Goannas, also known as Monitor Lizards, are fascinating and often formidable reptiles native to Australia. While generally shy and inclined to avoid confrontation, their size and natural defenses can pose a serious threat to domestic dogs, particularly those exploring rural or bush environments. Encounters can result in severe injuries to dogs, often requiring urgent veterinary attention.

While they don't have the venom associated with snakes, their saliva contains a cocktail of bacteria and mild toxins that can complicate bite wounds. The sheer power of a large goanna's jaw can cause deep lacerations and puncture wounds, potentially leading to significant tissue damage, bone fractures, and serious infections.

One of the most significant dangers from a goanna bite or scratch is the high risk of infection. The bacteria present in the goanna's mouth and on their claws, combined with the depth of puncture wounds, means that even seemingly minor injuries can rapidly develop into life-threatening infections, including cellulitis or septicaemia.

Dr Africa performed surgery on this patient and it healed beautifully. If your dog has a negative interatcion with a goanna please get them medical attention as soon as possible.

CANE TOAD WARNING - Warm, wet weather means more cane toads - Here's how to protect your pets:

PREVENTION:
🐸 Dogs, especially prey-driven, are most likely to go after Cane Toads, but they can also affect cats.
🐸 Cane toads are most active at night, especially during warm and wet months.
🐸 Train your pets to avoid toads (and snakes) - Contact your dog trainer for tips.
🐸 Learn to identify Cane Toads - Stout build, dry, bumpy skin and a 'frowny' ridge over each eye meeting in the middle, with large poison glands on their shoulders, and unwebbed front feet.
🐸Dispose of dead/dried Cane Toads found on your property - They can remain toxic for weeks, even dead.
🐸 Remove Cane Toad eggs - Inspect water sources on your property and remove their eggs (long, tangled black beads in clear jelly, in a double row).
🐸 Remove Cane Toads - Please don't hurt them; it's not their fault they're here. If you wish to to dispose of them legally, the most humane way is the cool-and-freeze method, once you've confirmed it's not a native frog.

TOXICITY SYMPTOMS:

🩺 Drool / Froth
🩺 Red, slimey gums
🩺Pawing at mouth
🩺Blank expression / Disorientation
🩺 Vomit
🩺 Uncoordination / Staggering
🩺 Shivering / Muscle Tremors / Convulsions / Seizures
🩺Rapid or Irregular Heartrate / Cardiac Arrest
🩺 Death

MILD SYMPTOMS:

1 - If your pet shows few to mild symptoms - Wipe their mouth as described below, and contact your Vet as soon as possible, as symptoms can quickly appear or escalate.

2 - If your pet is unconscious or seizuring - Do do not attempt to wipe their mouth, go to the Vet's immediately, calling on the way if safe to do so.

MOUTH WIPING
🏥Gently but thoroughly wipe your pet's mouth, gums, tongue, teeth and palate using a damp cloth for 10 - 15 minutes
🏥 Rinse the cloth well between wipes to avoid re-spreading toxins
🏥 Don't use a hose - this can cause inhalation pneumonia
🏥 After this time, transport your dog to the Vet's for assessment or treatment - if you have a passenger, they should continue to wipe out your pet's mouth in transit as above.

Help us name these little nuggets! ✨

These kittens were found under a tree on a very hot day, with no Mother in sight - we are still hoping she'll be found, but until then, we're taking care of them so they can grow up big, strong and healthy. They're very sweet, very small, and still need round-the-clock care. They've been given a flea bath (they're too small for flea and tick treatments) and they need to be syringe fed every few hours, then cleaned nicely as they do make a mess! We also make sure they're given snuggles by all the nurses and doctors to keep them warm and socialise them - that's the hardest part of course.

The smallest one is a girl and the bigger one is a boy; what should we name them until they find their Forever Names?

Ollie's gone from lanky, adorable puppy to big strong beautiful boy! 💪

We're so lucky to be a part of our patients' lives from cute little butterballs, to gorgeous grown adults. And just like us, their needs change as they grow!

Here’s what to expect from those first puppy visits through to their senior years — and how it compares to us humans 👇

🐶 Puppy (0–12 months = newborn to teenager)
💉 1st vaccine and health check (6–8 weeks) – Protects against Parvovirus, Distemper, and Hepatitis.
💉 2nd vaccine and health check (10–12 weeks) – Strengthens immunity and may include Parainfluenza and Bordatella.
💉 3rd vaccine and health check (14–16 weeks) – Final booster to complete their primary protection.

🩺 Desexing (6-18 months) – This is dependent on breed, size, lifestyle and health conditions, but most often happens around this age.

We’ll also chat about microchipping, desexing, nutrition, parasite prevention, insurance and puppy training to set your pup up for life.

🦴 Adult (1–7 years = 18–50 human years)
An annual health check keeps vaccinations up to date and ensures your dog stays in top shape. We’ll check teeth, weight, joints, skin, and overall wellbeing — prevention is the key to a long, healthy life.

💛 Senior (7+ years = 55+ human years)
As dogs age, we recommend health checks every 6 months. These visits often include blood and urine testing to monitor organ health, mobility assessments, and comfort management — helping your golden oldie enjoy their golden years.

