Over the last 8 years I have personally fostered 27+ dogs. Through training, I have helped many more rescue dogs than that. I frequently get new dogs adjusted to a new household. At this point, I have a system that works super well.

Meet Chip! 🐶

Chip is a 10 month old Labrador Retriever. His owners have done a great job with his foundations already. During his stay with us we will be focusing on e-collar training, as well as continuing to work on calm greetings with people & neutral behaviour around other dogs. His owner hopes to use him as a therapy dog in future!

3 tips to help gain off leash freedom

Practice recalls on a longline: start somewhere quiet with low distractions & practice teaching your dog to come on cue. Once you perfect this in a quiet environment, gradually start working in increasingly busier environments, until your dog is able to recall every time, anywhere.

✨ tip using high pitch vocals & backing away can cause excitement & encourage your dog to come to you.

Teach your dog the art of doing nothing: taking your dog to new places with varying degrees of busyness, & helping them learn to be calm, relaxed, & to tune out the environment, is a good way to teach them to be neutral to their environment & check in with you.

Master the leash: master your dog’s obedience on leash. Practice often & in different environments. If your dog can’t listen to you on leash, how can you expect them to listen to you off leash? Having perfect on leash skills is a precursor to having perfect off leash skills.

4 habits that strengthen your relationship with your 🐶 🐾

Clear communication: Dogs thrive best when they have a clear understanding of what is expected from them. When we are consistent with our verbal cues, body language, & tone of voice, we create a clear communication system with our dogs. This helps with feel secure & connected to you.

✨Tip; audibly marking behaviours we like (“yes”) & behaviours we don’t like (“no”) can really help with clarity.

Quality time: Doing things with your dog that are enjoyable to THEM — walks, hikes, playtime, or training — helps to build trust & strengthens your bond with your dog. Have some fun with your dog!

Establishing a routine: Having a routine around walks, meal times, & training creates a sense of security & helps build trust. This helps your dog gain confidence, and encourages your dog to seek further connection with you.

Hand feeding: Hand feeding meals is a great way to bond with, & train your dog. This helps not only helps reinforce positive behaviours, but also strengthen your bond.
