Steeldust Dobermans Breeding healthy & long-lived, natural Dobermans with excellent form-to-function conformation and amazing temperaments! We are super excited about her!

Tracy’s father had Dobermans & German Shepherds when she was very young but then he got solely into German Shepherds. Tracy had her own German Shepherd but there was just something about the Doberman that she couldn’t shake. Tracy & Alan finally got their first Doberman in 2010 and they were hooked on the breed! We did lose Parker, our first Doberman to a freak accident just before her 4th birthda

y – just heartbreaking. After our hearts healed, we were fortunate to acquire her ½ brother, Roux, who needed to be rehomed. We were lucky to have him in our lives until he was 12 years old. He helped raise and taught 3 other Doberman pups we bought – Quinn, Reeva, and Karisma (aka Baby K). Karisma is our foundation breeding bitch. We spent a long time looking for our foundation girl, believing that the dam is most important for the foundation line. We wanted a well conformed bitch, suitable for the specials ring, with awesome health markers and a superior temperament. It took us 6 years to find her and Karisma has checked all the boxes for us. She is the only breeding dog in Canada with her dam's bloodlines. There will be more information on the page about our breeding philosophy; why we don’t crop even though we love the look of a cropped eared Doberman; and all about the health, titles, training, and escapades of Karisma and our other Dobermans.

We had a fun weekend sprinting - thank you Foothills Gazehound Club, Stampede City Whippets & Ibizan Hound Club and all the amazing volunteers!

Spencer, at 14 months, achieved his Sprinter title and ran a personal best of 8.95 seconds over the 100 metre course.

Reeva, at 7 1/2 years, achieved her Veteran Sprinter title.

So proud of both!

Interesting study and information!

I always recommend spaying or neutering after the dog is 2 years old, or an x-ray showing the growth plates have closed.

Preventing unwanted litters is a goal we all share—but it's time to rethink the surgical approach. Hysterectomies and vasectomies, which preserve hormonal balance, can safely be performed as early as 8 weeks of age, making dogs sterile without disrupting their natural hormones.

In this study, researchers looked at whether the age at which dogs were spayed or neutered, meaning how long they were exposed to their natural s*x hormones, affected how healthy they were in old age. They studied a group of long-lived pet dogs to learn what helps dogs live longer, healthier lives. Dogs with the fewest age-related health problems were considered the most “robust.”

The results showed that both male and female dogs who kept their hormones longer (i.e., were spayed or neutered later) were 3 to 10 times more likely to be healthy in old age compared to those altered earlier. Once hormone exposure and age were taken into account, there was no difference in old-age health between males and females.

This study highlights how important s*x hormones may be for staying healthy later in life and shows that early-life decisions—like when to spay or neuter—can have long-term effects on health.
