Clinic cat Kit has been looking through her files and realized today is National Take Your Cat to the Vet Day! She would like to invite all her kitty friends who need vaccines, a check up, or maybe just haven’t seen a vet in a little too long to come for a visit!

Let's talk about Echinococcus multilocularis!
EM is a zoonotic tapeworm that our dogs can get from wild canids, such as coyotes and foxes, when they come in contact with their f***s or ingest contaminated raw meat (ie. are fed raw meat from animals such as moose, catch an infected mouse, or eat off a found carcass). The thing that differs EM from other tapeworms is that it can cause Alveolar Echinococcosis (cysts in the liver that act like a malignant tumor) which can also happen in people and requires life-long drug therapy. While prevalence of AE is low, Alberta is the hot spot for EM in Canada with 60-70% of coyotes tested in the Edmonton area being positive. Since infection with this parasite can become so complicated, and because it is a human health concern, if your dog lives a high-risk lifestyle, regular deworming (as often as monthly) is recommended to prevent infection. Infection in cats is extremely rare. If you have any questions about EM or deworming please give the clinic a call!

Did you know microchipped dogs are more than twice as likely to be returned to their owners and microchipped cats are more than 20 times as likely to be returned? This only works if the information is up to date! National Check the Chip Day is a reminder to all pet owners to have their pets microchip scanned to make sure the microchip is still active and to check the registry to make sure your information is correct! Call or pop in to see how we can help!

As many of you have already seen, we have a new vet that started in July. Dr. Meara Munn-Patterson graduated from the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in 2023 and was practicing small animal medicine on Vancouver Island before moving back to Alberta. She enjoys spending time with her family and pets (her dog, Lucy, is a retired teaching beagle from vet school). In their spare time, Meara and her sisters will crochet and do other crafts together. Say hi to Dr. Meara next time you’re in!
