Dental disease isn't just a dog and cat issue β€” rabbits and guinea pigs actually have some of the most complex dental needs of any pet.

Here's what makes them unique:
🦷 Their teeth never stop growing. Rabbits and guinea pigs have teeth that grow continuously throughout their lives. If wear is uneven β€” often due to diet β€” teeth can become overgrown, develop sharp spurs, or cut into the tongue and cheeks.
πŸ₯— Diet is everything. Hay should make up the bulk of their diet (80%+) because the long-stemmed fibre keeps their teeth worn down correctly. Pellets and treats can't do the same job.
πŸ” Problems are hard to spot. Most dental issues in small animals occur at the back teeth, which can only be examined under sedation β€” so routine vet checks are especially important.
πŸ‘€ Signs to watch for: drooling, dropping food, weight loss, reduced appetite, wet chin fur.

If it's been a while since your rabbit or guinea pig had a check-up, August is a great time to book in. 🐾

Oh no! Snakes are out already!
Plus we were alerted to a dog suffering from tick paralysis yesterday. Some people choose not to use tick protection on their pets during the cooler months but our experience is that we see affected by paralysis ticks all year round

Your pet won't tell you their mouth hurts β€” but their body will.

Here are 6 signs of dental disease to watch for:

Bad breath β€” A little odour is normal; a strong, persistent smell isn't
Yellow or brown buildup on teeth β€” That's tartar, and it harbours bacteria
Red or swollen gums β€” Healthy gums are a pale pink, not inflamed
Dropping food or chewing on one side β€” Often a sign of mouth pain
Pawing at the mouth or face β€” Pets don't complain; they compensate
Drooling more than usual β€” Especially if new or alongside other signs

If any of these sound familiar, it's worth booking a dental check.

This 4 year old steer is lucky in more ways than one!
Firstly he is living out his life with his 3 brothers on a farm as pets. Today he was also seen for what might have been a painful abscess causing a lump on the right side of his face. Turns out it was not a surgical fix but simply the need to remove a hard rubber ball that had got stuck between his molars and his cheek!
5th year veterinary student Maya was delighted to be involved in diagnosing the issue and removing the offending foreign body!

The loyalty of a dog can be quite amazing!
Romeo was adopted just 4 months ago after spending 2 years in a shelter. Yesterday his new Mum was chainsawing when Romeo jumped in the way, trying to protect her from the noisy beast!
Luckily the wound missed his eye and was able to be neatly sutured by Dr Georgia and Romeo returned home that afternoon .

Stop rushing your dog past every interesting smell. That sniff IS the walk.

Did you know a dog's sense of smell is up to 100,000 times more powerful than ours? When your dog stops to sniff a patch of grass, they're reading an entire story β€” who was here, when, what they ate, how they were feeling.

Sniff walks (also called decompression walks) are:

More mentally tiring than a regular brisk walk
Excellent for anxious or reactive dogs
A brilliant way to let your dog just BE a dog

All it takes is just one infected mosquito to bite your pet and potentially cause fatal damage to your dog’s heart if they’re not on a heartworm prevention.
Is your dogs heartworm up to date?

Today was a tough day for Mary, the Saanen goat.

She safely delivered her first kid, but her twin was unable to be born naturally. After administering an epidural, Dr Joan was able to reposition the second baby and assist with the delivery.

Sadly, the second kid didn’t survive, but the important thing is that Mary made it through safely and is now back home, caring for this beautiful little cutie. πŸ’•πŸ
