🦢 AVIAN INFLUENZA (H5N1) UPDATE 🦆
H5N1 Avian Influenza has recently been detected in Western Australia and South Australia. While the risk to the general public and pets remains very low, this is a zoonotic disease, meaning it can spread between animals and people under certain circumstances. Staying informed and taking simple precautions can help protect wildlife, pets and our community. 💙
Our clinic is still accepting wildlife presentations, with every case individually assessed to ensure safe treatment while maintaining strict biosecurity protocols.
👀 Watch for signs such as breathing difficulties, eye or nasal discharge, vomiting or regurgitation, pinhead bruising, neurological signs, severe weakness, or multiple sick or dead birds in one area.
🐶🐱 Protect your pets by keeping them away from sick or dead birds, avoiding contact with bird droppings and feathers, and wearing gloves and a mask if handling wildlife is unavoidable.
📞 If you find a sick or dead wild bird, avoid handling it where possible and report it to the Emergency Animal Disease Hotline: 1800 675 888.
