Why I want every kitten owner to have a financial plan 🩷

I want every kitten owner to have some sort of financial plan for their cat. It doesn’t have to look exactly the same for everyone. Some owners will choose insurance. Some will choose a different provider. Some may prefer to put money aside. What matters to me is that they’ve actually thought about it before their cat needs help.

Because the reality is that veterinary care can become expensive very quickly. A broken leg, emergency surgery, specialist treatment, ongoing tests or a serious illness can turn into thousands of dollars before anyone has had a chance to take a proper breath. And when that happens, the owner is not only worried about their cat, they’re also trying to work out how to pay for treatment.

That is not a fun place to be. It’s not calm. It’s the kind of moment where preparation really matters. If an owner already has insurance or another plan, they are much more likely to focus on what their cat needs rather than making decisions purely around money.

This is why I talk about free take home insurance with owners. It’s not because I think insurance is magic. It’s because it gets them thinking. It helps them understand that responsible ownership includes planning for the unexpected, not just buying the cute bed and the nice bowls 🩷

If this gets you thinking about how you prepare your kitten owners and you’re an Australian cat breeder, I’ve put some more information in the comments for you.

The best time for cat breeders to talk about vet bills 🩷

The best time to talk about vet bills is before there is a vet bill. Once a cat is already unwell or injured, everyone is emotional. The owner is worried. The cat needs care. The costs may be growing quickly. That is not the ideal moment to start teaching someone about responsibility, insurance and planning ahead.

I think this conversation belongs at handover, while everyone is calm and excited and the kitten is starting their new life. It doesn’t need to be heavy. It can sit naturally beside the food, vaccination record, microchip details and settling in advice. You can simply explain that unexpected things can happen, and that you recommend the owner keeps insurance or has another plan for future veterinary costs.

Free take home insurance makes this so much easier because there is already something practical to point to. The owner is not just being told to think about vet bills one day. They’re being given a starting point, and then they can decide what they want to do after that.

I love this because it turns an awkward topic into normal owner education. We don’t need to avoid talking about money. Veterinary care costs money, and cats deserve owners who have thought about that before something goes wrong. It’s sensible, kind and very much part of sending kittens home well prepared ✨

If this gets you thinking about when you talk to owners about veterinary costs and you’re an Australian cat breeder, I’ve put some more information in the comments for you.

Sara asked what my top five life changing or time saving things are for a cattery, and some of my answers are probably not what new breeders expect.

Yes, the cute kitten things are fun. Blankets, toys, bowls, beds, all of that. But the things that really save you are usually the practical things you don’t think about until you need them.

My top five are waterproof mattress protectors for every bed, a really good enzyme urine cleaner, some kind of containment or separation set up, proper breeder support, and strong hard case cat carriers.

Not glamorous. Very useful. And yes, the mattress protector is number one for a reason.🛌🏼

If you’re a new breeder and you want help setting things up properly from the beginning, I’ve put more info about the New Cat Breeders Club in the comments.
