. After about a week, Vincent almost gave me a heart attack by appearing behind me downstairs which meant he had climbed over a baby gate and came downstairs which would have been impossible for him to do just a few days before.
Over the following months, his mobility steadily improved, and by fall, his playful and affectionate personality had returned. My prayers had been answered. Today, Vincent continues to do well under Dr. Ducharme’s expert care, and she also referred us to Internal Medicine for an ultrasound where we saw Dr. Brown who was very knowledgeable and helpful. We monitor his condition with periodic checkups. I am endlessly grateful to Dr. Ducharme and her incredible team for their expertise, genuine compassion, and for helping give my best friend Vincent a second chance at a happy comfortable life.”

We are happy to report Vincent is doing very well and as playful as ever!❤️🐾🐈

Blood Donor Benji has entered his retirement era ✨

Benji has reached the age of retirement, and so will be exiting from the MOVH Blood Donor program. Over his time with us Benji has made 19 donations, which is an amazing accomplishment. As a negative blood type (the universal donor) Benji has helped countless dogs in his career. We are eternally grateful to Benji and his family for their commitment to the program. We ❤️ you Benji!

When Fleetwood first came through our doors, he was quiet, feverish, and not himself. What began as a suspected case of pneumonia quickly became a complex medical journey. One that tested his resilience and called on the full depth of our team’s expertise.

Over the weeks that followed, Fleetwood faced setbacks: persistent coughing, systemic inflammation, and eventually, a diagnosis that required surgical intervention. Our surgical team performed a thoracotomy and lobectomy to remove a pulmonary abscess. It was a delicate procedure, but Fleetwood pulled through with incredible strength.

He spent time in our ICU, monitored closely by our internal medicine and critical care teams. Every member of our staff, from diagnostics to recovery, played a role in helping Fleetwood heal. By August 28th, he was back for suture removal, bright-eyed and clinically well. His prognosis? ✨ Excellent. ✨

These are the moments we live for. The ones where skill meets heart, and where support from our program, makes it possible for pets like Fleetwood to receive the care they need.

To Fleetwood: thank you for trusting us.
To our team: thank you for showing up with everything you’ve got.
💙

🎃 Keep the pumpkins, lose the panic. 🎃

Fall is beautiful, but it can be risky for our pets. As the leaves change, so do the hazards. Every autumn, veterinary emergency hospitals see cases that could have been prevented. Here’s what to watch for:

🍫 Toxic treats: Halloween candy, grapes, onions, and fatty leftovers can be dangerous.
🍄 Wild mushrooms: Some are deadly, and pets (and most pet parents) don’t know the difference.
🧊 Antifreeze: Just a few drops can be fatal, and it (unfortunately) tastes sweet to pets.
🔥 Fire pits & candles: Cozy for us, but risky for curious paws and wagging tails.
🧺 Decorations & costumes: Choking hazards, anxiety triggers, and overheating risks.
🧽 Cleaning products & pest control: Fall deep cleans and rodent traps can be toxic.
🦝 Wildlife encounters: Raccoons, skunks, and coyotes are more active this time of year.
🌧️ Cold snaps & slippery leaves: Senior pets and short-haired breeds are especially vulnerable.

If your pet shows signs like vomiting, tremors, or sudden weakness, that is the time to act. Don’t wait. Call your veterinary team.

? 10/10. We're obsessed.

Daily walks = healthier, happier dogs!

It’s not just exercise, it’s mental stimulation, bonding time, and a chance to explore the world. (let them go on that extra-long sniffari).

From better sleep to fewer behaviour issues, a walk a day keeps the vet away 😉

🧡 September 30th is National Day for Truth and Reconciliation 🧡

In many Indigenous cultures, animals are more than life's greatest companions, they’re teachers, protectors, and part of the sacred balance with the land.

Residential and day schools disrupted not only families, but entire ways of knowing and relating to the world, including relationships with animals and nature.

As veterinary professionals, we recognize that healing includes honouring these connections and offering care that respects Indigenous knowledge systems, traditions, and relationships with animals.

We don’t have all the answers. But we’re committed to asking the questions.
🧡 Are we offering culturally safe care?
🧡 Are Indigenous pet owners being heard in our hospital?
🧡 Are we doing enough to support reconciliation?

We’re listening. We’re learning. We’re reflecting. And we invite our community to do the same.

Across our hospitals, we see care and compassion in action every day. This we’re sharing one such story out of our VCA Canada Forest Lawn Animal Hospital location.

Dusty Rose, a bright-eyed cat who’s been part of that community since 2017, had disappeared while her owner was hospitalized for health issues. Upon the owners return, Dusty was found injured and in obvious pain; an eye injury required enucleation to give her a comfortable life.

Thanks to the the team’s swift action and the support of our program covering part of her care, Dusty received immediate treatment and is now back to batting at ribbons, purring for chin scratches, and chasing sunbeams. Her recovery is a an amazing reminder of what our network can accomplish together.

A huge👏thank-you👏 to the Forest Lawn team and our community give-back programs, which help make stories like Dusty’s possible.
