Kystes osseux chez le cheval, après une opération, chaque détail compte dans la guérison.

Ce cheval nous avait été référé pour un kyste osseux mais la réussite d’une chirurgie ne repose pas uniquement sur l’intervention elle-même. Les jours et les semaines qui suivent sont tout aussi importants : ils permettent à l’équipe vétérinaire de surveiller les structures opérées, d’évaluer la cicatrisation et de s’assurer que le cheval récupère dans les meilleures conditions possibles.

Pourquoi réaliser des radiographies dès le lendemain de l’opération ?
Ces premières images permettent de contrôler le résultat de la chirurgie et de vérifier l’état des structures opérées. Elles servent également de référence pour les examens suivants. En comparant les clichés au fil du temps.

Pourquoi le changement de pansement est-il tout aussi important ?
Au-delà de la protection de la plaie, le renouvellement du pansement permet d’examiner la zone opérée, de la nettoyer soigneusement et de suivre son évolution. C’est aussi l’occasion de repérer d’éventuels signes inhabituels et d’adapter les soins si nécessaire.

Chaque intervention est différente, tout comme chaque récupération. Le suivi est donc adapté à la chirurgie réalisée et à l’évolution propre à chaque cheval.

La qualité d’une prise en charge chirurgicale repose aussi sur la précision et la régularité des soins postopératoires.

Bone cysts : after surgery, every detail matters in recovery.

This horse was referred to us for a bone cyst, but the success of surgery depends on more than the procedure itself. The days and weeks that follow are just as important: they allow the veterinary team to monitor the operated structures, assess healing and ensure that the horse recovers under the best possible conditions.

Why take X-rays as early as the day after surgery?
These initial images allow us to check the surgical outcome and assess the condition of the operated structures. They also serve as a reference for subsequent examinations. By comparing the images over time.

Why is changing the dressing just as important?
Beyond protecting the wound, changing the dressing allows the operated area to be examined, carefully cleaned and monitored. It is also an opportunity to identify any unusual signs and adjust the care if necessary.

Every procedure is different, just as every recovery is different. Follow-up care is therefore tailored to the surgery performed and each horse’s individual progress.

The quality of surgical care also depends on the precision and consistency of postoperative care.

Botcysten bij paarden: na een operatie telt elk detail mee in het herstel.

Dit paard werd naar ons doorverwezen voor een botcyste, maar het succes van een chirurgische ingreep hangt niet alleen af van de operatie zelf. De dagen en weken daarna zijn even belangrijk: ze stellen het veterinaire team in staat om de geopereerde structuren op te volgen, de wondgenezing te beoordelen en ervoor te zorgen dat het paard onder de best mogelijke omstandigheden herstelt.

Waarom worden er al de dag na de operatie röntgenfoto’s gemaakt?
Deze eerste beelden maken het mogelijk om het resultaat van de operatie te controleren en de toestand van de geopereerde structuren te beoordelen. Ze dienen ook als referentie voor latere onderzoeken. Door de beelden in de loop van de tijd met elkaar te vergelijken.

Waarom is het vervangen van het verband minstens even belangrijk?
Naast de bescherming van de wonde maakt het vervangen van het verband het mogelijk om het geopereerde gebied te onderzoeken, zorgvuldig te reinigen en de evolutie ervan op te volgen. Het is ook een gelegenheid om eventuele afwijkende tekenen op te merken en de verzorging indien nodig aan te passen.

Elke ingreep is anders, net als elk herstelproces. De opvolging wordt daarom afgestemd op de uitgevoerde operatie en de individuele evolutie van elk paard.

De kwaliteit van chirurgische zorg hangt ook af van de nauwkeurigheid en regelmaat van de postoperatieve verzorging.

Une masse nasale qui grossit et saigne : pourquoi faut-il agir ?

L’apparition d’une masse anormale chez un cheval ne doit jamais être négligée, particulièrement lorsqu’elle augmente de volume, persiste ou provoque des saignements.

