Seirios K9 Academy

Seirios K9 Academy We also teach the owners everything they need. 🐶 I specialize in rehabilitation and modifying aggressive behaviour for all dog breeds.

Nous voulons que l’éducation soit une belle expérience pour vous et votre chien, et vous apprenons tout ce qu’il faut pour un lien fort. 🐶

We want training to be a great experience for you and your dog. My mission is to help train people to be greater pet owners. There are so many dogs ending up in pounds or shelters due to behaviour problems that could have been prevented with proper training. Knowledge is not only power….it saves lives.

🐕 Training Tip: Teaching Your Dog to “Heel” Properly

“Heel” doesn’t just mean your dog walking beside you.
It means your dog is mentally connected to you, paying attention, and moving with purpose instead of dragging you down the street like they’re late for a flight. 😅

A proper heel teaches:
✔️ Focus
✔️ Impulse control
✔️ Respect for leash pressure
✔️ Better communication between dog and handler

When teaching heel, don’t focus only on position focus on engagement.

A few important tips:

🔹 Keep the leash loose but meaningful
The leash is communication, not a towing rope. Constant tension teaches dogs to lean into pressure instead of responding to it.

🔹 Reward attention, not just position
If your dog checks in with you voluntarily, mark and reward it. Attention is the foundation of good walking.

🔹 Change directions often
Random left turns, right turns, stops, and pace changes teach the dog to follow YOU instead of auto-piloting ahead.

🔹 Don’t let pulling become rehearsal
Every step a dog takes while pulling reinforces the behavior. Consistency matters more than strength.

🔹 Start in low distraction environments
Trying to teach heel in a busy park too early is like teaching a teenager to drive during rush hour downtown Montreal. Set the dog up to succeed first.

Remember:
A good heel is not about robotic movement. It’s about communication, clarity, and teamwork.

At Seirios K9 Dog Training Academy, we teach dogs how to work with their owners not just obey commands mechanically.

Piper and her owner Veronica putting in the work. 👌

Today’s focus was working on a “Sit” from the Heel position while also building clarity and reliability with the “Stay” command.

🔹 Heel:
The dog walks beside the handler in a controlled position, focused and engaged rather than pulling ahead or drifting around. A proper heel teaches structure, awareness, and communication between dog and handler.

🔹 Sit from Heel:
From movement, Piper is learning to smoothly transition into a sit position beside Veronica without breaking focus or creating chaos. This helps build responsiveness, impulse control, and cleaner obedience overall.

🔹 Stay:
Stay means remain in position until released regardless of distractions, movement, or distance. This command is one of the most important foundations for real-world reliability because it teaches patience, self-control, and accountability.

A solid stay is not just about the dog freezing in place… it’s about the dog mentally understanding:
“Hold this position until I’m told otherwise.”

Small details matter in dog training. Clean positioning, timing, consistency, and communication are what create reliable dogs not just repeated commands.

Piper is making solid progress. 🐾
