Nancy is feeling much better as you can see with her guilt trip 😝 she wants to go to the lake. Nancy is a very quiet Irish but as you can see she’s fed up 😝 She can’t swim yet .

For those who follow our page and love setters…

I’ve had some wonderful highlights over the past 10 years of owning setters. Ribbons, puppies , total joyous moments .

Recently, I received one of the most meaningful compliments of all and it came from a few veterinary professionals caring for Nancy.

As you know Nancy has had some setbacks following surgery but she has remained strong through her recovery. They commented that her consistent healthy weight , fabulous muscle tone and overall conditioning have really worked in her favour during recovery.

I feel very strongly about keeping my setters at a healthy weight and active. Setters can certainly be food driven ( counter surfers) and it’s so easy to give them that extra bit from your plate , however, in the end overfeeding isn’t kindness. Keeping them healthy is the long game I’m fighting for … let’s face it 12-15 years life expectancy is not long enough and who wants a suffering setter.

Maintaining a healthy weight and good muscle throughout their lives helps protect their joints and mobility and overall health. It can also make a real difference when their bodies are faced with illness , injury or surgery.

That compliment meant more to me than anything. The greatest reward is giving these dogs the best chance at a long active and healthy life.

If your setter has put on a few lbs cutting back can be hard ( I’ve certainly had to do it ) so I try exercising more and it really helps , raw veggies when the treats have to go. I also find keeping an eye and a CLOSE eye so 3 pounds don’t turn into 15/20 pounds!

My Gordon Rosie is the opposite ! She gets too thin so I work on that too! Overweight , underweight deserves same attention ! Also, when my girls go in season Danny Boy won’t eat “ hoping 😝 “ so I often have to increase food intake at times .

Look at this chart for help it’s so bang on and rather than scales … this is my go to.

Kelly is such a quiet, pretty Irish bitch ( female) She surprised me the last few times in Terra Nova especially today with her strong natural bird instincts ! She covers a lot of ground with speed and range with the big, sweeping zig-zag/side-to-side patter Irish setters do a little different. All of mine are not so obvious with the pattern only Nancy and Fergus it’s really noticeable and now Miss Kelly . Nancy no hikes but still loving the garden and spoiling this weekend .
