Ce pauvre cheval a été attaqué par un chien

Ce cheval a été emmené d’urgence à Equitom suite à l’attaque violente d’un chien.🚨
Nos vétérinaires ont directement réalisé plusieurs examens de contrôle, en explorant les plaies et à l’aide de radiographies, afin d’évaluer la gravité des blessures.

Ce cheval a été mordu à plusieurs endroits, en particulier aux postérieurs. Les radiographies n’ont heureusement rien révélé de grave, mais les blessures étant assez profondes, une intervention chirurgicale s’est avérée nécessaire.

🪡 Après un nettoyage en profondeur afin de tout désinfecter correctement, notre chirurgienne a refermé les plaies à l’aide de sutures.

Les accidents arrivent, et ne sont pas à prendre à la légère.🚨

This poor horse was attacked by a dog

This horse was rushed to Equitom after being violently attacked by a dog. 🚨
Our veterinarians immediately carried out several examinations, including wound exploration and X-rays, to assess the extent of the injuries.

The horse had been bitten in several places, particularly on the hind legs. Fortunately, the X-rays showed no fractures or other serious internal injuries. However, because the wounds were quite deep, surgery was necessary.

🪡 After thoroughly cleaning and disinfecting the wounds, our surgeon carefully closed them with sutures.

Accidents happen, but they should never be taken lightly. 🚨
Even when injuries don't look severe from the outside, the damage underneath can be much more serious. If you have any doubts, always have your horse examined by a veterinarian.

Dit arme paard werd aangevallen door een hond

Dit paard werd met spoed naar Equitom gebracht nadat het was aangevallen door een hond. 🚨
Onze dierenartsen voerden meteen verschillende onderzoeken uit, waaronder een grondig onderzoek van de wonden en röntgenfoto’s, om de ernst van de verwondingen in kaart te brengen.

Het paard was op verschillende plaatsen gebeten, vooral aan de achterbenen. Gelukkig toonden de röntgenfoto’s geen breuken of andere ernstige inwendige letsels. Omdat de wonden echter vrij diep waren, was een chirurgische ingreep noodzakelijk.

🪡 Na een grondige reiniging en ontsmetting heeft onze chirurg de wonden zorgvuldig gehecht.
Ongevallen gebeuren, maar mogen nooit onderschat worden. 🚨

Ook wanneer de verwondingen er aan de buitenkant niet ernstig uitzien, kan er onderliggend heel wat schade zijn. Twijfel je? Laat je paard dan altijd onderzoeken door een dierenarts.

Chaque matin commence par une évaluation approfondie de tous les patients hospitalisés. Lors de ces tournées, nos spécialistes et internes passent en r***e chaque cas individuellement et discutent de l’évolution observée au cours des dernières 24 heures.

Every morning starts with a thorough evaluation of all hospitalized patients. During these rounds, our specialists and interns review each case individually and discuss the progress made over the past 24 hours.

No two patients are the same. One stable foal may simply require routine monitoring, while another may need intensive care, intravenous fluids, or urgent adjustments to its treatment plan. Throughout the morning, different cases are assessed one after another, each with its own challenges and priorities.

In this video, you can see just a few examples. From treating contracted tendons in newborn foals, managing diarrhea and dehydration, providing supportive care, placing or removing catheters, to protecting vulnerable patients from infectious diseases.

For our team, morning rounds are much more than a routine check-up. They are an essential moment to carefully assess every patient, coordinate treatment plans, and ensure that each horse and foal receives the individual attention and professional care it needs.

Elke ochtend begint met een grondige evaluatie van alle gehospitaliseerde patiënten. Tijdens deze rondes bekijken onze specialisten en interns elke casus individueel en bespreken ze de vooruitgang die in de afgelopen 24 uur is geboekt.

Geen twee patiënten zijn hetzelfde. Een stabiel veulen heeft misschien enkel routinematige opvolging nodig, terwijl een ander intensieve zorgen, intraveneuze vloeistoffen of dringende aanpassingen aan het behandelplan vereist. Gedurende de ochtend worden verschillende patiënten na elkaar geëvalueerd, elk met hun eigen uitdagingen en prioriteiten.

