🚨 Disease Alert 🚨
Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE) & West Nile Virus (WNV)

Within Southern Ontario, there have been 4 confirmed cases of mosquito-borne diseases in the last 30 days
Case 1: EEE - under vaccinated
Case 2: EEE - unvaccinated
Case 3: WNV - unvaccinated
Case 4: EEE - unvaccinated

EEE & WNV remain active threats to horses in our region during mosquito season. Both diseases can cause severe neurological illness and, in many cases, are fatal.

What Horse Owners Need to Know:
EEE and WNV affect the brain and nervous system.
Signs may include: fever, loss of coordination, depression, stumbling, muscle tremors, or seizures.

Prevention is Key 🛡️

✔ Vaccinate: annual vaccination against EEE and WNV is strongly recommended
✔ Mosquito Control: eliminate standing water where mosquitoes breed (buckets, troughs, tires, puddles), use fans in barns and insect-repellent sprays

Keeping your horses protected through vaccination and mosquito management is the best way to reduce their risk.

Let’s talk RECOVERY!! As we roll through the middle of July, it’s easy to get caught up in making it to every competition but don’t forget to embrace active rest (and sometimes straight up rest!) amidst the chaos. You and your horse will be better/stronger with some hacking, turnout and good nutrition after big competitions. Give those muscles a chance to refuel and those tendons a chance to heal!

Stryder and I are enjoying our rest week after climbing the Flesherton hills last weekend!

‼️Did you know horses are most at risk of overtraining around 28 weeks without a break?!‼️They can also maintain their fitness for a month when given access to long turn out hours!
