PSA: “Favia” isn’t really Favia anymore… and reefers everywhere are still calling them that anyway.

One of the biggest taxonomy shake-ups in the reef hobby happened when many corals we commonly called “Favia” were reclassified into entirely different genera after genetic and skeletal studies showed they weren’t as closely related as we once thought.

What we used to casually lump together as “Favia” now includes names such as:
- Dipsastraea
- Barabattoia
- Favites
- Coelastrea
- Goniastrea
- Paragoniastrea
…and several others.

So that classic “War Coral Favia” or “Dragon Soul Favia” in your tank is technically not be a Favia at all anymore!

The funny part is that commonly used hobby names tend to stick around long after the science changes. Think Scolymia (Homophyllia), Sinularia (Scleractinia) and Acans (Micromussa) as a prime example. Most reefers, wholesalers and even stores still use the old common names because they’re familiar and easier to recognise.

It’s a great reminder that coral taxonomy is constantly evolving as science improves, especially with modern DNA analysis reshaping how we understand coral relationships.

No matter what we call them though… they’re still some of the hardiest and brightest LPS corals available in the hobby!
