🧠 Monday Mindbender 🧠

We all know ostriches can’t fly, but that’s not even the weirdest thing about these giant birds! 🪶

🏃‍♂️ Ostriches can run at speeds of up to 70 km/h, making them faster than most horses over short distances.

🦁 Male ostriches don’t just chirp or squawk—they can produce deep booming calls and roars that sound surprisingly similar to a lion.

👁️ They also have the largest eyes of any land animal, each one bigger than their brain!
Nature never fails to surprise us. 🤯💜

Did you know these facts, or did we just make you look at ostriches a little differently?

🔨 Clinic Renovation Update! 🔨

Things are really starting to come together! 🥰

This week we’ve had the flooring laid, and it’s already making the space feel like a real clinic again. Next week we’ll be moving on to painting and electrical work, which should bring everything another big step closer to completion.

It’s been amazing watching the transformation happen, and we’re getting more excited with every stage. We can’t wait to show you the finished result and welcome everyone into our beautiful new space. 💜

Stay tuned for more updates as the renovation continues!

🐾 Pet of the Week 🐾

This week the award goes to Walter the Basset 💜

Walter came in to see us with some seriously nasty breath thanks to quite a lot of dental disease. 🦷😷

A dental procedure for dogs actually involves very similar steps to a human dental — dental x-rays, checking every tooth thoroughly, extractions if needed, plus a full scale and polish. The big difference is that our furry patients need a general anaesthetic so we can do everything safely and properly.

Once we took Walter’s dental x-rays, we discovered several teeth with significant bone loss around them. Normally this would mean major surgery and multiple tooth extractions.

Luckily for Walter, we’ve recently updated some of our dental equipment and stock, including a product designed to be injected between the tooth and bone to help regenerate bone and potentially save the tooth. After a quick chat with Wally’s parents, they kindly agreed for him to become our little guinea pig. 🐶

The procedure ended up being much quicker, easier and less invasive than removing all those big fangs — and hopefully it means Walter gets to keep his beautiful smile for years to come. 🤞🦷

The star-nosed mole (Condylura cristata) is one of the fastest “smellers” on Earth! 🌟👃

This bizarre little creature can identify and decide whether to eat something in just 120 milliseconds — faster than the blink of an eye.
Its strange star-shaped nose isn’t just for looks either. The 22 tiny tentacles are packed with over 100,000 nerve fibres, making it one of the most sensitive touch organs in the animal kingdom.

Even crazier? It can smell underwater by blowing tiny air bubbles onto objects, then sniffing the bubbles back in again. 🤯

Nature is weird… and we absolutely love it. 💜

🐾 Pet of the Week 🐾

This morning it’s not so much Pet of the Week as much as a “Would Love to Be a Pet” 💜

Handsome Howie is still searching for his furever home.

He’s a sweet little soul who was found as a starving little feral kitten in Howmans Gap. After being fostered by our fabulous nurse , he’s transformed into quite the little cuddler. 🥹

Howie is vaccinated, wormed, microchipped and desexed — all ready to find his perfect family.

🐾 Case of the Week 🐾

Pretty Poppy came in to see us for chest x-rays, but during her scans we discovered something a little more unexpected… 😅

Cheeky Poppy had somehow managed to eat a staple! Little weirdo 💜

Luckily, the tiny metal hitchhiker was sitting safely and we recommended a rather unusual treatment plan — a tin of asparagus to help wrap around the staple and move it through her digestive tract. 🌱

And lo and behold… success! Poppy passed the staple easily the very next day 🤣

Dogs really do keep life interesting around here. 🥰

🧠 Monday Mindbender 🧠

A recently discovered pipefish found in the coral reefs of Papua New Guinea has been named after one of my all-time favourite Sesame Street characters — Snuffleupagus! 😍

With its long orange-brown hair-like filaments, the tiny fish bears a striking resemblance to the lovable shaggy character.

This adorable little critter is incredibly difficult to spot, blending perfectly into the coral and seaweed around it, which made it very hard for scientists to identify and study. 🌊

Despite its cute appearance, the Snuffleupagus pipefish is actually a skilled little hunter, feeding on tiny shrimp and plankton drifting through the reef. 🦐

🐾 Pet of the Week 🐾

Beautiful Mumma Ruby visited us earlier this week! ❤️

Ruby is the gorgeous mum of the little puppies we recently helped rear, and she came back in for her desexing surgery so there’ll be no more surprise litters in the future… much to her new mum’s relief 😅

She was absolutely thrilled to see us all again, showering the team with tail wags and cuddles — but we think she was even happier to head home at the end of the day! 😜

We’re so happy to see Ruby thriving in her new home and living her best life. 🐶💕

🧠 Monday Mindbender 🧠

Meet the pacu fish 🐟

The fish famous for having eerily human-looking teeth 😳

Unlike piranhas, pacu mainly eat nuts, seeds and fruit — and those strange square teeth are perfect for crushing them.

Still… seeing a fish with what looks like a full set of human teeth is definitely unsettling 😂