Ce cheval nous a été référé à Equitom après l’apparition d’une masse dans une narine, dont la croissance progressive et les saignements devenaient préoccupants.

Mais quelle était l’origine de cette masse ?

Plusieurs hypothèses diagnostiques étaient envisageables : une lésion tumorale, notamment un mélanome, ou encore un granulome, c’est-à-dire une réaction inflammatoire pouvant entraîner la formation d’une masse.

Au-delà de sa nature, sa localisation représentait également un risque pour le cheval. En augmentant de volume, une masse située dans les voies nasales peut progressivement gêner le passage de l’air et compromettre le confort respiratoire de l’animal.

Notre priorité : identifier précisément la lésion pour proposer une prise en charge adaptée.

Notre équipe chirurgicale a procédé à l’excision de la masse, une intervention consistant à retirer chirurgicalement le tissu anormal.

La masse a ensuite été envoyée au laboratoire pour une analyse histopathologique. Cet examen permet d’étudier les tissus au microscope afin de déterminer la nature exacte de la lésion.

Cette étape est essentielle : elle permet de confirmer le diagnostic, d’évaluer la nécessité d’un traitement complémentaire et d’adapter le suivi médical du cheval.

En médecine vétérinaire, retirer une masse est une étape. Comprendre sa nature est tout aussi important.

A growing, bleeding nasal mass: why is early intervention important?

The appearance of an abnormal mass in a horse should never be overlooked, particularly when it increases in size, persists or causes bleeding.
This horse was referred to Equitom after a mass developed in one nostril. Its gradual growth and the increasing episodes of bleeding raised concerns.

But what was the cause of this mass?

Several possible diagnoses were considered, including a tumour such as a melanoma, or a granuloma, an inflammatory response that can lead to the formation of a mass.

Beyond its nature, the location of the mass also posed a risk to the horse. As a mass within the nasal passages grows, it can progressively obstruct airflow and compromise the horse’s breathing.

Our priority was to identify the lesion accurately in order to recommend the most appropriate treatment.

Our surgical team proceeded with excision of the mass, a procedure involving the surgical removal of abnormal tissue.

The mass was then sent to the laboratory for histopathological analysis. This examination involves studying the tissue under a microscope to determine the exact nature of the lesion.
This step is essential: it helps confirm the diagnosis, establish whether further treatment is required and tailor the horse’s medical follow-up.

In veterinary medicine, removing a mass is one step. Understanding what it is matters just as much.

What should you do if you notice an unusual mass on your horse?

A new lump, a lesion that changes over time or unexplained bleeding should not be ignored.
Take dated photographs to document its development and contact your veterinarian promptly. This information can be valuable in assessing how quickly the lesion is growing and guiding further diagnostic investigations.

Maar wat was de oorzaak van deze massa?

Er waren verschillende mogelijke diagnoses: een tumor, zoals een melanoom, of een granuloom: een ontstekingsreactie die kan leiden tot de vorming van een massa.

Niet alleen de aard van de massa was belangrijk, ook de locatie vormde een risico voor het paard. Naarmate een massa in de neusholte groter wordt, kan ze de luchtstroom geleidelijk belemmeren en de ademhaling van het dier bemoeilijken.

Onze prioriteit: het letsel nauwkeurig identificeren om een aangepaste behandeling te kunnen voorstellen.

Ons chirurgisch team heeft de massa operatief verwijderd. Deze ingreep wordt excisie genoemd en bestaat uit het chirurgisch wegnemen van abnormaal weefsel.

Vervolgens werd de massa naar het laboratorium gestuurd voor histopathologisch onderzoek. Hierbij wordt het weefsel onder de microscoop onderzocht om de exacte aard van de afwijking vast te stellen.

Deze stap is essentieel: ze helpt de diagnose te bevestigen, te bepalen of een aanvullende behandeling nodig is en de verdere medische opvolging van het paard aan te passen.
In de diergeneeskunde is het verwijderen van een massa slechts één stap. Begrijpen wat de aard ervan is, is minstens even belangrijk.

