Extra drops are often added with the intention of keeping the horse warmer, but in most circumstances can actually have the opposite effect.

Canvas that has become wet through (often after laying in mud or puddles) and is hanging below the elbow can create a cold pocket as the air moves through the damp material.

This strongly reduces the rug's effectiveness to keep the horse warm, as cold air is continuously blowing under their stomachs.

The extra length, if too long, can also get trapped under feet as the horse attempts to stand up or lay down. Resulting in unnecessary damages to the rug.

The extra drop is more suitable for particularly deep horses, rather than tall.