In deze video zie je slechts enkele voorbeelden. Van het behandelen van peescontracturen bij pasgeboren veulens, het aanpakken van diarree en uitdroging, het bieden van ondersteunende zorg, het plaatsen of verwijderen van katheters, tot het beschermen van kwetsbare patiënten tegen infectieziekten.

Voor ons team zijn de ochtendrondes veel meer dan een routinecontrole. Het is een essentieel moment om elke patiënt zorgvuldig te beoordelen, behandelplannen op elkaar af te stemmen en ervoor te zorgen dat elk paard en veulen de individuele aandacht en professionele zorg krijgt die het nodig heeft.

🔬 Biopsie pulmonaire chez un cheval présentant une maladie respiratoire persistante

Ce cheval souffrait de problèmes respiratoires récurrents et ne répondait pas comme attendu aux traitements réalisés jusqu’à présent. Afin de mieux comprendre la cause sous-jacente et d’orienter la prise en charge, nous avons réalisé une biopsie pulmonaire.

✔️ Une biopsie pulmonaire est une procédure consistant à prélever un petit échantillon de tissu pulmonaire pour analyse en laboratoire. Elle est souvent indiquée dans les cas de maladies respiratoires diffuses, progressives ou inexpliquées, lorsqu’un diagnostic définitif ne peut être obtenu par des examens moins invasifs.

Dans cette vidéo, vous pouvez observer l’échantillon de tissu pulmonaire flottant dans le liquide. Il s’agit d’un signe rassurant, car cela indique que le tissu contient encore de l’air au niveau des alvéoles pulmonaires.

👉La biopsie va maintenant faire l’objet d’analyses approfondies afin de déterminer précisément ce qui se passe au sein des poumons. Les résultats nous fourniront des informations précieuses sur l’activité éventuelle du processus pathologique, la nature des lésions pulmonaires présentes et, surtout, sur le caractère potentiellement réversible ou non de ces changements.

Chaque étape diagnostique nous rapproche d’une meilleure compréhension du problème et du traitement le plus adapté pour notre patient.

🔬 Lung biopsy in a horse with persistent respiratory disease

This horse has been experiencing recurring respiratory problems and has not responded as expected to the treatments performed so far. To better understand the underlying cause and guide further management, we performed a lung biopsy.

✔️ A lung biopsy is a procedure in which a small sample of lung tissue is collected for laboratory analysis. It is often indicated in cases of unexplained, diffuse, or progressive respiratory disease when a definitive diagnosis cannot be reached through less invasive testing.

In this video, you can see the lung tissue sample floating in fluid. This is a reassuring finding, as it indicates that the tissue still contains air within the alveoli.

🐴 The biopsy will now undergo detailed laboratory examination to help us determine exactly what is happening within the lungs. The results will provide valuable information about whether the disease process is still active, the nature of the lung changes present, and, importantly, whether these changes may still be reversible.

Every diagnostic step brings us closer to understanding the cause of the problem and developing the most appropriate treatment plan for our patient.

🔬 Longbiopsie bij een paard met een aanhoudende luchtwegaandoening

Dit paard had last van terugkerende ademhalingsproblemen en reageerde niet zoals verwacht op de behandelingen die tot nu toe waren uitgevoerd. Om de onderliggende oorzaak beter te begrijpen en de verdere behandeling te kunnen bepalen, hebben we een longbiopsie uitgevoerd.

✔️ Een longbiopsie is een procedure waarbij een klein stukje longweefsel wordt afgenomen voor analyse in het laboratorium. Deze techniek wordt vaak toegepast bij diffuse, progressieve of onverklaarde luchtwegaandoeningen wanneer een definitieve diagnose niet kan worden gesteld met minder invasieve onderzoeken.

In deze video kunt u het stukje longweefsel zien drijven in de vloeistof. Dit is een geruststellend teken, omdat het aangeeft dat het weefsel nog lucht bevat in de longblaasjes (alveolen).