Een zwelling, een letsel dat verandert of een onverklaarbare bloeding bij uw paard verdienen uw aandacht.

Une masse qui menace dangereusement la respiration de ce cheval.

Ce cheval a été amené chez Equitom pour être soulagé d’une masse qui ne cessait de grossir au niveau de la gorge. Il s’agissait de mélanomes qui sont fréquents chez les chevaux gris et, cette fois, c’est ce cheval qu’ils ont décidé de toucher.

Au fil de son développement, cette masse risquait de comprimer de plus en plus les voies respiratoires et les vaisseaux sanguins, pouvant compromettre la respiration du cheval et mettre sa vie en danger. Il était donc essentiel d’intervenir avant que la situation ne devienne critique.

En raison de la proximité de structures anatomiques vitales, cette zone est particulièrement délicate à opérer.

Chaque geste compte : il faut pouvoir accéder à la masse tout en préservant au maximum les structures environnantes. Un véritable défi chirurgical.
Notre chirurgien a donc dû ouvrir soigneusement la zone et libérer progressivement la masse des tissus auxquels elle était attachée, afin de pouvoir la retirer avec précision.

L’intervention s’est bien déroulée. La tumeur a pu être retirée et le pronostic est encourageant, avec un risque de récidive très faible.

Derrière cette intervention, il y avait un objectif essentiel : permettre à ce cheval de retrouver son confort et de respirer sereinement. 🙏

A mass dangerously threatening this horse’s breathing.

This horse was brought to Equitom to be relieved of a mass that kept growing in the throat area. It turned out to be melanomas, which are common in grey horses, and this time, this horse was the one affected.

As it continued to grow, the mass risked increasingly compressing the airways and blood vessels, potentially compromising the horse’s breathing and putting its life at risk. It was therefore essential to intervene before the situation became critical.

Due to the proximity of vital anatomical structures, this area is particularly delicate to operate on.

Every movement counts: it is essential to access the mass while preserving the surrounding structures as much as possible. A real surgical challenge.
Our surgeon therefore had to carefully open the area and gradually free the mass from the tissues it was attached to, in order to remove it precisely.

The procedure went well. The tumour was successfully removed, and the prognosis is encouraging, with a very low risk of recurrence.

Behind this procedure was one essential goal: to help this horse regain its comfort and breathe easily again. 🙏

Een massa die de ademhaling van dit paard ernstig bedreigt.

Dit paard werd naar Equitom gebracht om verlost te worden van een massa die ter hoogte van de keel bleef groeien. Het bleek om melanomen te gaan, die vaak voorkomen bij grijze paarden. Deze keer was dit paard het slachtoffer.

Naarmate de massa verder groeide, dreigde ze de luchtwegen en bloedvaten steeds meer samen te drukken, waardoor de ademhaling van het paard in gevaar kon komen en zijn leven bedreigd kon worden. Het was daarom essentieel om in te grijpen voordat de situatie kritiek werd.

Door de nabijheid van vitale anatomische structuren is deze zone bijzonder moeilijk om te opereren.

Elke beweging telt: de massa moet bereikbaar zijn, terwijl de omliggende structuren zoveel mogelijk behouden moeten blijven. Een echte chirurgische uitdaging.

Onze chirurg moest de zone daarom zorgvuldig openen en de massa geleidelijk losmaken van de weefsels waaraan ze vastzat, om ze nauwkeurig te kunnen verwijderen.

De operatie is goed verlopen. De tumor kon verwijderd worden en de prognose is bemoedigend, met een zeer klein risico op herval.

Achter deze ingreep zat één essentieel doel: ervoor zorgen dat dit paard zich opnieuw comfortabel voelt en weer rustig kan ademen. 🙏

🔩 Kystes osseux : Les vis résorbables révolutionnent le traitement !

