Working on "Send Outs" with my Cattledog Whip today between clients.

A "Send Out" is part of our obedience routine in the dogsport of IGP/Schutzhund we train for.

In this exercise we command the dog to run straight out from the heel position and the dog must continue running until the judge signals us to "Down" the dog in motion (while the dog is moving). The dog must lay down as commanded and wait for the handler to recall the dog to them. This is an exercise that Whip excels in and thoroughly enjoys practicing.

Muzzle Training with Lynda Holinaty-Tripp & her young Bouvier des Flandres Misha.

📣📣 Team Of The Week📣📣

Two of the most underused training tools in my opinion are the crate and the muzzle. Training the muzzle is a command and a behavior I believe all dogs should learn.

Too many people forgo this training because they believe that it's only for bad dogs or it's a punishment. The urban myth that because a dog that wears a muzzle it must be a bad dog is just that...a myth!

For many dogs especially dogs that are insecure, it can help bolster confidence. And in many cases, people who run into medical emergencies with their dogs don't realize the added stress having a muzzle or being put in a kennel can cause the dog when they're in an elevated state of stress already. If we have proactively trained the muzzle or the crate to be a comfortable behavior for the dog, then in times of emergency it's less of a stress stacker for the dog.

This is our first lesson with training Misha the muzzle. Misha tends to be a very nervous dog who gets over excitable when her stress threshold is pushed. So we build this exercise clearly and slowly ensuring the dog is winning and building confidence. The goal here is for the dog to push into the muzzle like it's her decision to put the muzzle on. We do not want the handler reaching out or forcing this exercise. It's with clear communication, marking and rewarding that the dog wins and we build endurance duration and distraction.

Kayla McAloney and her boy Miller the Cane Cane learn the Sit & Down Positions using a "box". This is the only their second private session with us. Shaping a new behavior may not look pretty at first but wait till you see this dog rock these positions in the upcoming weeks! This Team is already impressing me! Can't wait to see where their training goes!

We're proud to have clients from all across the province and some from outside the province. And most are by referral from other trainers.

Knowing that we provide a valuable service not only to our own clients but to other trainers clients as well speaks volumes about the level of expertise we provide. We are definitely not your average dog trainer!

A good dog trainer will always put the betterment of the dog and the client first. And in some cases that means knowing when another trainer will be a better fit for you and your dog. A good trainer will know their limitations and refer you to a trainer who they believe will be more successful in helping you attain your training or behavior management goals.

Not all trainers want to work with dogs that have a bite history, resource guard, have dog or human reactivity, etc Does this make them a lesser trainer?? ABSOLUTELY NOT!

Not all dogs fit into a cookie cutter group dog training class. Some dogs are over excitable. Some are reactive and some need behavior modification that can't be done in a group setting. This is where K9 Mechanix Dog Training takes pride in the special services we offer. Our private one-on-one sessions can be custom fit around you and your dogs training needs.

We ourselves here at K9 Mechanix Dog Training will refer out if we think it's something out of our wheelhouse. Any good dog trainer knows there's no shame in that.

What Happens To Retired Working Dogs?

Here at K9 Mechanix Dog Training they get the best life possible.

My personal 8yr old retired working Cane Corso Ryker still lives the life of a Rockstar.

Sure, he's a little older, a little grayer and a little slower but my boy still loves to work when he can. His obedience and protection may not be quite what it used to be, but he still loves to have a job. Whether it's doing the occasional obedience, bite work or just being our property sentry guard dog he still has a job. He loves to watch over the neighborhood on our second story deck. He still believes he's "King" of the neighborhood and we let him believe that! 😉

Ryker's amazing temperament has changed so many people's negative views on the scary image of what society would have you believe a Cane Corso is like to winning over neighbors, vets, clients and people in public in general. He has been a great representation of the breed.

This sweet biddable dog has provided me with so many wonderful memories from working in the dog sport of IGP/Schutzhund, working on tv shows, being my demo dog for clients to being the best family pet we could ask for. So for us, even though he isn't actively working or training on a daily basis, this boy is living his absolute best life. We are blessed for this sweet soul every day!
