🐾 November is Senior Pet Month!

November is Senior Pet Month, a reminder that our loyal companions deserve a little extra care and attention as they enter their golden years. 💕

Pets age faster than we do, and their health needs change along the way. As they get older, regular checkups and preventive care become even more important to help catch early signs of arthritis, dental disease, kidney issues, or other age-related changes.

Some simple ways to support your senior pet include:
🩺 Scheduling regular wellness exams
🍖 Feeding a balanced, age-appropriate diet
🐕 Keeping them active with gentle exercise
🦷 Maintaining dental care
❤️ Monitoring for changes in behavior, appetite, or mobility

Growing older is a gift and with the right care, your senior pet can stay comfortable, happy, and thriving for years to come.

The Word of the Week is... FNA (Fine Needle Aspirate)!

You may hear your veterinarian mention performing an FNA — but what exactly does that mean?
FNA stands for Fine Needle Aspirate, a quick and minimally invasive way to collect a small sample of cells from a lump, bump, or swelling.

During the procedure, a veterinarian or technician uses a very small needle to collect cells from the area of concern. Those cells are then placed on a microscope slide and stained (just like in cytology!) so they can be examined under the microscope.

FNAs can help determine if a lump is made up of infection, inflammation, or abnormal cells that might need further testing. The best part? Many FNAs can be done during your pet’s regular visit — no anesthesia needed!

🎗️ Pet Cancer Awareness Month

November is Pet Cancer Awareness Month, a time to help pet owners understand the importance of early detection and regular veterinary checkups.

Cancer can affect pets of all ages and breeds, but with early diagnosis and advances in veterinary medicine, many pets go on to live happy, healthy lives after treatment. 💙

Some early warning signs to watch for include:
🐾 Lumps or bumps that change or grow
🐾 Unexplained weight loss or decreased appetite
🐾 Lethargy or reduced activity
🐾 Persistent coughing or breathing changes
🐾 Sores that don’t heal
🐾 Unexplained limp or sudden changes
🐾 Changes in bathroom habits

While these symptoms can be linked to other medical conditions, they’re always worth checking out. Early detection is key — it gives your pet the best chance for successful treatment and a healthy future. ❤️

Continuing Education & Team Growth

Members of our CBS Animal Hospital team attended the Newfoundland and Labrador Veterinary Medical Association Conference (NaLVMA) at the end of October!

Continuing education is a huge part of how we ensure we’re always providing the highest level of care and service to our patients and clients.
Our team spent the weekend learning from veterinary experts in anesthesia, nursing care, surgery, cardiovascular health, and more — bringing back new knowledge and techniques to apply in our hospital every day.

A special shout-out to our manager, Natalie, RVT, who was recognized at the gala dinner with the Jeff Vail Support Staff of the Year Award 🏆 — an incredible and well-deserved honor!

We’re proud to be part of a profession that never stops learning and growing 💙

The Word of the Week is...

✨CYTOLOGY✨

We use this word in appointments ALL the time, but what does it actually mean?

Cytology means, literally, the study of plant and animal cells. In veterinary general practice, the most common reason we want to perform cytology is to check for skin infection. The way you'll see this in your appointment is by the veterinarian or a support team member taking swabs, tape, or impressions of the affected areas of the skin to place onto a microscope slide.

This slide then gets dipped in three different types of stain that fix the cells in place and allow them to stand out against the rest of the skin cells on the sample. One of our technicians then looks at the slide under the microscope to see what types of infection cells are present, as well as inflammatory cells, or other irregular cells.

The next time you're here for an appointment and hear the word cytology, you'll know exactly what happens behind the scenes and under the microscope.

November is Pet Diabetes Month!

We see many cats and dogs that have diabetes. This surprises a lot of people!

The most common symptoms we see that bring pets in to see us are:

👉Increased thirst
👉Increased urination
👉Increased appetite
👉Unexplained weight loss

If you are noticing these symptoms developing, it's possible your pet has diabetes. We can do a blood test and a urinalysis to help determine the underlying cause of the symptoms, and if the culprit is diabetes, we get started on treatment as soon as we can.

Treatment for pets is largely the same as in humans - insulin injections! We can also place long-term blood glucose monitoring systems like Freestyle Libre onto your pet to help us fine-tune their insulin dosing.

Don't worry - if your pet is diagnosed, we will book you in for an appointment with a technician, and lots of reading material, to learn how to give subcutaneous injections, how to place the Libre, and how to best monitor your pet's glucose levels.

Diabetes in a life-long condition that can be very daunting when first diagnosed, but we are always here to answer questions and help you along the way.
