Guess Who's Back? is officially BACK! 🎉

We're excited to say every other Friday we are bringing back the best and brightest as they share their incredible hands-on clinical experiences that are shaping their skills and defining their awesome career paths.

This week, we're spotlighting an incredibly passionate student who spent their summer diving deep into the world of emergency medicine at VCA Canada Guardian Veterinary Centre in .

🌟 Spotlight On: Jaden S. | DVM Student, University of Calgary 🌟

"Following my second year of vet school, I was particularly drawn to emergency medicine and sought an intensive, hands-on clinical experience in this field.

Working at Guardian Vet Centre this summer provided a genuine appreciation for the level of compassion and dedication required from all staff in a high-volume emergency environment. The welcoming and supportive team consistently encouraged my inquiries, making it an exceptional learning environment.

I was privileged to participate in life-saving procedures and practice a wide array of clinical skills essential for my future career. My time spent shadowing both emergency veterinarians and specialists in surgery and internal medicine underscored the importance of collaborative medicine. I gained a deeper respect for the time and commitment necessary to excel in specialized veterinary fields.

This incredibly rewarding experience confirmed my interest in pursuing emergency medicine. I highly recommend this clinic to any student seeking focused, high-impact exposure to emergency veterinary care."

Jaden's experience is a powerful reminder of how rewarding specialized mentorship can be. We can't wait to see you thrive!

🐾 : Meet Maliki 🐾

Maliki came to our VCA Canada Forest Lawn Animal Hospital team after living with a small mass for nearly a year. In the month before his visit, the mass grew rapidly, ulcerated, and reached nearly 20 cm in diameter. By the time he arrived, it required immediate surgical intervention.

The procedure was complex. Myxosarcomas present unique challenges (they lack distinct margins), making complete removal difficult. Our team worked carefully to excise the mass and close the incision without tension, ensuring Maliki’s comfort and recovery.

Since his successful surgery, Maliki has returned for staple removal and is doing well. While the team over at Forest Lawn will continue to monitor the site for recurrence, the encouraging news is that this type of tumor rarely spreads to other locations.

Stories like Maliki’s are possible because of the generosity behind our program. This community giveback fund helps pet parents when they need it most, ensuring that pets like Maliki receive the care they deserve.💙

and are amazing at adapting! They use their sharp hearing, powerful sense of smell, and memory of their home to compensate when their eyesight starts to fade. That’s why changes in vision often go unnoticed at first.

Here are some simple ways to make life safer and easier for your furry friend.

Ever wonder how your dog says “I love you” without words? It’s in the way they lean against you, follow you from room to room, or bring their favorite toy to you. Sometimes it’s just that look, the one that says you’re their whole world.

These little moments are their love letters. 💌🐶

🐾 Meet | Vanessa, Ralph, and...Ralph 🐾

Growing up, Vanessa always had a loyal companion by her side, her dog Ralph. In fact, she had two Ralphs! “Yup, my first two dogs, they were both named Ralph.” Wherever she went, Ralph was there too. He showed her what true companionship looks like, and how powerful the bond between people and their pets can be.

Vanessa remembers her second pup Ralph, a German shorthaired pointer, sitting quietly beside her while she played with her little doctor’s kit. "I’d listen to his heart with a toy stethoscope, check his ears, and look into his eyes. He’d just sit there patiently and let me do whatever I wanted.”

That bond inspired Vanessa’s path in science, medicine, and animal care. But for her, it’s never just about medical outcomes, it’s about emotional ones too. "Stats say that of the number of people within a city that have pets, only 50% of them have access to vet care. So there's 50% of owners out there who can't get to a vet regularly. And often, the people who benefit most from the love of a pet are the ones facing the biggest barriers. That’s why we have .”

Through initiatives like our Pet Pantry and rabies/vaccine clinics, VCA Canada provides hundreds of thousands of dollars in food, care, and services each year. From supporting local humane societies and rescues, to funding surgeries and offering medical advice for displaced pets, we’re committed to making sure families and pets in need are never left behind.

Vanessa says she often thinks back to her younger self, sitting on the floor with Ralph, listening to his heartbeat with a toy stethoscope. "Ralph never once got a bill, and that’s the kind of care and compassion I’m proud to help bring to communities today.” 💙

It’s ! 🐶🐱

Part of our program, the and are all about making sure families don’t have to face pet parent hardships alone. We bring quality food and veterinary medicine for dogs and cats directly into neighbourhoods, and we do it with empathy. No judgment. No questions asked, just support. Because we know that behind every pet is someone doing their best, and sometimes a little help makes all the difference.

These events are entirely run by VCA Canada staff and qualified volunteers with the support of generous donations from compassionate partners and aligned organizations in the area.

No matter the circumstance, all pets deserve quality food, medicine, and a supportive ear for their families. The human-animal bond, and the connection to the community, are at the core of all we do.

Check out our team at a recent Pantry event in and follow us on Facebook to stay up to date with these initiatives and the next public event .💙

Why does your senior dog seem to sleep so… loudly?

You might notice twitching, paddling, vocalizing, or even pacing at night. It’s easy to chalk it up to “just getting older,” but there’s more going on beneath the surface.

As dogs age, changes in a part of the brain called 🧠🐶 the PONS 🧠🐶 (a small but important region in the brainstem) can affect how they move, sleep, and respond to the world around them. The pons helps regulate REM sleep and motor control, which means your dog’s sleep might look more active, restless, or even noisy as they get older.

Signs to watch for:
➡️ An increase in twitching or paddling during sleep
➡️ Changes in blinking or balance

How can you support your senior pet when you see the signs?
➡️ Stick to a consistent bedtime routine
➡️ Create a quiet, cozy sleep space
➡️ Offer gentle movement and brain-healthy nutrition

If sleep changes come with mobility or behaviour shifts, call your veterinarian and take a short video of their sleep behavior. This can be incredibly helpful for your veterinary team to assess the signs more accurately.

🎃 Tonight’s the night! 🎃

Before the doorbell rings, here’s your quick cheat sheet:

🐾 Chocolate, xylitol, glow sticks = Trick
🍎 Apple slices, pumpkin puree and a quiet corner = Treat
🧁 Cupcakes, mini marshmallows = Cute, but dangerous

Keep the candy out of reach, the costumes comfy, and the pets calm. Halloween’s better when everyone feels safe.
