🐴💙**Happy Vet Nurse Day — October 9th!** 💙🐴

Today we’re celebrating the legends who keep our equine practice running — our vet nurses, support staff and admin team.

Because let’s be honest… working in equine practice in Australia is not exactly your standard 9–5.😂

There are horses that don’t want to cooperate, vets who need five things done at once, phones that never stop ringing, schedules that change by the minute, emergency call-outs, muddy boots, horse hair EVERYWHERE… and somehow, someone still has to remember where the bandage scissors are and who has got the X-Ray machine! 😂

Behind every vet who arrives on site with the right equipment, the right medications and some vague idea of what the day is supposed to look like, there’s our superstars behind the scenes: our nurses Jenyca, Maggie and Chelsea, and our admin Zoe, Rhi and Emily who has made it happen.

Our nurses are horse holders, laboratory assistants, stallion handlers and foal wrestlers. They assist in procedures, clean equipment, restock everything that mysteriously disappears and somehow remain calm when everyone else is losing the plot. Their ability to multi-task and change roles is next level.

To our amazing team:

Thank you for the early mornings, late nights, long days, muddy boots, difficult horses, last-minute changes, endless phone calls and all the things you quietly do behind the scenes.

Thank you for keeping calm when the rest of us are wondering what on earth is going on.

Thank you for keeping the chaos organised.

Thank you for fixing problems before anyone knows there was a problem.

Thank you for answering “just one quick question” approximately 86 times a day.

Thank you for loving our profession and the horses enough to deal with the chaos on a daily basis.

Thank you for being the people who make our equine practice possible.

And most importantly, thank you for caring so much about our patients, our clients and our team.

❤️🐴

Last week we held our Veterinary Seminar 'Pain Explained' hosted at the Seymour Bowling Club with all proceeds going to SES Seymour Unit
Our Guest Speaker Dr Peter Huntington from Kentucky Equine Research generously gave his time with our Seymour Equine Veterinary Speakers Dr Claire Brown, Dr Caitlin Pedler and Dr Lisa Yates who did an outstanding job.
It was a fantastic evening with great insight into how pain manifests in our beloved Equines with solutions for what the next steps are in terms of management and care for the animal.
We thank KER for lending us Dr Peter Huntington to speak in depth on areas of nutrition that can assist in pain prevention or recovery.
As a result we now offer a number of KER products instore with primary product highlights from the Seminar being EO-3 oil, EquiShure and Synovate HA. These can be ordered through our Clinic.
We would like to thank Seymour Bowling Club for their professional assistance in hosting the premises and providing behind the bar service. Gaffney Bakery did a beautiful job in preparing our Catering for the evening with taking all allergy requirements into consideration.
We always welcome feedback on our events so please feel free to send through your thoughts to [email protected]

Placentitis. Why Early Detection Matters

Placentitis is an inflammation of the placenta and is one of the most common pregnancy complications we see in mares. It is also the leading cause of late-term abortion, stillbirth, and critically ill foals, making early detection and treatment essential.
The most common form is ascending placentitis, where bacteria enter through the cervix and infect the placenta.

⚠️ Signs to watch for include:
• Premature udder development
• Milk production before term
• Vaginal discharge

Unfortunately, by the time these signs appear, the disease is often well advanced. That's why we recommend routine placental ultrasound examinations from 6 - 7 months of gestation onwards. These scans allow us to detect subtle changes before clinical signs develop, giving mares and foals the best chance of a successful outcome.

📸 This mare presented with premature udder development. On ultrasound, we identified slight placental separation and thickening of the placenta near the cervix. Early signs of placentitis! She was started on treatment immediately, and we're pleased to report that her follow-up scans show excellent improvement.

The additional ultrasound images highlight other cases of placentitis, showing abnormal placental thickening and fluid accumulation. Identifying these changes early allows treatment to begin sooner, improving the chances of a healthy mare and foal.

If your mare is in foal and approaching the later stages of pregnancy, speak to our team about scheduling a placental health check.

❄️ Looking After Your Older Horses This Winter ❄️

As horses age, maintaining body condition becomes more difficult, meaning they often need a little extra help to stay warm and comfortable through winter. With less muscle and fat to insulate them, our senior horses can benefit from a few simple management changes.

Here are our top winter tips:

🧥 Rug appropriately
While horses are remarkably good at keeping themselves warm, older horses shouldn't have to burn valuable calories just to maintain their body temperature. A well fitted rug can help conserve energy and maintain condition.

🏠 Provide shelter
Ensure your older horses have access to shelter from wind, rain and cold weather. Staying dry is just as important as staying warm.

🌾 Feed plenty of hay
Hay is your senior horse's best friend during winter! As horses slowly ferment fiber in their hindgut, they generate heat, helping to keep themselves warm from the inside out.

Older horses often benefit from increased access to quality hay during the colder months. While grains and concentrates provide calories, they don't produce the same warming effect during digestion. Oils can also be a great way to safely increase calorie intake and help maintain body condition.

An added bonus! A high fiber diet encourages water intake, helping reduce the risk of impaction colic.

🐴 Keep an eye on mobility
Cold weather can make arthritis more noticeable. Watch for stiffness, reluctance to move, or slowing down. If you've noticed your horse isn't moving as freely as they used to, give us a call. We can assess the cause and discuss management options to help keep them comfortable throughout winter.

💙 A little extra care goes a long way in keeping our golden oldies happy, healthy and comfortable this winter.

CASE STUDY UPDATE
Paisley had a grass seed blocking her tear duct!

The nasolacrimal duct (tear duct) is a small tube that connects the eye to the nose. It's actually the reason your nose runs when you cry!

Fortunately, Paisley's owners contacted us as soon as they noticed the discharge from her eye. Because it was caught early, the grass seed was easily removed before it had the chance to migrate further up the tear duct, where it could have caused a much more complicated problem.

Tear duct blockages are a relatively common condition in horses and should be considered if your horse has tears running down their face or crusting in the corner of the eye but isn't showing signs of pain. Most tear duct blockages are not caused by grass seeds or other foreign bodies, they're usually due to a simple blockage within the duct itself!

Fortunately, they can often be treated with a tear duct flush performed under standing sedation.

If you notice any unusual discharge from your horse's eye, don't wait! Early treatment can make all the difference.

Paisley's owner noticed some purulent (p***y) discharge from her eye and immediately contacted SEC. 👀😱

Any abnormal discharge from a horse's eye, especially if the eye appears cloudy, painful or swollen, should always be considered urgent!
There are several serious eye conditions that can present with these signs, and early treatment can make a significant difference.

Luckily in Paisley's case, the cause of her discharge turned out to be something quite unexpected!

Can anyone guess what was causing the problem? 🤔

Let us know your thoughts below!
