🦟 Westnijlvirus vastgesteld bij kleurkanaries

Bij NeorniVet bevestigden we recent westnijlvirus (WNV) bij kleurkanaries, via gericht labo-onderzoek. Voor zover wij weten is dit het eerste bevestigde geval bij kleurkanaries in België.

Het virus circuleert sinds 2025 in ons land tussen steekmuggen en wilde vogels. Deze zomer werd het ook bij paarden en bij wilde vogels in verschillende regio's aangetoond.

Wat ons opviel: bij deze kanaries zagen we een zeer acuut verloop en zware sterfte. Sommige vogels zaten één dag dik (opgezette veren) en waren de dag nadien dood. Er is dus bijzonder weinig tijd om in te grijpen.

Kanaries blijken bijzonder gevoelig te kunnen zijn voor het westnijlvirus. Experimenteel onderzoek toonde eerder een zeer snelle virusvermeerdering en hoge sterfte aan bij besmette kanaries. Dat kan het bijzonder acute verloop dat wij in deze uitbraak vaststellen mee verklaren.

⚠️ Waar let je op?
- plots dik zitten, opgezette veren
- sufheid, minder activiteit
- verminderde eetlust
- zenuwsymptomen: scheve hals, coördinatieverlies, verlamming
- onverwachte sterfte in korte tijd

🦟 Wat kan je zelf doen?
- muggengaas voor ramen en volières
- stilstaand water vermijden: drinkbakken dagelijks verversen, regentonnen afdekken, schotels leegmaken
- vogels extra afschermen bij zonsondergang, wanneer muggen het actiefst zijn
- voor vogels bestaat er geen vaccin, muggenwering is je enige echte bescherming

Belangrijk om te weten: een besmette vogel geeft het virus niet rechtstreeks door aan mensen of aan andere dieren. Daarvoor is altijd een mug nodig.

En even goed: niet iedere vogel die plots sterft, heeft westnijlvirus. Ook andere oorzaken kunnen een gelijkaardig beeld geven. Goede diagnostiek blijft essentieel.

🦟 Virus du Nil occidental détecté chez des canaris de couleur

Chez NeorniVet, nous avons récemment confirmé la présence du virus du Nil occidental (VNO) chez des canaris de couleur, par analyse de laboratoire ciblée. À notre connaissance, il s'agit du premier cas confirmé chez des canaris de couleur en Belgique.

Le virus circule depuis 2025 dans notre pays entre les moustiques et les oiseaux sauvages. Cet été, il a également été mis en évidence chez des chevaux et chez des oiseaux sauvages dans plusieurs régions.

Ce qui nous a frappés : chez ces canaris, l'évolution était très aiguë et la mortalité importante. Certains oiseaux restaient une journée en boule (plumage ébouriffé) et étaient morts le lendemain. Le temps d'intervention est donc extrêmement court.

Les canaris semblent pouvoir être particulièrement sensibles au virus du Nil occidental. Des travaux expérimentaux ont montré auparavant une multiplication virale très rapide et une mortalité élevée chez des canaris infectés. Cela peut contribuer à expliquer l'évolution particulièrement aiguë que nous constatons dans ce foyer.

⚠️ À quoi faut-il être attentif ?

- oiseau soudainement en boule, plumage ébouriffé
- abattement, activité réduite
- baisse de l'appétit
- symptômes nerveux : torticolis, perte de coordination, paralysie
- mortalité inattendue en peu de temps

🦟 Que pouvez-vous faire vous-même ?

- placer des moustiquaires devant les fenêtres et les volières
- éviter les eaux stagnantes : renouveler les abreuvoirs chaque jour, - couvrir les citernes d'eau de pluie, vider les soucoupes
- protéger davantage les oiseaux au coucher du soleil, lorsque les moustiques sont les plus actifs
- il n'existe pas de vaccin pour les oiseaux, la lutte contre les moustiques est votre seule véritable protection

Important à savoir : un oiseau infecté ne transmet pas directement le virus à l'homme ni à d'autres animaux. Un moustique est toujours nécessaire.

Et tout aussi important : tout oiseau qui meurt subitement n'est pas atteint du virus du Nil occidental. D'autres causes peuvent donner un tableau comparable. Un bon diagnostic reste essentiel.

🦟 West Nile virus confirmed in colour canaries

At NeorniVet, we recently confirmed West Nile virus (WNV) in colour canaries through targeted laboratory testing. As far as we know, this is the first confirmed case in colour canaries in Belgium.

The virus has been circulating in this country since 2025 between mosquitoes and wild birds. This summer it was also detected in horses and in wild birds in several regions.

What struck us: in these canaries we saw a very acute course and heavy losses. Some birds sat fluffed up for a single day and were dead the next. There is very little time to intervene.

Canaries appear to be able to be particularly susceptible to West Nile virus. Experimental work has previously shown very rapid viral replication and high mortality in infected canaries. That may help explain the strikingly acute course we are seeing in this outbreak.

⚠️ What to watch for

- sudden fluffed-up posture, ruffled feathers
- lethargy, reduced activity
- reduced appetite
- neurological signs: twisted neck, loss of coordination, paralysis
unexpected deaths within a short period

🦟 What you can do yourself

- mosquito netting on windows and aviaries
- avoid standing water: refresh drinkers daily, cover water butts, empty saucers
- give birds extra protection at sunset, when mosquitoes are most active
- there is no vaccine for birds, mosquito control is your only real protection

Worth knowing: an infected bird does not pass the virus directly to people or to other animals. A mosquito is always needed.

