Apple Rescue & 100 year old Crabapple trees

Last fall our Apple Rescue coordinator Anna Grant discovered that Buz Harmsworth’s 100 year old crabapple trees made very tasty juice! She promised his family that we would graft some of the precious branches on to Groundswell apple trees. This year Buz’s daughter Katherine invited Deborah Griffith and Petra Downing to collect branches from the precious ancient heritage crabapple and transparent trees for grafting. Petra took bundles of branches to her farm near Fairmont for grafting and Deborah took some to Groundswell. If the grafting is successful we look forward to trying out these tasty apples in the future!

An interesting comment from Katherine was that her father Buz felt these trees have lived longer than the rest of the orchard, because they had afternoon shade from steep large hill across the road from the orchard. Never watered, so relying on nature alone.

Thank you Anna for identifying these special apples and for the Harmsworth family inviting us to participate in a historic moment extending the life of 100 year old apple trees.

What’s happening at the Greenhouse?
Tomatoes are in the ground, we are washing pots and then transplanting wee seedlings into pots. All our wonderful volunteers are pitching in to make this a plentiful spring and plant sale!

Need a rental Garden beds for the spring summer & fall this year?

Groundswell has a quite few available this year after our students from J. A. Laird left to use their own new ten beds. Exciting for them!!!

We have rental garden beds available in both sites at the Greenhouse and Mt Nelson. Both are near David Thompson Secondary School, in Invermere.
