“Even the smallest feline is a masterpiece” Dr. Kate is our resident feline veterinarian and is so passionate about helping her kitty patients and their families. Striving to bring quality veterinary care to all cats, she achieved the designation of Gold Standard Cat Friendly Practice for Family Pet Hospital in 2013. Kate loves where she works and the people she works with. Dr. Kate feels lucky to

have strong roots in Southern Alberta where she was born and raised on a beef farm. Even from a young child, she was determined to become a veterinarian. Kate received her Bachelor of Science in Biology at the University of Lethbridge and then her life long dreams were realized when she attended the Western College of Veterinary Medicine in Saskatoon. She left her mark there by starting the Feline Medicine Club and then graduated in 2012 with distinction and the honor of the American Association of Feline Practitioners student award. Kate practices medicine with a gentle, quiet care and enjoys developing life long relationships with her patients and their families. In 2019, she was deeply grateful to be recognized as the Canadian Small Animal Practitioner of the year. She loves educating about feline topics and has written for several local publications as well as providing seminars for the public. When she is not enjoying her kitty patients, she is home with her teenage daughter, 7 cats, and jungle of houseplants.

Jennifer Baczuk, a dedicated volunteer with NOKA (the No-Kill Animal Association), supports their mission by handcrafting and selling beautiful headbands, donating the proceeds to help animals in need. She has generously donated a full basket of her handmade headbands to Zen Cat Clinic to support our Cat Kindness Compassion Fund.
100% of the proceeds from these headbands will go directly to the Compassion Fund.

We were very happy to see a full bin at the end of October for our Tricks & Treats fundraiser. Thank you so much to everyone who brought food to the clinic. These donations have been divided up and donated to the Cats Sass Rescue, PAACTS Care Closet initiative, and the Lethbridge Community Animal Services pet food bank. These groups help take care of cats that would otherwise be without a home or without a full belly.

Did you know we also do cat grooming? This is a difficult service to find in Lethbridge, especially finding one that considers the mental health of the cat. We take a fear-free approach to everything, and know how to handle cats that may be scared, painful, or traumatized from previous aggressive grooms. If slow and compassionate handling and/or gabapentin isn’t enough, we highly recommend sedation as a way for your cat to be “asleep” for most of the event.

During sedated grooms we treat them like any patient given light anesthetic. This means that they: are on flow-by oxygen, vitals are constantly monitored by a RVT (including temperature, blood oxygen levels, and heart and respiratory rate), receive an anti-nausea injection before wake up, and are kept warm and safe during recovery. We handle them gently and never put them in positions that would put stress on their joints.

We only recommend grooms when a cat is unable to clean itself or if their coat has become tangled beyond brushing. Cats are very clean creatures, and keeping their fur and skin healthy helps their overall health.

Thank you SO much to our community of clients, followers, and kitties for nominating us as the top pet clinic two years in a row. We have only been open for a year and a half and have already garnered so much support from you all. We love being able to provide amazing care to the kitties of Lethbridge and beyond.

Thank you to those who attended our “A Very Sphynx Halloween” yesterday! We gave lots of snuggles to Jinx, King, Wolfie, and Venus who are all currently up for adoption. A big thank you to the Alberta Spyhnx Rescue for bringing these sweethearts to the clinic from their location in Calgary. Congratulations to the winner of the Sphynx care package draw! They won an “ultimate hairless cat skincare kit” from Mr Wrinkles, a cute Halloween cat bag made by Crafty Owl Crochet and More, a Sphynx mug from AB Sphynx, and a few little snacks and toys.

Bean, Ramona, (Mabel who we didn’t grab a photo of), and Felix all tolerated an adorable Halloween costume for a few minutes.

We’d like everyone to meet our new clinic cat, Mabel.

Mabel was found by one of our clients in a ditch along the highway. They were unable to keep her and weren’t able to foster her very long as their currents fur babies would be quite stressed out by her. When they brought Mabel here to scan for a microchip (which she did not have) we all fell in love with her. She was the perfect third addition to our tricolour trio. She is a beautiful 4 month calico and the sweetest little thing. We hope to raise her in the paw steps of calm, loving Bean and a little less in the mischief causing ways of Ramona.

*Disclaimer. Our adoption of Mabel was a very special situation. We do not foster or adopt out cats regularly. If you need assistance finding resources for a stray or lost cat we’d be happy to help, but we are not a rescue.

Good morning everyone! I had a very sad thing happen this morning where someone messaged us on Facebook, we replied via email and then did not get back to her for 24 hours. The individual was not a client but was inquiring about quality of life and our end of life services. I guess she was unable to call us. I am so devastated for her that her kitty passed away at home. But we are being accused of being cold and threatened with a bad review - I understand she is going through grief and with that comes anger and blame. But we want to circumvent that from happening to anyone again. I want to just let everyone know that IF you have an urgency and you are not able to call us you can also email my personal email at [email protected]. I do get upwards of 10 client emails a day so it is a lot on top of all my other duties but if it's urgent please put that in the subject line ("URGENT") and I will get back. Remember that a true emergency is probably not appropriate for email - we are lucky to have emergency vet services in the city if needed. Send some peace into the universe for this grieving kitty mom and some peace to us as well as we are feeling a bit defeated this morning. You all know we try very hard to help everyone and having someone fall through the cracks is the last thing we want.

Edit: We are a sad Zen Cat today. Our first ever negative review 😭 but bound to happen eventually. I hope it at least helped her feel better.
