🛁🐾 The Truth About Flea Shampoo 🐾🛁

Flea shampoo might feel like a quick fix, but it only kills the fleas on your pet at the time of the bath — it doesn’t stop the cycle or protect them from re-infestation. 😬
Only 5% of the flea population is on your pet, the other 95% comprise the egg and larval stages in the home and garden.

For real, long-term protection, we recommend vet-approved flea preventatives — available as easy chewable tablets or topical spot-ons. These options:
✔ Kill fleas fast
✔ Prevent new infestations
✔ Last for up to 1-3 months.

💡 Don’t forget the environment! Fleas lay eggs in bedding, carpets and furniture — so wash your pet’s bedding regularly, vacuum well, and consider treating the home if the infestation is heavy.

If you’re not sure which preventative suits your pet best, we’re happy to help!

🌱 Sand Colic Alert! 🐴

With recent rains, green shoots are popping up — and so is the risk of sand colic in horses!

💢 Causes:
Horses grazing short pastures or feeding off sandy ground can ingest sand, which builds up in the gut.

⚠️ Signs to Watch For:
• Recurrent mild colic
• Weight loss
• Diarrhea
• Lying down more than usual

✅ Prevention Tips:
• Feed hay in tubs or off mats
• Avoid overgrazed, sandy paddocks
• Add psyllium husk to the diet: 1g per kg of body weight daily for 7 days, once a month

🐾 Who said you can’t teach an old dog (or cat) new tricks? 🧠

Just like people, our pets can experience cognitive decline as they age — a condition in pets that’s similar to Alzheimer’s disease in humans. 🐶🐱

This condition, known as Canine or Feline Cognitive Dysfunction, can sneak up slowly. Watch for signs like:

🔹 Disorientation (getting lost in familiar places)
🔹 Changes in sleep patterns
🔹 Accidents in the house or litter box
🔹 Decreased interaction with family
🔹 Pacing or restlessness
🔹 Staring at walls or into space
🔹 Seeming “confused” or more anxious than usual

🧩 The best prevention? Keep their minds and bodies active!
✔️ Environmental enrichment
✔️ Training and play
✔️ Daily exercise
✔️ Novel toys and puzzles
✔️ Antioxidant-rich diets
✔️ Acupuncture can also help support aging brains

There also may be medications and supplements that help too. Talk to your vet about what’s best for your senior pet!

💙 Let’s help them age gracefully, happily, and with dignity. Because they’ve always been there for us — now it’s our turn.

“But they’re not in pain… are they?” 🐾

One of the most common things we hear from loving pet owners is, “He doesn’t seem to be in pain,” even when their pet is limping, not eating, or acting differently. We completely understand — animals don’t express pain the way humans do, and they’re very good at hiding it.

In the wild, showing pain can make an animal vulnerable, and our pets still carry that instinct today. That means signs of discomfort can be subtle or easy to miss unless you know what to look for.

👉 For example, a dog that won’t put weight on a leg is almost always experiencing pain — even if they’re still wagging their tail. And a cat that’s stopped eating or hiding more than usual may not be “just moody” — it could be that something hurts.

🔎 Some signs of pain in dogs:
• Limping or stiffness
• Reluctance to jump, run, or climb stairs
• Restlessness or pacing
• Whining or changes in behavior

🐱 In cats, pain may look like:
• Hiding or avoiding contact
• Decreased grooming (or overgrooming)
• Growling when touched
• Not using the litter box properly

If your pet seems “a bit off” — whether they’re limping, eating less, or just not acting like themselves — it’s worth getting them checked. We’d always rather rule something out than miss a chance to help them feel better.

❤️ Our pets can’t tell us they’re hurting, but they do show us in their own way — we just have to know how to listen.

📞 If you’re ever unsure, please don’t hesitate to call us. We’re here to help you help them feel their best.

Beransa for Canine Arthritis: Understanding the Facts 🐾🐕

In light of recent media coverage regarding Beransa (an injectable treatment for osteoarthritis in dogs), we want to acknowledge the concerns some pet owners may have.

Firstly, we extend our sympathy to anyone who has experienced the loss of a pet. The grief is real and valid. It’s also important to understand that rare immune-mediated reactions can occur with any medication, human or animal, and are not specific to Beransa.

What we know about Beransa:
❗️It has undergone robust safety testing and is approved by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA).
❗️Over 25 million doses have been given worldwide with a very low incidence of adverse effects—less than 1 in 10,000.
❗️Like all medications, it is not risk-free, but serious adverse events remain extremely rare.

As vets, we’ve seen Beransa significantly improve comfort and mobility in many dogs suffering from arthritis. For many older pets, it’s been life-changing. Many of our staff also use Beransa in their own dogs.

We always tailor treatment to the individual pet, monitor for any side effects, and are happy to discuss alternative options if you’re uncertain about this medication.

This is an emotional and complex topic, and we are here to support you with compassion and accurate information. If you have any questions or concerns about Beransa or your pet’s arthritis care, please reach out—we’re here to help.

Are Raw Chicken Necks Safe for Dogs? Here’s What You Need to Know

We often get asked about feeding raw chicken necks to dogs, especially for dental health. While it might seem like a natural choice, we advise caution—and here’s why.

The Risks:
❌ Choking & Obstruction: Chicken necks can pose a choking hazard, especially for smaller dogs, or cause obstructions in the digestive tract.

❌Bacterial Contamination: Raw poultry carries bacteria like Salmonella and Campylobacter, which can be harmful to both pets and humans.

❌ Acute Polyradiculoneuritis: This rare but serious condition—similar to Guillain-Barré syndrome in humans—has been linked to raw chicken consumption in dogs. It affects the nerves and can lead to sudden paralysis, with recovery taking weeks or even months.

What Should You Feed Instead?
For safe and effective dental care:
✅ Vet-approved dental chews and food (look for the VOHC seal).
✅ Regular brushing with dog-safe toothpaste.
✅ Professional dental cleanings as advised by your veterinarian.

Your dog’s dental health is important—but it shouldn’t come at the cost of their overall safety.

Have questions about your dog’s diet or dental care? Call us or book a consult—we’re here to help!

Today, on ANZAC Day, we pause to remember and honour all who have served — both human and animal — in times of war and peace.

From the brave soldiers on the front lines to the courageous animals who stood beside them — horses, dogs, donkeys, and carrier pigeons — we pay tribute to their loyalty, strength, and sacrifice.

Lest we forget.
