One of the many things I’ve learned from Mazzy and Paolo is that calm doesn’t just happen - we need to work hard for it!

Enrichment has been one of the biggest shifts for us. Trainers have taught us that giving them something to lick, sniff and work through actually helps them settle, while building a positive association with their crate.

We’re starting a little series to test what really holds their attention - let us know if you have any ideas for us to try…

What started with our dog Paolo has now helped thousands of Aussie dogs find their calm space.

As we get close to four years since starting The Paws Room, we’ve been reflecting a little on how it all began.

Tom and I usually prefer to stay behind the scenes (the dogs are much better looking after all), but we thought it might be time to show our faces!

It’s Tom who keeps everything running day to day and somehow manages the challenges that come with scaling operations, while I’ve been focused on building our brand, learning the highs and lows of e-commerce in real time.

The idea though, started with our dogs.

Our Covid Shar Pei, Paolo, is deeply loyal and also quite an anxious soul. With the guidance of trainers, we learned how powerful a crate can be when it’s introduced the right way. Not as confinement, but as a safe, predictable space where a dog can truly relax.

Then there’s Mazzy, our food-motivated, always-on herder and unofficial product tester. If there’s a way for a dog to escape or break something, Mazzy will usually show us… until it’s just right.

What started as something we were trying to solve for our own dogs has grown into a family business built around things we care deeply about: the wellbeing of dogs, thoughtful design that fits naturally into our homes, and creating products that are made to last.

To everyone who has trusted us enough to bring one of our crates into your home, thank you. It means a lot.

We feel very lucky to play even a small role in helping dogs feel safe, settled and truly at home.
