Fussy dog, or are they actually trying to tell you something?
We hear about "fussy eaters" all the time in store, but honestly, a lot of the time it's less about attitude and more about instinct.
Your dog might just be asking for:
- More variety in their diet
- Better digestion support
- Different protein sources
- Higher quality nutrients
- Less processed food

And sometimes, a few simple changes make a world of difference:
- Rotate your proteins regularly
- Add bone broth for gut support and flavour
- Include tripe (dogs go mad for it)
- Try toppers like Norm's to boost meal appeal
- Focus on improving moisture intake

One thing a lot of people don't realise, dogs are not natural grazers. Leaving food down all day is usually more convenient for us than it is for them. Structured feeding times can do wonders for appetite, digestion, gut health, food motivation and behaviour around meals.

If you've got a fussy eater at home, come in and chat to our team. It's genuinely one of our favourite things to help with, and more often than not, the fix is simpler than you'd think. πŸ’š

We know how much you love our team, so we've been getting them more involved around the store lately ... and it turns out, that was a mistake. πŸ˜…
Caught them slacking on the job. No notes.

On a more useful note ... have you checked out our pet bed range lately? We've got beds in every shape, size, colour, texture and price point, because every pet sleeps differently, and every pawrent has a different budget.

Whether your fur baby is a sprawler, a curler, a burrower or a "I'll sleep wherever I want, thanks" type, we've got something for them.
Pop in store, browse the range, and maybe check the corners to make sure our team aren't testing the stock themselves. πŸ‘€πŸ’€

Did you know raw feeding is beneficial for your cats as well? Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their bodies are literally built to thrive on meat. Yet so many cats are living on heavily processed food day in, day out.

Switching to raw, or even just adding some variety, can make a real difference to how your cat looks, feels, and functions.

Some great protein options for cats include:
πŸ” Chicken - A gentle, easy-to-digest starting point. Great for cats new to raw feeding.
πŸ‡ Rabbit - Biologically spot-on for cats. Lean, nutrient-dense, and closely mirrors what they'd eat in the wild.
🐟 Fish (sardines, mackerel) - Rich in omega-3s to support healthy skin, coat, and inflammation response. Best offered a few times a week rather than daily.
πŸ¦†Duck + Quail - Brilliant options for cats with sensitivities to more common proteins.
πŸ„ Beef/Organ meat - Liver and heart are nutritional powerhouses. Small amounts go a long way.

The key is variety. Rotating proteins helps ensure your cat gets a broad spectrum of nutrients and keeps mealtime interesting for even the fussiest of eaters.

Not sure where to start? Our team can help you build a raw feeding plan that works for your cat. Pop in and have a chat.

Dex has eaten his fair share of different proteins, but he knows what's good. Every single time, the sardines go first. No hesitation, no sniffing around. Just straight in.
And honestly? We don't blame him.

Sardines are one of the most nutrient-dense additions you can make to your dog's bowl. Small fish, big benefits.
Here's why we love them:
🐟 Omega-3 fatty acids to help maintain healthy skin, a shiny coat and support a healthy inflammatory response
🧠 DHA which supports healthy brain function
πŸ’ͺ Natural protein that's highly digestible and bioavailable
🦴 Calcium and phosphorus from the soft, edible bones, great for bone and joint health
❀️ CoQ10 to support heart health

Sardines are also a brilliant option for dogs with sensitivities to more common proteins, and because they're a small fish, they're naturally lower in heavy metals than larger species.
The best part? You'll find them available in frozen bags in store, ready to add to your dog's next meal.

Available in store now at all The Pet Food Shop locations.

The weather is changing and our pets? They're absolutely making the most of it.
Muddy paws, wet fur, mystery dirt from who-knows-where. And somehow it all ends up on your floors, your car seats, and your couch. Enter the Dirty Dog Doormat. πŸ™Œ

This little legend soaks up to 7 times its weight in water and mud, dries 5 times faster than a regular doormat, and stays put thanks to its super gripper backing. It's soft on paws, tough on mess, and honestly one of those products you didn't know you needed until you have one.
Use it at the front door, in the car, under food and water bowls, in crates, caravans, when camping ... basically anywhere your pet goes and chaos follows. Available in 3 sizes and a range of colours, which we love!

