Animal Justice Party NSW says a loophole in state law means people banned from owning animals due to cruelty convictions can still walk into a pet shop or contact a breeder and buy another one, because there's no register for sellers to check against.

NSW introduced automatic lifetime animal bans earlier this year for anyone convicted of serious animal cruelty offences, a change the Animal Justice Party says was an important step forward. But without a central register that pet shops and breeders can actually check before a sale, MP Emma Hurst argues the ban has no real teeth at the point of purchase.

"The loophole is harmful and easily closed," Hurst said. "It should have been closed yesterday."

Hurst, the first Animal Justice Party MP elected to NSW Parliament, has previously secured reforms including strata by-law protections for pet owners and a ban on breeding dolphins and whales for entertainment, and currently chairs the parliamentary committee overseeing companion animal issues in the state.

For many Australians, a lifetime ban that can simply be ignored at the counter of a pet shop isn't much of a ban at all.

But any register would need pet shops and breeders to check identification and cross reference court records at the point of every sale, and real questions remain about how such a system would be funded, kept up to date and enforced, particularly among smaller or informal sellers.

Do you support closing this loophole so pet shops and breeders can check if a buyer has been banned from owning animals?

Awwwwwe wow.

He went to a heartbreaking call and came home with a new family member. ❤️🐾

Cornwall firefighter James Trounson was called to a home where an elderly woman had passed away. While helping with the difficult situation, James was given the heartbreaking task of bringing her devoted 8-year-old terrier, Martha, out of the house.

Martha had stayed by her owner's side and was understandably frightened when James first approached her. But after some gentle persuasion, she finally jumped into his arms.

With no next of kin able to take Martha, James suggested bringing her to the RSPCA, where he had previously adopted his Collie, Merlin. After learning Martha needed a home, James and his fiancé, Mel, decided to make her part of their family.

Today, Martha has completely settled in. She rides along on the farm tractor, follows James everywhere, gets along with Merlin and even won over the family's cats.

What began as a heartbreaking rescue ended with Martha finding exactly what she needed: a new family that would never leave her behind. ❤️
