Dental disease is extremely common in pets and can cause:
* Bad breath
* Pain and discomfort
* Difficulty eating
* Gum disease
* Tooth loss
* Infection affecting the heart, liver and kidneys.

Many pets hide dental pain surprisingly well, so regular dental checks are very important.

If you notice any smelly breath, tartar build-up, drooling or changes in eating habits your pet may benefit from a dental assessment.

๐Ÿด๐Ÿ’ฉ Why Faecal Egg Counts Matter in Horses ๐Ÿ’ฉ๐Ÿด

Did you know that routinely drenching every horse on a schedule can actually contribute to drench resistance?
Parasites are becoming increasingly resistant to many commonly used worming products โ€” making effective parasite control more challenging for horse owners everywhere.

At Parkes Veterinary Hospital we use faecal egg count testing to help determine:
โœ”๏ธ Which horses actually need drenching
โœ”๏ธ How heavy the worm burden is
โœ”๏ธ Whether your current drench is working effectively
โœ”๏ธ How to slow the development of drench resistance

๐Ÿ”ฌ What is a Faecal Egg Count (FEC)?
A small manure sample is examined under the microscope to count parasite eggs present in the faeces. This helps identify โ€œhigh sheddersโ€ and allows for targeted parasite control instead of unnecessary blanket drenching.

๐Ÿ“‰ Why reducing unnecessary drenching is important:
โ€ข Helps preserve the effectiveness of current wormers
โ€ข Reduces resistance in parasite populations
โ€ข Saves money on unnecessary treatments
โ€ข Supports better long-term horse health

โš ๏ธ Horses with resistant worms may continue contaminating paddocks despite regular drenching.

๐ŸŽ Best practice parasite control includes:
โ€ข Regular faecal egg count testing
โ€ข Strategic drenching based on results
โ€ข Paddock hygiene and manure management
โ€ข Monitoring young horses more closely

Bring in a fresh manure sample and our team can help develop an evidence-based parasite management plan tailored to your horse or herd. We offer discount testing to multiple horses tested on the same day. We can also test other species too! ๐Ÿ• ๐Ÿˆ ๐Ÿ‘ ๐Ÿ ๐Ÿ„

The result of a recent FEC below shows a high count of strongles >500epg. This is a well conditioned young horse with a reasonable drench history ๐Ÿชฑ you don't know what you don't know!!