👉 De biopsie zal nu uitgebreid worden onderzocht om nauwkeurig vast te stellen wat er zich in de longen afspeelt. De resultaten zullen ons waardevolle informatie verschaffen over de mogelijke activiteit van het ziekteproces, de aard van de aanwezige longletsels en vooral over de vraag of deze veranderingen al dan niet omkeerbaar zijn.

Elke diagnostische stap brengt ons dichter bij een beter begrip van het probleem en bij de meest geschikte behandeling voor onze patiënt.

Sarcoïde à travers plusieurs traitements

Les sarcoïdes périoculaires représentent un défi particulier. L'excision chirurgicale n'est souvent pas envisageable en raison des contraintes anatomiques de la région périoculaire, mais laisser ces lésions sans traitement comporte également ses propres risques. Dans ce cas, nous avons opté pour l'électrochimothérapie TSE, une technique qui associe l'injection locale d'un agent chimiothérapeutique à la délivrance d'impulsions électriques précises directement dans le tissu tumoral.

Le mécanisme est simple mais très efficace. Les impulsions électriques augmentent temporairement la perméabilité des membranes des cellules tumorales, permettant à l'agent chimiothérapeutique d'être absorbé à une concentration nettement supérieure à ce qui serait autrement possible. Il en résulte une destruction ciblée des cellules tumorales, tout en minimisant les dommages aux tissus sains environnants. Un avantage supplémentaire réside dans l'activation de la réponse immunitaire propre du cheval contre la lésion.

En raison de la localisation périoculaire sensible, nous avons délibérément choisi de réaliser cette procédure sous anesthésie générale. Les impulsions électriques dans cette région peuvent être perçues de manière plus intense, et même sous anesthésie complète, la stimulation nerveuse peut encore provoquer une réponse musculaire réflexe. L'anesthésie générale offre ainsi le niveau le plus élevé de confort et de sécurité pour le cheval comme pour le chirurgien.

Grâce à un diagnostic précoce et une intervention rapide, le pronostic dans ce cas est très positif.

L'électrochimothérapie TSE est particulièrement précieuse pour les sarcoïdes difficiles d'accès ou à implantation profonde, en tant que traitement complémentaire après excision chirurgicale pour réduire les récidives, et dans les cas où la chirurgie n'est pas possible. Dans les cas et les localisations appropriés, la procédure peut également être réalisée sur le cheval debout.

Sarcoid across multiple treatments

Sarcoids near the eye present a unique challenge. Surgical excision is often not a viable option due to the anatomical constraints of the periocular region, and yet leaving these lesions untreated carries its own risks. In this case, we opted for TSE electrochemotherapy, a technique that combines local injection of a chemotherapeutic agent with the delivery of precise electrical pulses directly to the tumor tissue.

The mechanism is straightforward but highly effective. The electrical pulses temporarily increase the permeability of tumor cell membranes, allowing the chemotherapeutic agent to be absorbed at a significantly higher concentration than would otherwise be possible. This results in targeted destruction of tumor cells while minimizing damage to the surrounding healthy tissue. An additional benefit is the activation of the horse's own immune response against the lesion.

Because of the sensitive periocular location, we deliberately chose to perform this procedure under general anaesthesia. Electrical pulses in this region can be perceived more intensely, and even under full anaesthesia, nerve stimulation can still provoke a reflex muscular response. General anaesthesia therefore offers the highest level of comfort and safety for both horse and surgeon.

Thanks to early diagnosis and prompt intervention, the prognosis in this case is very positive.

TSE electrochemotherapy is particularly valuable for hard-to-reach or deep-rooted sarcoids, as a complementary treatment following surgical excision to reduce recurrence, and in cases where surgery is not possible. In appropriate cases and locations, the procedure can also be performed on the standing horse.