🦴 Les kystes osseux sont une affection de plus en plus rencontrée chez le cheval. La forme la plus fréquente est d’origine développementale et apparaît au cours des premiers mois ou de la première année de vie. Leur origine est très similaire à celle de l’OCD (ostéochondrose disséquante), liée à un trouble de la vascularisation du cartilage en cours d’ossification.
Au fil des années, différentes approches thérapeutiques ont été utilisées pour traiter les kystes osseux, avec deux objectifs principaux :

•⁠ ⁠Améliorer, voire faire disparaître, la boiterie existante.
•⁠ ⁠Améliorer, voire normaliser, l’aspect radiographique du kyste.

✔ Chez Equitom, notre équipe a récemment commencé à utiliser un implant entièrement résorbable pour traiter cette affection :
•⁠ ⁠Le kyste est abordé par forage extra-articulaire, sans endommager l’articulation.
•⁠ ⁠Son contenu est retiré. Les kystes contiennent en effet un tissu fortement pro-inflammatoire.
•⁠ ⁠La cavité est ensuite comblée à l’aide d’un implant conçu pour stimuler et favoriser la formation osseuse à l’intérieur du kyste.

🔩Bone cysts: Resorbable screws a revolutionizing treatment!

🦴 Bone cysts are an upcoming pathology in horses. The most common type is developmental, formed during the first months/year of the horse’s life. The origin is very similar to OCD (trouble in vascularisation of ossifying cartilage).

Over the years, many treatments have been used for bone cysts with two main objectives:
•⁠ ⁠improve and resolve existing lameness
•⁠ ⁠⁠improve and resolve radiographic appearance of the cyst

✔ At equitom, our team has recently started using a fully resorbable implant to treat this disorder:
•⁠ ⁠the cyst is drilled from an extra-articular approach (not damaging the joint).
•⁠ ⁠The content of the cyst is removed (cysts are filled with a highly pro-inflammatory tissue).
•⁠ ⁠Finally the cavity is filled with an implant designed to stimulate and facilitate bone formation within the cyst.
•⁠ ⁠The implant itself is resorbed within 3 years after placement.

🩺 Recent studies have shown very promising outcomes, both in terms of improving existing lameness and preventing future lameness, as well as encouraging radiographic results.

The main factors for success are:
•⁠ ⁠age - the younger the better (yearling or younger)
•⁠ ⁠⁠state of the joint (cfr arthrosis)
•⁠ ⁠⁠size and location of the cyst

🔩 Botcysten: een doorbraak in de behandeling dankzij resorbeerbare schroeven!

🦴 Botcysten komen steeds vaker voor bij paarden. De meest voorkomende vorm van botcysten ontstaat tijdens de eerste levensmaanden of het eerste levensjaar, wanneer het paard nog in volle groei is. De oorzaak is sterk vergelijkbaar met die van OCD (osteochondrose dissecans) en houdt verband met een verstoorde bloedvoorziening van het verbenende kraakbeen.

Door de jaren heen werden verschillende behandelingen toegepast voor botcysten, met twee belangrijke doelstellingen:
•⁠ ⁠De bestaande kreupelheid verminderen of volledig verhelpen.
•⁠ ⁠Het radiografische beeld van de cyste verbeteren of normaliseren.

✔ Bij Equitom is ons team onlangs gestart met het gebruik van een volledig resorbeerbaar implantaat voor de behandeling van deze aandoening:
•⁠ ⁠De cyste wordt via een extra-articulaire benadering aangeboord, zonder het gewricht te beschadigen.
•⁠ De inhoud van de cyste wordt verwijderd. BBotcystenbevatten namelijk weefsel dat een sterke ontstekingsreactie kan veroorzaken.
•⁠ ⁠Vervolgens wordt de holte opgevuld met een implantaat dat de botvorming in de cyste stimuleert en bevordert.
•⁠ ⁠Het implantaat wordt binnen drie jaar na plaatsing volledig door het lichaam afgebroken en opgenomen.

🩺 Recente studies tonen zeer veelbelovende resultaten. Zowel wat betreft het verbeteren van bestaande kreupelheid en het voorkomen van toekomstige kreupelheid als op het vlak van de radiografische resultaten.

