Genuinely, to reach the far end of Nova Scotia you take two ferries past the end of the road — and the reward is an island of lava, whales and one of history's greatest sailors.
Brier Island is the final link in the Digby Neck, a chain of basalt ridges left when the Atlantic Ocean was tearing itself open some 200 million years ago and lava flooded the rift. The Neck runs southwest from Digby like a causeway into the Bay of Fundy, through Long Island, until the land simply stops at Brier. Everything here is shaped by Fundy's huge tides: the currents boil around the ledges, the fog rolls in cold off the water, and the summer sea is rich enough to feed fleets of fishing boats — and the humpback whales that return every year to feed in full view of shore.
The island's lighthouse — the Western Light, first lit in 1809 and rebuilt since with bold red bands — has watched all of it, including a small boy named Joshua Slocum. Slocum was raised on Brier Island from the age of eight, among fishermen and boot-makers, and went to sea from these shores. In 1895 he sailed out of Boston in a battered oyster sloop called Spray and became the first person in history to sail alone around the world. The Nova Scotia island boy had out-navigated the planet.
Today Westport, the island's village, is a working fishing port of a few hundred people, famous among whale-watchers and birders alike — the island is a legendary funnel for migrating birds, and rarities blown off course make it a pilgrimage site every autumn. Basalt columns, zeolite crystals in the cliffs, two lighthouses and one road in a loop: Brier rewards everyone who makes the double ferry crossing.