Sarcoids nabij het oog vormen een bijzondere uitdaging. Chirurgische excisie is vaak geen haalbare optie vanwege de anatomische beperkingen van de perioculaire regio, maar onbehandelde letsels laten brengt zijn eigen risico's met zich mee. In dit geval kozen we voor TSE-elektrochemotherapie, een techniek die lokale injectie van een chemotherapeutisch middel combineert met de toediening van nauwkeurige elektrische pulsen rechtstreeks in het tumorweefsel.

Het werkingsmechanisme is eenvoudig maar bijzonder effectief. De elektrische pulsen verhogen tijdelijk de doorlaatbaarheid van de tumorcelmembranen, waardoor het chemotherapeutisch middel in een aanzienlijk hogere concentratie wordt opgenomen dan anders mogelijk zou zijn. Dit resulteert in gerichte destructie van tumorcellen, met minimale schade aan het omliggende gezonde weefsel. Een bijkomend voordeel is de activering van de eigen immuunrespons van het paard tegen het letsel.

Vanwege de gevoelige perioculaire locatie kozen we er bewust voor om deze ingreep onder algemene anesthesie uit te voeren. Elektrische pulsen in dit gebied kunnen intenser worden waargenomen, en zelfs onder volledige anesthesie kan zenuwstimulatie nog een reflexmatige spierreactie uitlokken. Algemene anesthesie biedt dan ook het hoogste niveau van comfort en veiligheid voor zowel paard als chirurg.

Dankzij vroege diagnose en snelle interventie is de prognose in dit geval zeer positief.

TSE-elektrochemotherapie is bijzonder waardevol bij moeilijk bereikbare of diepgewortelde sarcoids, als aanvullende behandeling na chirurgische excisie om herval te verminderen, en in gevallen waarbij chirurgie niet mogelijk is. In geschikte gevallen en op geschikte locaties kan de ingreep ook worden uitgevoerd bij het staande paard.

Votre cheval souffre-t-il de démangeaisons, d’urticaire ou de problèmes cutanés récurrents ?

Les allergies chez les chevaux sont plus fréquentes qu’on ne le pense et peuvent avoir un impact important sur leur confort et leur qualité de vie. Des frottements constants, une perte de poils, un épaississement de la peau ou des poussées saisonnières qui réapparaissent malgré les traitements sont autant de signes pouvant indiquer une allergie sous-jacente.

Pour identifier précisément l’origine du problème, nous réalisons un test intradermique (IDT), considéré comme la référence en matière de diagnostic des allergies chez le cheval. Lors de cet examen, de petites quantités de jusqu’à 60 allergènes différents sont injectées juste sous la peau. Parmi eux figurent les pollens de graminées et d’arbres, les acariens de poussière et de stockage, les moisissures ainsi que certains insectes tels que les Culicoides (responsables de la dermite estivale récidivante).

En évaluant les réactions cutanées à différents intervalles de temps, nous pouvons déterminer avec précision quelles substances déclenchent la réaction allergique.

Un diagnostic précis nous permet ensuite de proposer un traitement ciblé : adaptation de l’environnement du cheval, mise en place d’une immunothérapie spécifique aux allergènes (vaccin de désensibilisation personnalisé), ou combinaison des deux. Dans la majorité des cas, une amélioration significative et durable est possible.

Allergies in horses are more common than many people realise and they can have a serious impact on your horse's comfort and quality of life. Constant rubbing, hair loss, skin thickening, or seasonal flare-ups that keep coming back despite treatment are all signs that an underlying allergy may be at play.

To get to the root of the problem, we use an intradermal skin test (IDT) the gold standard in equine allergy diagnostics. During this procedure, we inject small amounts of up to 60 different allergens just beneath the skin, including grass and tree pollens, dust and storage mites, moulds, and insects such as Culicoides (the culprit behind sweet itch). By assessing the skin's response at different time intervals, we can identify exactly which substances are triggering the reaction.

A precise diagnosis means we can offer targeted advice: whether that's adjusting your horse's environment, starting allergen-specific immunotherapy (a customised desensitisation vaccine), or combining both. In most cases, real and lasting improvement is possible.
