So we're back from holidays and we have fresh eggs! Come and get ya some!👌🤠👍🥚🍳🐔🐣🐥..oh and by the way, we still have some freshly frozen meat chickens from this year's harvest! Best ones yet!!

Our egg production levels are rebounding. Following an unfortunate incident involving raccoons, our hens experienced stress and temporarily reduced their output of farm fresh eggs. However, things appear to have stabilized, and our daily egg count is increasing. The hens are content once again. Farm Fresh Eggs are available once more!

We have meat chickens available! Starting fresh processing within the next couple of weeks. If interested, please send me a text at 705-662-1526 so we can reserve some for you. The breed is White Rock ( same as previous years), but we only used fresh grass in a mobile tractor and feed from our local co-op in Verner. Best quality combination available. Same price as last year $6/lb average weight from 8 to 10 pounds. Yes, big birds but all meat! There is no water injection like the ones in the supermarkets.

Let's talk about eggs 🥚 and egg prices 💲 from farmers.

As I was collecting my eggs today, I thought, gosh, I wonder how many people don't realize the little bit of p**p or mud on these shells is less harmful than the eggs they buy in the store?!

So, let's start with why that is. Eggs have a natural, invisible outer coating, it's called the bloom. That bloom protects the shell's pores and doesn't let anything into the egg. Nothing is going to replicate exactly this bloom God creates for these eggs. Nothing.

When you wash that egg, you wash off the bloom.

Your store bought eggs are washed in a processing plant, somewhere.

Okay, so how do the eggs stay safe after the bloom is gone?

Well, the eggs are sanitized. How you ask? Dipped into a sanitizing solution, which commonly contains sodium hypochlorite, commonly known as bleach, is a chlorine-based compound used as a disinfectant and bleaching agent, found in household cleaners, pool sanitizers, and water treatment. Yes. Look it up.

The eggs are not bleached to make them white, but dipped in a solution containing Chlorine to kill bacteria. Another method used is sometimes, pasteurization, which involves heating the egg to a certain temperature to kill pathogens.

What I want you to know is this, when that bloom is washed off.....ANYTHING can get into your egg. INCLUDING the chlorine solution and contaminate the egg you're about to eat. Yes, it's true. This is why we refrigerate our washed eggs on the farm to decrease the growth of pathogens that can make it through the shell.

Is that chlorine organic? Who cares?!?!? It's CHLORINE IN YOUR EGG!!! Grosssssss. And let me remind you that this is approved by the good ole government rules! No thanks.

Personally, I don't wash my eggs until I eat them.

One last thing I want you to know is this, those eggs in the store, they are usually 30 days old before you can even buy them. Have they been completely properly refrigerated at the correct temp for that 30 days to make sure that they are safe to eat since said bloom has been off of it for 30 days and dipped into a toxic solution?!?!
We at Iron Horse Acres simply wipe our eggs and keep nesting boxes clean with wood shavings or straw.

So, when you see a farmer selling eggs for 5 or 6 or even 7 dollars a dozen right now, just know those differences before you complain about price.

Here’s a fact not many of you may know ! By law, an egg can be sold up to 30 days after the date it was put in the carton. And farmers have up to 30 days to go from when the egg is laid to the time it’s put in the carton and sold, That means supermarket eggs can be two months old by the time you buy them and have a sell by date of upto 4 to 6 weeks after that 😳 so the “ fresh eggs “ you are buying could be over 3 months old by the time you eat them 😩 it’s no wonder the free range eggs we eat and sell from our own happy little hens not only taste totally different but are full of goodness and nutrition due to there natural diet and being so fresh ❤️

So here at Iron Horse Acres, we believe in helping out others with neat tips and tricks to make homesteading more enjoyable. For those who keep chickens or rabbits in pens using hardware cloth and find it difficult to see your animals, simply paint the wire mesh with flat black paint and watch it disappear. The transformation is incredible. Check out the pictures.
