Preparing Horses for Shows Without Creating Anxiety: helping horses to think clearly under pressure

In this episode, Jenny and I discuss how to prepare horses for shows, clinics and challenging environments without overwhelming them emotionally. We explore why exposure alone is not enough, and how horses need guidance, clarity and understanding to feel safe under pressure.

I explain the importance of teaching horses to become problem solvers rather than comfort seekers, and how better leading and connection can help horses cope with uncertainty, travel, busy environments and unexpected situations.

We also answer questions about clinic preparation, riding past mobs of goats, fixation and worry under saddle, plus issues like pinned ears, pigroots, girthiness and emotional brace.

Learn practical ways to help your horse stay softer, more adjustable and mentally connected in situations that would normally create anxiety or overwhelm.

Many years ago, I was in Germany where there was a herd of horses which had 2 very extreme cases of horses that couldn't cope with leaving other horses. I was allowed to help train one of these, the daughter. This is the story of the session I had with it and how I went about helping it to be able to be caught.

Hope it helps any of you working with horses that don't want to be caught.

It's important that we look into what is causing the anxiety - not just the anxiety itself. Things can get better.

THE KEY TO A GOOD CATCH IS TRUST. THE KEY TO TRUST? GOOD EDUCATION.

If your horse has got memories of feeling trapped in the halter, the halter can feel like you are putting hobbles on it. It doesn't want the hobbles on because now you're going to restrict it in some way.

So the association that the halter has, no matter how many times you put the halter on and off, still has to have the right education associated with it, so they've got a nice soft mindset about having that halter on.

If you look at a lot of techniques, people send their horse off pressure and then they catch them in the halter.

BUT, if you're using your halter in a way to guide your horse, so you can direct the horse out - so it thinks out and it goes out with that halter, then it comes back with that halter, then basically the halter becomes a pathway, not a trap.

If instead you send your horse out with an energy which kind of worries it a little bit and then to stop it from leaving, you have to hold onto the rope, the horse will never ever get over the idea that this halter's a trap.

👉How you direct and lead your horse is really the key.
🔵 Do more good quality leading
🔵 And really look at how your horse is searching in the halter

CATCHING TIP 🐴
Most horses aren’t hard to catch… they’re worried about what happens after you catch them.

Many horses that are difficult to catch aren’t trying to be naughty — they’re worried about the feeling that comes after the halter goes on.

In this episode, Mark explains how better leading, softer guidance and emotional clarity can completely change the way a horse feels about handling and catching.

Learn practical ways to build trust, willingness and understanding without force or chasing. 🐴

This is a picture of Stephany - my host in Florida - with her young dressage prospect and Michelle with her Rocky Mountain horse who she is aiming to have as an all round adjustable trail horse. Had a great time in Florida and just wanted to thank everyone who came to the 2 clinics - both of which ran full. Great to have you there and have a chance to help you all.

Sharing knowledge is important, but what matters most to me is improving the life of the horse. I appreciate having the opportunity to do just that.

Special thanks to Stephany and Chris for arranging the clinics and for looking after me so well too. Really appreciate it.

NEW PODCAST EPISODE 🐴

Managing Horses: Catching, Handling & Looking After Them

In this week’s podcast episode I answer online member questions about catching difficult horses, helping horses feel safer with halters, managing herd-bound behaviour, and reducing anxiety during everyday handling.

Jenny and I discuss practical exercises that help horses become softer, calmer and more understanding when being caught and led, while also exploring why many handling problems stem from emotional worry rather than disobedience.

I explain how improving the quality of leading and guidance can completely change the way a horse feels about the halter, handling and separation from other horses.

Traditional handling methods can often create brace and avoidance. In this episode you’ll learn practical ways to build trust, emotional clarity and willingness without force or chasing.

TRAINING TIP 🐴
I use leading as an essential foundation to not only avoiding problems (like rearing, pulling back, problem loading and even rein control). Leading also helps to fix many areas. How I lead - with feel - is different though from how most people lead.

Watch this video to find out what I mean when I say lead with feel and why it is so helpful for horses.