De belangrijkste factoren voor een succesvolle behandeling zijn:
De leeftijd: hoe jonger het paard, hoe beter de vooruitzichten (bij voorkeur een jaarling of jonger).
De toestand van het gewricht: met aandacht voor eventuele artrose.
De grootte en de locatie van de cyste.

Les mélanomes ce n’est pas que chez les chevaux gris!

Saviez-vous que plus de 80 % des chevaux gris de plus de 15 ans développent des mélanomes ?

Bien que ce cheval ait une robe cremello, il est également porteur du gène gris, ce qui le prédispose au développement de mélanomes, tout comme les autres chevaux gris.

Les mélanomes apparaissent fréquemment autour de la queue, de l’a**s et des organes génitaux. Bien que ces tumeurs soient souvent bénignes, elles peuvent évoluer vers une forme maligne. Il est donc essentiel de surveiller régulièrement leur évolution.

Dans ce cas, le cheval présentait plusieurs mélanomes volumineux autour de l’a**s, dont certains s’étaient ulcérés, provoquant des douleurs et un inconfort important. En grossissant, ces masses peuvent finir par gêner, voire empêcher, l’évacuation normale des crottins.

👉 Notre équipe chirurgicale a donc décidé de retirer ces masses afin de soulager le cheval et d’améliorer sa qualité de vie.

✓ Ce qu’il faut retenir : les mélanomes ne sont pas une fatalité.

Tous les mélanomes ne nécessitent pas forcément une intervention chirurgicale immédiate. Cependant, lorsqu’ils grossissent, s’ulcèrent ou commencent à affecter le confort du cheval, la chirurgie peut être une excellente option. Même dans les cas les plus sévères ou les plus avancés, des solutions de traitement peuvent encore être envisagées.

Did you know that over 80% of grey horses over the age of 15 develop melanomas?
Although this horse has a cremello coat, it also carries the grey gene, which makes it susceptible to developing melanomas, just like other grey horses.

Melanomas are particularly common around the tail, a**s and ge***al area. While these tumours are often benign, they can become malignant, making regular monitoring essential.

In this case, the horse presented with several large perianal melanomas, some of which had become ulcerated, causing significant discomfort and pain. As these masses grow, they can eventually interfere with the horse's ability to pass manure normally.

👉Our surgical team therefore decided to remove the masses to relieve the horse's discomfort and improve its quality of life.

✓One important thing to remember: melanomas are not necessarily a life sentence.
Not every melanoma requires immediate surgery, but when tumours grow, become ulcerated or start affecting the horse's comfort, surgical removal can be an excellent treatment option. Even in the most severe or advanced cases, treatment options may still be available.

Niet enkel schimmelpaarden hebben melanomen 🐴

Wist je dat meer dan 80% van de schimmels ouder dan 15 jaar melanomen ontwikkelt?

Hoewel dit paard een crèmekleurige vacht heeft, draagt het ook het schimmelgen. Daardoor heeft het, net als andere schimmels, een verhoogde kans om melanomen te ontwikkelen.

Melanomen komen vooral voor rond de staart, de a**s en de geslachtsdelen. Hoewel deze tumoren vaak goedaardig zijn, kunnen ze kwaadaardig worden. Het is dan ook belangrijk om hun evolutie regelmatig op te volgen.

In dit geval had het paard verschillende grote melanomen rond de a**s, waarvan sommige al verzweerd waren. Dit veroorzaakte heel wat pijn en ongemak. Naarmate deze gezwellen groter worden, kunnen ze de normale mestafvoer bemoeilijken of zelfs belemmeren.

👉 Ons chirurgisch team besloot daarom om de gezwellen operatief te verwijderen, met als doel het ongemak te verlichten en de levenskwaliteit van het paard te verbeteren.

✓ Belangrijk om te onthouden: melanomen zijn niet noodzakelijk een uitzichtloze situatie.

Niet elk melanoom moet onmiddellijk operatief verwijderd worden. Maar wanneer de gezwellen groter worden, verzweren of het comfort van het paard beïnvloeden, kan een chirurgische ingreep een uitstekende behandelingsoptie zijn. Zelfs bij de meest ernstige of vergevorderde gevallen zijn er vaak nog behandelingsmogelijkheden.

