We have some unfortunate news to share with cat owners near Boston Pizza Fernie. We have a deceased male neutered domestic medium hair young cat with no microchip.

Please call the clinic at 250 423 2620 if your beautiful cat is missing.

The team at FVS is heartbroken for this cats family.

Leptospirosis is a bacterial infection that can affect both dogs and humans. It’s most commonly spread through the urine of wildlife, which can contaminate standing water, soil, or puddles—something to keep in mind during the warmer, wetter months.
🐾 Dogs can become infected by drinking from or wading through contaminated water, especially in areas where wildlife is common. Symptoms can vary but may include fever, lethargy, vomiting, or signs of kidney or liver issues.
🐾 While we haven’t seen any cases locally, it’s still a good idea to be aware of the risk factors—especially if your dog loves outdoor adventures.
📞 If you have questions or want to talk about whether the leptospirosis vaccine is right for your dog, feel free to give us a call at 250-423-2620 to book in with one of our veterinarians

🐾 Thank You, Matteo!🎓

We have sadly said goodbye to Matteo, our amazing vet student who has been with us for the past two months. From the very beginning, he impressed us all with his kindness, thoughtfulness, calm demeanor, and sharp mind.

Not only did he receive glowing feedback from clients, but our entire team absolutely loved working with him. He jumped in with both feet, supported the team wherever he could, and brought such a positive energy to the clinic every single day.

Thank you, Matteo, for all your hard work, your compassion, and for being such a genuinely wonderful human. You’ll be deeply missed, and we know without a doubt that you’re going to make an incredible veterinarian.

Dog Owners—Be Aware of Toxic Wild Plants!🐶🌿

Summer means more time outside with our dogs, but it also brings hidden dangers in the form of common wild plants found along trails, ditches, parks, and even backyards here in the Elk Valley. Some of these w**ds are highly toxic to dogs—even a small amount can lead to serious illness or worse.

Poison Hemlock – The most dangerous and common toxic w**d in our area. Grows up to 3 m tall, with purple-blotched stems and white umbrella-shaped flowers. Ingestion can cause seizures, respiratory failure, and death. Found in ditches, fields, and disturbed areas.

Cow Parsnip & Giant Hogw**d – Look similar but cause chemical burns and blisters if touched. These thrive along rivers, paths, and wet areas.

Common Tansy – Pretty yellow flowers, but toxic if eaten. Can cause liver damage and seizures.

Hound’s-tongue – Burrs stick to fur and skin, and ingestion can lead to liver failure. Often seen in pastures and along roads.

False Hellebore – A leafy plant in moist soil that causes vomiting, slowed heart rate, and collapse if eaten.

Bittersweet Nightshade – A vine with red berries that dogs sometimes eat—very poisonous.

Dogbane – The name says it all — contains cardiac toxins. Found near rivers and roadsides.

Baneberry, Mayapple, Bloodroot – Forest-floor plants with toxic berries or roots that can cause serious neurological or organ damage.

Even dead or dried plants like poison hemlock can still be dangerous.

How to protect your pup:
✔️ Learn to identify these plants—especially poison hemlock’s spotted stems
✔️ Keep dogs on leash near ditches, parks, and trails
✔️ Remove any suspect plants from your yard
✔️ If your dog shows signs of drooling, trembling, vomiting, or weakness—get vet help immediately

Let’s all help keep the Elk Valley dogs safe this summer 🐾