Of course, we also welcome pets to drop in any time for a complimentary treat and a cuddle when you're in the neighbourhood - this is an easy way for your pet to create a positive association and make every visit less stressful for you and for your pup! 🍪

Serafina came in with a bow matching our scale blankie, with her best puppy face ready to request a treat! Can you guess her breed?🎀

Hint 1: At just 4 months old, this gentle giant already weighs over 22kg! ⚖️

Hint 2: This breed is a cross of several breeds (Giant Schnauzer, Rottweiler, Airedale Terrier, Newfoundland and more), making them versatile, strong, intelligent and loyal. 💪

Hint 3: They are incredibly soft and sweet, and this is very dangerous because you can get stuck patting them for hours and hours and hours. 😅

Our fluffy BFFS share their Howl-o-Ween Safety tips with us! 🎃

🌽Keep candy out of pet's reach: chocolate, sugar-free sweets (xylotol) and wrappers can all mean an emergency Vet visit
🌙Give them a safe and quiet space to relax in, especially if they are nervous around new people.
📞 Make sure they have their collars on, ID tags, and their microchips are up to date! So many pets are lost on Halloween, when doors open and close, all it takes is one second for them to slip out!

Have fun if you celebrate, and stay safe!

Before & After of Pudding graduating from the Cone Academy 🎓

This happy busy boy was all too happy to be given the green light to remove his 'lampshade' after his lid lesion healed up nicely! 💪

While Elizabethan Collars can be unfamiliar to your pet, we're so grateful for owners who dilligently keep them on, even in the face of the sookiest puppy eyes - keeping the cone on is often the difference between a beautifully healed surgery site or injury, and aggravating an issue resulting in extra trips to the Vets.

To make sure your pet has the best go at tolerating their collar, Pudding shares a few tips:
💙 If you can, practice wearing a cone at home for short periods of time when your pet doesn't have an injury (they're a great thing to have in your first aid kit!)
💙 Give high-value treats when your pet is wearing their collar for positive reinforcement (Pudding strongly endorses this strategy)
💙 Offer your pet raised water and food bowls while they are wearing their collar - this can be as easy as putting an upside-down bowl under your pet's current dish, so long as it fits under their collar
💙 Give extra scritches under their collar throughout the day to help ease any itchiness
💙 If you must take the cone off, do it when you can supervise your pet 100% - all it takes it one tempting scratch to ruin all that hard work
💙 Opt for a padded cone, like the one Pudding has - your shins will thank you! 😅

We see a lot of loveable, fluffy pets come through our doors — and sometimes, under all that fluff, we find hidden matts. 🪮

Most of the matted coats we see aren’t from poor care — they belong to cherished pets, who live a full and happy life, and whose families simply don't know how quickly matts can form or how uncomfortable they can be.

Matts often hide under the top layer of fur and pull tightly on your pet’s skin — imagine wearing a too-tight ponytail all day, every day. Ouch!

💈Which pets are most prone?
• Long, thick, or wooly coats (like Poodles, Doodles, or Collies)
• Long-haired cats, especially older ones who can’t groom as easily

💈How do matts happen?
• Areas where fur rubs — behind ears, around collars, under legs and bellies
• When fur gets wet and dries without brushing

💈Why do they matter?
They hurt! Matts pull on the skin, trap dirt and moisture, and can hide parasites.
In fact, shaving your pet can uncover hidden, open sores caused by dirt and moisture rubbing on your pet's fur ('hotspots') which can cause painful infections and require medical care.

💈What can you do?
Matts can be close to the skin and cutting them with scissors can result in you cutting their skin, and even needing stitches. Even passing a clipper blade between the matts and skin is a slow and delicate process.
The kindest option is often a short shave with a professional - it might not be the look you had in mind, but comfort always comes first. The good news? Once that heavy coat is gone, pets usually feel instantly lighter, happier, and bouncier!

With regular brushing and a consistent 6–8 week grooming schedule, we can help keep your pet’s coat healthy, comfy, and picture-perfect. 💛

17/10/2025

This is an engorged paralysis tick we found on a patient this week - thankfully, after treatment and a lot of care from her family, this little tough cookie pulled through and is recovering at home.

Please be careful and be aware wet weather, followed by sunny weather, means more ticks are out.

Flea and Tick preventatives are still the most effective way we have to prevent these from latching onto your pet and causing paralysis, which can be deadly. While we're all for natural support for your pet, please know that there are no fully natural preventatives that are currently efficient in killing these.

Set repeat reminders in your phone and if you can, set them a week before they're due to give you plenty of time to make sure you have your preventatives ready to go when they're due.

It is also good to avoid tall grasses, do regular tick checks on your pets. If you live in bush, you can groom your pet with a short clip to help make sure you catch these guys.

Tick twisters are the best way to remove ticks (tweezers risk leaving the mouthparts embedded in the skin).

If your pet is showing any signs of tick paralysis, please do not wait to see if it gets better - the longer you wait, the more intensive, difficult and expensive treatment will be. Life support and monitoring for an aggravated tick patient is round the clock, and they require weeks of strict rest afterwards to recover.

Cats will generally decline more quickly than dogs. Time is of the essence.

Tick paralysis signs are:
- Affected breathing
- Meow or bark sounds different
- Wobbly walking (back legs often collapse first)
- Lethargy
- Vomiting or regurgitating

It pains us to post these because many in our community have lost beloved pets due to paralysis ticks - even those who are so attentive, caring and on top of their pet's health.

It really only takes one lapsed week of preventatives, and one tick, for your pet to suffer from tick paralysis.

We continue to post these reminders because we truly believe that prevention is 99% of the solution to this devastating situation. Please check that your pets' preventatives are up to date, especially before going into the weekend!