And just as important: not every bird that dies suddenly has West Nile virus. Other causes can produce a similar picture. Sound diagnostics remain essential.

🟡 De laatste weken zien we opvallend meer zangvogels binnenkomen met trichomonas.

Deze parasitaire kropinfectie, ook 'het Geel' genoemd naar de gele letsels in bek en keel, zien we voornamelijk kanaries maar kan ook andere zangvogels treffen.

Belangrijkste symptomen? Natte ogen, opgezette oogleden en sinussen, dik zitten en happen naar lucht

Wacht indien u dit ziet niet af en maak een afspraak bij NeorniVet. Hoe sneller er duidelijkheid is, hoe beter voor uw vogel.

🟡 Ces dernières semaines, nous constatons une nette augmentation du nombre d’oiseaux chanteurs atteints de trichomonose.

Cette infection parasitaire du jabot, également appelée « le jaune » en raison des lésions jaunes qu’elle provoque dans le bec et la gorge, touche principalement les canaris, mais peut aussi affecter d’autres oiseaux chanteurs.

Les principaux symptômes ? Des yeux larmoyants, des paupières et des sinus gonflés, un oiseau qui reste en boule et une respiration difficile, le bec ouvert.

Si vous observez l’un de ces symptômes, n’attendez pas et prenez rendez-vous chez NeorniVet. Plus vite nous saurons ce qu’il en est, mieux ce sera pour votre oiseau.

🟡 Over the past few weeks, we have seen a noticeable increase in songbirds presenting with trichomoniasis.

This parasitic infection of the crop, also known as “canker” because of the yellow lesions it causes in the mouth and throat, mainly affects canaries but can also occur in other songbirds.

The main symptoms? Watery eyes, swollen eyelids and sinuses, sitting fluffed up, and gasping for air.

If you notice any of these symptoms, do not wait but make an appointment at NeorniVet. The sooner we know what is going on, the better for your bird.

🇳🇱 Deze harlekijnara is pas 3,5 weken oud en heeft een duidelijk gezwollen teen.

De diagnose: constricted toe syndrome. Hierbij knelt een ringvormige insnoering de bloedtoevoer naar de teen af. Deze aandoening komt geregeld voor bij jonge ara's, meestal tijdens de eerste levensweken en vaak bij handopfok.

Wanneer we er tijdig bij zijn, kunnen we de teen meestal behouden. Zonder snelle behandeling kan het weefsel afsterven.

De jonge ara is inmiddels behandeld en wordt goed opgevolgd. Hopelijk herstelt het teentje snel en volledig.🤞

Ziet u bij een jonge vogel een gezwollen of verkleurde teen? Wacht dan niet af en neem contact op met onze praktijk.

🇫🇷 Cet ara arlequin n’a que 3,5 semaines et présente un orteil visiblement gonflé.

Le diagnostic : un syndrome de constriction de l’orteil. Une constriction annulaire enserre l’orteil et entrave l’afflux sanguin. Cette affection s’observe régulièrement chez les jeunes aras, généralement au cours des premières semaines de vie et souvent chez les oiseaux élevés à la main.

Lorsqu’on intervient à temps, l’orteil peut généralement être sauvé. Sans traitement rapide, les tissus risquent de se nécroser.

Le jeune ara a entre-temps été traité et fait l’objet d’un suivi attentif. Nous espérons que son orteil guérira rapidement et complètement. 🤞

🇬🇧 This harlequin macaw is just 3.5 weeks old and has a visibly swollen toe.

The diagnosis: constricted toe syndrome. A ring-like constriction tightens around the toe and restricts its blood supply. This condition is regularly seen in young macaws, usually during the first weeks of life and often in hand-reared chicks.

When detected early, the toe can usually be saved. Without prompt treatment, the tissue may die.

The young macaw has since been treated and is being closely monitored. We hope its toe makes a quick and full recovery. 🤞

A new mutation cracked: the SL ino2 mutation in the Red-lored Amazon (Amazona autumnalis) is now genetically testable 🦜

A new chapter for the Red-lored Amazon (Amazona autumnalis): NeorniLab can now genetically test the newly identified SL ino2 mutation.

In aviculture, this mutation has already been described under several popular names: cinnamon-like, pallid, or even incomplete lutino. But genetically, and in line with the international standards followed by Ornitho-Genetics VZW, we will refer to this mutation as SL ino2. Phenotypically, SL ino2 causes a very strong, but not total, reduction of eumelanin. While it has sometimes been described as pallid-like, pallid usually refers to an approximately 50% eumelanin reduction. SL ino2 therefore appears to fit much better with the pearly description, where the reduction of eumelanin in this mutation is closer to 90%.

This mutation is sex-linked recessive. That means only males can be split. A male can carry the mutation without showing it, while females cannot be split for a sex-linked recessive mutation: they are either visual or not carrying it.

Until now, breeders had to rely mainly on appearance, breeding results and assumptions. From now on, you can test it genetically, so you pair on facts instead of on luck.
