An update for all about Nova Pet Academy. Due to VISA restrictions around employment, I am not able to continue working and have since paused all services.

This does not mean I am abandoning it all, I want to bring you all along with me and stay in touch. So I will be moving to writing blog posts about my experience as a dog trainer going through the path to veterinary school.

Theres often some clash about what vets know and dont know regarding animal behavior, what trainers know about nutrition, pet care, etc. I hope to maybe shed some light on what I can :)

We all have those moments when we feel stuck or compare ourselves to the dogs we see online or on our daily walks who seem like they have it all together. Truth is though, they rarely ever do.

Everyone struggles, and just because it may not be visible at every given moment doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Keep with it, training is all about building a strong and healthy relationship with your dog. Enjoy the process whenever you can.

What you do everyday matters, the small actions that most people overlook can have huge benefits when it comes to a well-mannered pup.

What's one thing you do everyday to practice good behavior?

Is your dog “overreacting”… or are they actually reactive?
Reactivity is more common than most pet parents realize, and it’s not about having a “bad dog.”

I just added a brand-new article to the Resource Library breaking down:
✔️ What reactivity really means
✔️ Why it happens
✔️ How we can prevent it and support our dogs

Read Reactivity 101: What is a “Reactive” Dog? now in the Resource Library!

I am a huge fan of adventure cats - the whole reason behind me choosing a high energy Bengal was to have another hiking and camping companion. Sigrid loves it, it keeps her happy and healthy (and not causing too much terror inside the home).

While there are risks like fleas and ticks, prevention is key. That and keeping them on leash at all times to ensure their safety against wildlife or other dogs you may encounter on your walks.

Its not something I recommend for every cat but even allowing your cat fresh air in the form of a catio is amazing enrichment to give your cat a bigger world than just your home.

Just always keep safety as number 1 and enjoy spending more quality time with your kitty :)

Stop guessing and start training with confidence.

A good training plan is key in turning any training goal into real results, whether you’re working on loose leash walking, recall, reactivity, puppy skills, or advanced behaviors.

With sensitive or reactive dogs, your options for properly exercising your pup may be limited. No busy streets, maybe not even a walk down the neighborhood.

Here are some of my favourite ways to exercise my sensitive dog:

Hikes: We love to hike and are always looking for and finding new trails, hikes are great because even if there's a few people on the trail youre often spread out enough that you may not even run into them

Agility: Dog sports of any kind are a great way to work your dogs brain and body. Sports give your dog a job which can help them cope with potential triggers near by. You can do private classes to avoid having any dogs and then as they learn the game you can move to a small group of calm dogs to also work desensitization.

Bikejoring: This is still a relatively new sport we've tried and Nova fell in love immediately, the moment she learned she could run full speed it was on. And being a fast pup it was a great way to let her run and fulfill that need.

Movement puzzles: movement puzzles are a form of training that promotes problem solving and confidence by moving over obstacles to get food. They're also easy to do inside on cold or rainy days.

Ever wonder why small dogs have there stereotype of being yappy and a little crazy?

Well truth be told, many people choose to manage little dogs by always picking them up or just letting them pull on the leash and bark because they're only 3kg compared to a 30kg dog who could pull you over with their strength.

So many small breeds are struggling since we have somehow decided that they because of their size they dont need the same training as a medium or large breed dog. While yes they are smaller and easier to manage, that doesnt change the fact they are stressed and need help.

Small dogs are just as capable and are often incredibly intelligent with many mini breeds excelling in agility and scentwork sports.

Let's not forget about our little friends when we talk about training and helping our pups thrive.
