One of my favourite things about having a dedicated whelping room is being able to check in on Mum and the puppies whenever I'm not in there.

The soft starry-night glow from the floor gives just enough extra light overnight and makes those quiet check-ins even nicer.✨️

Meet Octavia.

Meaning "Eighth" in Latin, her name suits her story perfectly. As Alaska's eighth puppy, she made sure her arrival would be one we'd never forget.
After Alaska delivered seven healthy puppies with ease, we thought she was finished. Some time later, she began showing signs there was still one more puppy to come. As the gap grew longer and progress slowed, we decided it was time to head to the vet.

We loaded Alaska and her seven puppies into the car and set off. It seems puppy number eight had other plans and decided she wanted a dramatic entrance. In the middle of peak-hour traffic,we pulled over on the side of the highway and welcomed her into the world. Definitely not where we'd imagined delivering our final puppy—but she arrived safely.Crisis averted.

With Mum and all eight puppies doing well, we headed home to let everyone settle in. It soon became clear our little eighth-born needed a little extra support. Over the following days she was given oxygen, fluids and regular tube feeds while she found her strength.

Today, she's doing beautifully. She's feeding from Mum all on her own and, in true Octavia fashion, is often the one pushing her brothers and sisters aside to claim the best spot at the milk bar!
Breeding isn't always about the perfect moments. There are times that test you, and not every outcome is guaranteed. All we can do is make the best decisions we can, give every puppy the best possible start, and then watch them write their own story.

We'd say our little girl has already written quite the first chapter. 🤍🐾
