I found kittens! 🐈🐈⬛🐈🐈🐈⬛ What do I do???
Re-posting this advice as kitten season is now in full swing and the chance of finding a litter of kittens is about as high as - well, undesexed cats having kittens!
So, what do you do if you find a bunch of kittens in your shed, behind the local shops, under a bush in your garden or anywhere really? Before you bundle them into the nearest cat carrier and take them into your home or the nearest cat rescue, think about CASA - Condition Age Situation Ability.*
If the kittens are still very young (Age), healthy (Condition), in a safe place and their mum is around (Situation), it's often best to leave them where they are - and let a cat rescue organisation such as Yass Valley Cat Rescue know (Ability) so they can monitor them and take them into their care when they are old enough to be fostered for adoption. If you can't see mum, wait at a safe distance or come back later - she may just be away getting food, rather than having abandoned her babies. Taking the kittens without mum not only means they may need to be bottle-fed day and night, but also that mum misses out on being de-sexed and the cycle continues....
On the other hand, if the kittens look unhealthy (Condition), or you find them in a box on the side of the road with no sign of mum (Situation), you should let a cat rescue organisation know immediately - as well as consider your ability to take them home and look after them, given the often limited resources of cat rescues during peak kitten season in spring (Ability).

(*CASA is an approach developed by well-known US cat authority , the Kitten Lady. And perhaps not coincidentally, CASA is the Spanish word for home - following this approach will help the kittens find a safe home, at the right time)
