Company Overview
The Greyhound Adoption Program (GAP) is an initiative of Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV) dedicated to finding homes for greyhounds after racing. Description
The GAP page is a place for greyhound adopters, friends of GAP, and fans of greyhounds as pets. Greyhounds make fantastic pets – they are quiet, lazy, and gentle dogs that thrive in the family home environment. Greyho

unds that have passed through the program have been awarded a special green GAP collar and do not have to be muzzled in public. Every greyhound that enters the program is thoroughly temperament tested, desexed, wormed, microchipped, and vaccinated. They then spend time with a volunteer foster carer to help them adjust from life in a kennel, to life in a pet home. Our foster carers aim to familiarise the greyhounds with a variety of situations they may not have experienced in the past, like walking upstairs or on slippery floors. ✨ Meet the Team, Maria

It’s time to meet another one of the wonderful humans behind the hounds! 🐾

Meet Maria, our Foster and Volunteer Coordinator, who helps connect greyhounds with our incredible foster carers and supports the volunteers who give their time to GAP.

Before joining the team, Maria spent years working as a dog groomer. She was looking for a role that combined her love of dogs with working more closely with people, and GAP turned out to be just the place.

When she started, Maria admits she didn’t know much about greyhounds beyond one fairly obvious fact...

"I didn’t know anything about greyhounds except for how fast they were! Now I feel like I’m a greyhound bible for anyone who has questions about them. Haha!" 😂

That greyhound love has followed her home too. Maria adopted her very own GAP greyhound, Long Face Jase, a champion lounger who happily shares his home with her affectionate Jack Russell Terrier. ❤️

One of Maria’s favourite parts of her role is seeing the transformation that can happen during foster care.

"Seeing them before and after foster care, and the progress they make along the way, is quite special."

Want to learn more about Maria, Long Face Jase and the important role our foster carers and volunteers play at GAP?

For August’s Volunteer of the Month, we’re celebrating not one, but two incredible members of the GAP family, Debbie and Mike! 🐾

And there’s a pretty special milestone to celebrate with them too. The lovely Mouse, pictured with Debbie, is their 130th GAP foster! 🤍

Debbie and Mike’s fostering journey began more than 20 years ago, after adopting their first greyhound, Barney, in 2004. They quickly fell in love with the gentle nature of greyhounds and, just four weeks after welcoming Barney home, their first foster greyhound, Joe, arrived.

Barney went on to spend the next four years helping foster greyhounds learn the ropes of pet life, and Debbie and Mike haven’t looked back.

For them, one of the greatest joys of fostering is seeing the transformation that can happen in just a few weeks.

“The best part of being a foster carer is watching the change and growth in each foster as they adjust to a new routine of pet life. The difference in each dog from week one to week four is truly amazing.”

And after 130 fosters, their advice for anyone considering giving fostering a go is wonderfully simple.

“Just do it. You will get so much enjoyment and reward from each dog’s different habits and ways. The joy of watching a foster do zoomies or roach for the first time will keep the smile on your face for a long time.”

130 greyhounds, countless zoomies and roaches, and more special memories than we could possibly count.

Debbie and Mike, thank you for the extraordinary amount of time, patience and love you have given to GAP greyhounds over the years. Reaching 130 fosters is an incredible achievement, and we are so grateful to have you as part of the GAP family.

Congratulations, Debbie and Mike, our August Volunteers of the Month! 💚

💚 Greyt GAP Resources

How much does it actually cost to adopt and own a greyhound? 💰🐾

It’s an important question to ask before welcoming any dog into your family. While ongoing costs need to be considered, you might be surprised by just how much is already included when you adopt a greyhound through GAP for just $100.

From upfront adoption and setup costs to food, vet care and the everyday expenses worth budgeting for, we’ve broken down what greyhound ownership can really cost.

🐾 MEET BENSON 🐾

And yes… we know he’s not a greyhound. 😁 But when you’re this handsome, apparently the rules can be bent! He has a face that says “I am extremely charming and I have OPINIONS.”