Extraction dentaire

Un problème bucco-dentaire n'est pas toujours aussi visible qu'on ne le pense.

Ce cheval a été référé à Equitom pour une infection associée à la dent 406, la première prémolaire de la mâchoire inférieure droite.

Lors de l'examen buccal, nos vétérinaires ont constaté que la gencive n'adhérait pas correctement à la dent, créant ainsi un espace anormal entre celle-ci et les tissus environnants.

Lorsque la gencive n'assure plus une étanchéité suffisante autour d'une dent, des bactéries et des particules alimentaires peuvent s'accumuler dans cet espace. Avec le temps, cela peut entraîner une inflammation, une maladie parodontale et une infection des tissus environnants.

Des examens d'imagerie diagnostique complémentaires ont révélé des signes d'infection associés à la dent concernée.

Les infections dentaires chez les chevaux peuvent être particulièrement complexes, car des lésions importantes peuvent se développer sous la gencive avant même l'apparition de symptômes cliniques évidents.

Dans ce cas, la dent atteinte a été retirée afin d'éliminer la source de l'infection et de permettre la cicatrisation des tissus environnants.

Bien qu'une extraction dentaire puisse sembler relativement simple, les dents des chevaux possèdent de longues racines et présentent des rapports anatomiques complexes avec l'os environnant. Une extraction minutieuse est essentielle pour limiter les traumatismes des tissus adjacents et réduire le risque de complications.

Dental extraction

A problem in the mouth is not always as visible as it may seem.

This horse was presented to Equitom with an infection associated with tooth 406, the first premolar in the lower right jaw.

During the oral examination, our veterinary team noticed that the gingiva (gum tissue) was not properly attached around the tooth, creating an abnormal space between the tooth and surrounding tissues.

When the gingiva no longer forms a tight seal around a tooth, bacteria and food particles can accumulate in this space. Over time, this can lead to inflammation, periodontal disease and infection of the surrounding tissues.

Further diagnostic imaging revealed signs of infection associated with the affected tooth.

Dental infections in horses can be particularly challenging because significant changes may develop beneath the gumline before obvious clinical symptoms become apparent.

Tandextractie

Een probleem in de mond is niet altijd zo zichtbaar als het lijkt.

Dit paard werd bij Equitom aangeboden met een infectie ter hoogte van tand 406, de eerste premolaar in de rechteronderkaak.

Tijdens het mondonderzoek stelde ons dierenartsenteam vast dat het tandvlees niet goed aansloot rond de tand, waardoor er een abnormale ruimte ontstond tussen de tand en de omliggende weefsels.

Wanneer het tandvlees de tand niet langer goed omsluit, kunnen bacteriën en voedselresten zich in deze ruimte ophopen. Na verloop van tijd kan dit leiden tot ontsteking, parodontale aandoeningen en infectie van de omliggende weefsels.

Aanvullende diagnostische beeldvorming toonde tekenen van een infectie ter hoogte van de aangetaste tand.

Tandinfecties bij paarden kunnen bijzonder complex zijn, omdat er zich onder het tandvlees al aanzienlijke veranderingen kunnen ontwikkelen voordat er duidelijke klinische symptomen zichtbaar worden.

In dit geval werd de aangetaste tand verwijderd om de infectiebron weg te nemen en de omliggende weefsels de kans te geven te genezen.

Hoewel een tandextractie relatief eenvoudig kan klinken, hebben paardentanden lange wortels en een complexe anatomische relatie met het omliggende bot. Een zorgvuldige extractie is essentieel om beschadiging van de omliggende weefsels te beperken en het risico op complicaties te verminderen.

Deze casus benadrukt het belang van een grondig tandheelkundig onderzoek en diagnostische beeldvorming. Het vroegtijdig herkennen van parodontale afwijkingen kan helpen om verdere infecties te voorkomen en de mondgezondheid van het paard op lange termijn te behouden.
