Meet Cosmo, the youngest of the four Ring-Tailed Lemurs. He lives on our island habitat beside the pavilion with Nova, Luna, and Sun.

Ring-Tailed Lemurs are found only in Madagascar’s primary forests, where they leap through the trees using their long, striped tails for balance and camouflage. Sadly, they’re threatened by habitat loss, hunting, slash-and-burn agriculture, and the illegal pet trade.

Cosmo is easy to recognize because his tail is so short. We don’t know exactly what happened, as he came to us as a rescue, but it doesn’t slow him down one bit. He still leaps and navigates the trees with incredible agility.

By visiting the zoo, you’re helping support the care of Cosmo and his troop, and contributing to conservation programs that protect wildlife and habitats around the world.

Have you met Rosie?

Rosie was rescued near Invermere, BC after being struck by a vehicle and suffering head and eye injuries. With her mother missing and unable to survive alone in the wild, she was treated at Invermere Veterinary Hospital before arriving at the Greater Vancouver Zoo for lifelong care.

While cougar populations are currently stable, they still face challenges from habitat loss and human activity. You can help protect wildlife like Rosie by:

🐾 Keeping pets and their food indoors
🐾 Staying together and making noise on hikes
🐾 Supporting accredited zoos and conservation programs

Come say hi to learn more about how you can make a difference and coexist with wildlife.

We’re excited to share that our four Red River Hogs—Bomu and his three sisters Volta, Dja, and Giri—have just moved into their very own spacious enclosure. You can now find them happily rooting and exploring on the south end of the zoo between the red foxes and the onager.

Native to east-central Africa, Red River Hogs thrive in dense rainforests and moist woodlands, using their powerful snouts and tusks to forage for just about anything including roots, fruits, small animals, and even bird eggs. They're definitely not picky eaters, but please do not feed them.

While not currently endangered, habitat loss and hunting pressure can quickly shift their status. Their habitats are disappearing due to deforestation and human activity. By protecting their natural environments and supporting sustainable practices, we can help ensure species like the Red River Hog continue to thrive for generations to come.

With their fiery red coats, white facial markings, and tufted ears, Red River Hogs are the most brightly coloured wild pigs out there. Make sure to take a peek at their new home the next time you swing by.

So many hatchlings 🐢💚

Last week, we witnessed a new record for hatchlings in a single day. An amazing 71 Western Painted Turtles hatched, marking a major milestone in our conservation efforts.

This is just a fraction of the 700 eggs currently incubating as part of our long-term project to help restore B.C.’s only native freshwater turtle species. With populations declining due to habitat loss, road mortality, and invasive predators, every hatchling counts.

The Greater Vancouver Zoo is proud to be part of a collaborative recovery program working with partners across the province to give these turtles a head start. Once they’re big and strong enough, many of them will be released back into carefully monitored wetland habitats where they can thrive and help boost wild populations.

Western Painted Turtles play a key role in wetland ecosystems, but their numbers have dwindled in many areas. By protecting and nurturing these hatchlings, we’re helping preserve biodiversity and maintain healthy freshwater environments in B.C.

Meet our new arrivals 💚

We’re excited to welcome five female blue wildebeest to the Greater Vancouver Zoo. These grassland grazers are known for their striking appearance and thundering migrations.

Though blue wildebeest populations remain stable in the wild, habitat loss and human-wildlife conflict continue to threaten them and many other migratory species. By caring for animals like these, we aim to inspire conservation action and protect the ecosystems they depend on.

Come meet the herd and learn how you can help safeguard wildlife around the world. They are currently settling into their new habitat behind the addax enclosure on the south side of the zoo.
