🐴💩 Why Faecal Egg Counts Matter in Horses 💩🐴

Did you know that routinely drenching every horse on a schedule can actually contribute to drench resistance?
Parasites are becoming increasingly resistant to many commonly used worming products — making effective parasite control more challenging for horse owners everywhere.

At Parkes Veterinary Hospital we use faecal egg count testing to help determine:
✔️ Which horses actually need drenching
✔️ How heavy the worm burden is
✔️ Whether your current drench is working effectively
✔️ How to slow the development of drench resistance

🔬 What is a Faecal Egg Count (FEC)?
A small manure sample is examined under the microscope to count parasite eggs present in the faeces. This helps identify “high shedders” and allows for targeted parasite control instead of unnecessary blanket drenching.

📉 Why reducing unnecessary drenching is important:
• Helps preserve the effectiveness of current wormers
• Reduces resistance in parasite populations
• Saves money on unnecessary treatments
• Supports better long-term horse health
