What’s Really in Your Dog’s Food?

Not all kibble is created equal, and some ingredients can do more harm than good, especially when it comes to blood sugar, digestion, and long-term health. Here's what to watch out for:

- Corn, Corn Gluten Meal – These ingredients are high on the glycemic index, meaning they spike your dog’s blood sugar quickly. Over time, this can lead to weight gain, inflammation, and even diabetes.

- Wheat Flour, Wheat Gluten – Another set of high-glycemic fillers. They're cheap sources of carbohydrates that offer little nutritional value and are common allergens for many dogs.

- Rice, Brewers Rice – While rice may seem harmless, brewers rice is the leftover fragments from processing — low in nutrients and high in starch, which also increases blood sugar levels.

- Meat By-Products – Sounds okay? Think again. These are the leftover parts (like organs and tissue), not always from healthy animals, and often lack traceability. Not ideal for your best friend.

- Unspecified Animal Fat – If it doesn’t name the animal (like “chicken fat” or “beef fat”), you have no idea where it came from. That’s a big red flag when it comes to quality and safety.

When shopping for pet food, look for named, whole ingredients and low-glycemic carbs like sweet potato, lentils, or oats. Your dog’s body (and blood sugar!) will thank you.

Believe it or not, we’ve got your back! We carry diatomaceous earth—a natural, pet-friendly solution that’s gentle on your plants but deadly to beetles.

Tip: I use a flour sifter to lightly dust the plants (icing sugar consistency) - it’s easy and effective.