Pop in and check them out before the real muddy season hits. πŸ˜…

Rawspirit Canine Nutrition - Serving Up The Raw Truth - Why Feeding Dogs Like Humans Is a Biological Mismatch

β€œI only feed my dog food that I would eat myself.” Or… β€œI only feed human grade.”
It sounds responsible and compassionate. But biologically, it reveals a fundamental misunderstanding.
Dogs are not small humans.
Their nutritional requirements are not a reflection of our own.
Humans are omnivores. Dogs are facultative carnivores, biologically designed to thrive on raw animal based nutrition. Their digestive system, enzymatic activity, and metabolic pathways are centred around consuming animal tissue.
And not just muscle meat.

In nature, dogs consume the entire prey structure:
- muscle
- skin
- tendons and ligaments
- cartilage
- organs
- bone
- fur and feathers
This is not incidental. It is essential.

Dogs are designed for whole animal nutrition, yet modern pet food has moved in the opposite direction.
The term β€œhuman grade” has become a marketing tool associated with quality and safety.
But β€œhuman grade” does not mean biologically appropriate for a dog. It simply means acceptable to a human.

In practice, this often results in removal of connective tissue and structural components, and in making meat more suitable for humans, we make it less complete for dogs. This is where biologically whole protein matters.

Biologically whole protein includes connective tissue, cartilage, fascia, elastin, naturally occurring fats, and trace minerals in their natural form.
These tissues are naturally rich in:
- collagen
- glycine
- proline
- glucosamine complexes
- chondroitin
- hyaluronic acid
The very compounds later isolated and sold back as supplements. Connective tissue is not waste. It is functional nutrition.

From a biochemical perspective, feeding only lean muscle meat creates imbalance because muscle meat alone lacks the amino acid balance found in whole prey.
When muscle is consumed alongside connective tissue, the amino acid profile becomes aligned with canine physiology, supporting joints and tendons, skin integrity, gut health, detoxification pathways & structural resilience.

In simple terms:
- Muscle meat supports function.
- Connective tissue supports structure.
- Without structure, nothing holds.
When dogs are fed biologically whole protein rather than stripped back, human preferred cuts, the results are predictable:
- stronger joints
- improved gut integrity
- healthier skin
- better recovery
- greater resilience
Not because something was added. But because something essential was never removed, this is nourishment in its complete form.

This is not about feeding something β€œlesser.” It is about feeding what is biologically complete.

At Raw Spirit, this philosophy shapes everything we do.
Biologically whole protein is not something we invented. It is something we have returned to. By including connective tissue, cartilage, and natural structural components, we are allowing food to exist closer to how nature designed it.
Because these components are not by-products. They are foundational nourishment.

I am a vegetarian. And I fully understand dogs are not.
So I do not feed my dogs according to what I would eat or what feels emotionally comfortable from a human perspective. I feed them according to what their biology requires.
Because every part has purpose. Every part contributes to balance.
Sourcing high-quality, biologically appropriate protein matters. And sourcing it ethically matters even more.

The Pet Food Shops encompass these standards from production to shop shelves. And that is what species-appropriate nutrition truly looks like!

We don't just sell these products. We feed them to our own pets. πŸ’š
Every protein that carries 'The Pet Food Shop' or 'Castle Estate' name is processed and packed in our own dedicated facility in regional Victoria. We select the proteins, we prepare them with care, and we oversee every single step from start to finish.
No guessing. No fillers. No shortcuts.

Just real, honest food made by people who genuinely believe in what they're producing, because it goes straight into their own pets' bowls too.

That's the difference when a business is built around fresh feeding rather than just selling it. We back our products completely, and we always have.

Proudly made in Victoria. Proudly supporting regional jobs. Proudly feeding pets the way they deserve.
