Matting is pretty spooky for your dog and your groomer! ๐ป ๐ซง
Without regular brushing loose or shedding hairs can twist and tangle around each other, which over time, if left unmanaged, can become matted right to the skin without regular maintenance.
Getting wet from rain, swimming, baths, or excessive licking causes hair fibers to swell and curl tighter as they dry, locking tangles into place. ๐ง๏ธ
Stages of Matting ๐ชข
Knotting: Small, loose tangles begin to form in the coat that can still be gently teased apart with your fingers or a comb.
Matting: Tangles multiply, trap dirt, debris, and moisture, and contract into firm clumps that tug against the skin.
Severe Matting / Pelting: The entire undercoat and outer coat fuse into a rigid, solid armor-like mat that cuts off air circulation and painfully pulls on the skin with every movement.
Brushing Tips ๐ชฎ
Brush daily or every couple days
Use line brushing: Part the fur to expose the skin and brush outward using a slicker brush or metal greyhound comb. Just brushing the top layer leaves hidden mats at the root.
Focus on High-Friction Zones: Behind the ears, Under armpits and legs, Around the collar/Harness area, Back legs and tail, and the paws
All of these tips will help us be able to keep your furry friends more fluffy! ๐พ