Benson is a gorgeous Shiba Inu x French Bulldog and a retired GAP helper dog who is now ready to find a home where he can put his paws up and enjoy the good life.

Affectionate, clever and easy to train, Benson absolutely loves spending time with his people. He’s also got personality to spare — he can be sassy, excitable, boisterous and wonderfully full of fun. Life with Benson certainly won’t be boring!

Like many small dogs, Benson can swear a bit when he meets other dogs 😂 and he’s made it clear he’d prefer not to share his home with one. He’s looking for an experienced owner who understands active, intelligent dogs and will appreciate him for the funny, spirited little character he is.

🏡 Benson’s ideal home:
• The only dog in the household
• No children or elderly residents
• An experienced, dog-savvy owner
• A secure house with a yard — no apartments, please
• Someone looking for a loyal companion with a LOT of personality

In the right home, we think this handsome little fellow will absolutely shine. 💜

If Benson sounds like your kind of good boy, please contact 0408 863 145 to find out more.

💌 Love Note: Marin & Ruby

“She’s the sweetest girl… and a bit of a thief.” 🤭

It hasn’t taken long for Miss Ruby to make herself completely at home with Marin and her family.

“Ruby has fit into our family seamlessly. She is the sweetest girl and we love her very much.”

But behind that sweet face, there’s a cheeky side beginning to emerge…

Ruby has discovered the great joy of stealing slippers and toilet paper, before hiding her treasures away for later. A girl needs hobbies, after all! 😂

When she’s not planning her next heist, Ruby has been showing everyone what a clever girl she is. She’s wonderful on the lead, has been happily meeting other dogs, and has already mastered the puzzles her family bought for her.

Although we suspect the promise of a treat might provide a little extra motivation.

“She loves treats and has already mastered the puzzles we have got her.”

Ruby has even taken up a new role as Nana’s gardening assistant, though whether she’s genuinely helping or simply supervising remains to be seen. 🌱🐾

In such a short time, this sweet, clever and wonderfully cheeky girl has become a very important part of the family.

“We couldn’t imagine life without her.”

💚 Those first weeks at home are such a special time when routines start forming, personalities begin shining through and a greyhound slowly reveals all their wonderful little quirks. It sounds like Ruby has wasted absolutely no time showing Marin and her family exactly who she is!

Our final, and favourite, PUPDATE for the day!

Gary’s journey to his forever home has certainly had a few unexpected turns. ❤️

Not long after entering foster care, Gary suffered a badly broken leg in an unfortunate accident while playing and doing zoomies in the backyard. He needed extensive surgery undertaken by our fabulous vet team, followed by months of careful rest and rehabilitation.

That’s when the wonderful Belinda stepped in as Gary’s respite foster carer. She dedicated herself to his recovery, patiently seeing him through all those weeks of rest, vet visits and healing—with plenty of love along the way.

Eventually Gary returned to our kennels, fully recovered, and passed his final assessments with flying colours. We couldn’t wait to share the good news with Belinda.

Her response?

“I’d like to adopt Gary.” ❤️

Somewhere during those months of healing, a beautiful bond had formed. What began as a temporary foster home had quietly become Gary’s forever home.

Congratulations, Gary and Belinda. Some happy endings really are worth the wait. ❤️🐾

PUPDATE for Ace!

Ace with his new family, Kahlia, Dave, Emily, Patrick, and canine companion George!

After the recent loss of their beloved Border Collie, Kevin, Kahlia and her family knew they wanted George to have another four-legged friend by his side. George himself was adopted through GAP in December last year, and after thriving with Kevin's companionship, they knew he'd benefit from having another puppy pal to keep him company.

Enter Ace.

From the moment they met him, Ace won the family over with his infectious personality and happy-go-lucky nature. Having been surrendered to GAP just a couple of months ago, he was searching for the perfect place to call home, and it turns out George and his family may have been exactly that.

While no dog could ever replace Kevin, opening their hearts to Ace is a beautiful tribute to the love they shared with him, and it gives another deserving dog the chance to be part of a wonderful family.

We're absolutely thrilled that Ace and his new family found each other, and we wish them many years of happiness, adventures, and companionship together.
